Elara's POV
The square was packed.
I had never seen so many people in one place. They lined the streets. They filled the windows. They stood on rooftops, craning their necks to see. The guards had formed a path from the palace gates to the center of the square, where a wooden platform had been built.
On the platform, kneeling in a row, were the lords. Ashford. Mercer. The others. Their hands were bound. Their faces were pale. They looked like men who had finally understood that their money and their titles could not save them.
Malakor was there too. He was not kneeling with the others. He was standing to the side, under guard, his hands bound behind his back. His face was still. His eyes were cold. He was watching me.
I walked to the center of the platform. The crowd went quiet.
