Chapter 47 - (final)Chapter 47 – What Still Burns

The silence lingered after Jane's tears finally slowed.

Levi watched her carefully, golden eyes softer than they had ever been in battle. Jane looked exhausted—dark circles under her eyes, shoulders tight as if she had forgotten how to rest.

Levi shifted slightly, wincing. "Jane…"

Jane immediately straightened. "You shouldn't move. You're still hurt."

Levi gave a faint smile. "You're avoiding the question I haven't asked yet."

Jane froze.

Levi's gaze sharpened—not accusing, just worried. "Your blood," she said quietly. "The dragon blood. How is it treating you?"

Jane looked away.

"It's… unstable," she admitted. "Some days I feel normal. Other days it feels like something is crawling under my skin, waiting." Her fingers curled unconsciously, the metal hand faintly humming. "I'm scared that one day I won't be able to stop it."

Levi's chest tightened.

"You saved my life," Levi said. "You ended Shax."

Jane shook her head quickly. "I didn't do it to be a hero. I did it because I couldn't lose you." Her voice cracked. "But what if that power takes everything else from me?"

Levi reached out slowly, giving Jane time to pull away.

Jane didn't.

Levi's bandaged hand gently cupped Jane's cheek. "Listen to me, little witch," she said softly. "Power does not define what you are. Choice does."

Jane's eyes shimmered. "And what if my choices still hurt people?"

Levi leaned closer, foreheads nearly touching. "Then you will not face that fear alone. Not anymore."

Jane swallowed. "You promise?"

Levi nodded. "I failed my kingdom because I stood alone. I won't repeat that mistake."

Jane let out a shaky breath, her hands gripping the edge of the bed. "When I thought you were dying…" she whispered. "I realized something. I don't just care about you. I—"

She stopped, afraid of the word.

Levi closed the distance.

Their kiss was gentle—hesitant at first, as if both were afraid the moment might shatter. Jane's lips trembled; Levi's touch was warm and grounding. No rush. No urgency. Just relief.

When they pulled back, Jane laughed softly through tears.

"That was… overdue."

Levi smiled faintly. "By about eighteen hundred years."

Jane rested her forehead against Levi's. "Stay with me," she whispered.

Levi's wings shifted slightly beneath the bandages as she answered without hesitation.

"Always."

Outside the window, the city lights glowed quietly—unaware that something fragile and powerful had just taken root.

Not a war.

Not a prophecy.

But a choice.
