Chapter 1 - Hand of the Gods

I turned round and found out that things were getting out of hands. I never signed up for any of this and there was no one to blame. Not entirely, there was someone to blame but they weren't physically present so there was no one to take my anger on. I knew it would be absurd to blame someone whom I was told could hear me but I couldn't see them. My world had gotten a mysterious turn and there was nothing I could do about it. It all began about six months ago. It was an intense night. There was nothing about it that I could forget even if I tried to. I stood in the bar and stared at my glass of whiskey. The dark brown liquid looked bitter. I would have succumbed to its look if I had no experience of its taste. I turned round and the party was still going on. I felt out of place even though it was my own party. The promotion had come earlier than I had expected but it was no surprise. Everything was too easy. There was no sense of danger, adventure or excitement. Everything was too easy. School, college and work; I always came out on top. There was nothing new. I faced them and everything was the same. They seemed happy but not me. I hadn't noticed anything out of place but I was reluctant to turn before I saw her. I looked towards the door and my eyes never turned away from her. Her crimson lips matched her dress and her grip on her purse was soft. She moved freely in her shoes and her smile matched her eyes. Her smile broadened when our eyes met and there, I knew that was my sense of adventure. I knew she was not going to succumb to my charms easily and that was simply a satisfying thought. I couldn't help but smile. I walked to her and sat on the stool next to her. She ignored me and that weirdly lifted my spirit. I was glad nothing was coming to me easily.

She ordered a glass of vodka and gulped it all at once. I was surprisingly elated by her constant rejection even though we hadn't spoken yet but my joy was short lived. She finally turned to me. My heart sublimed and there was no controlling it. I watched her swirl her drink in the glass slowly. I knew she had noticed my silent efforts.

"How long do you want to stare?" she whispered to me. Her voice was calm and soothing.

"It depends on how long your beauty lasts" I responded in a calm tone.

She smiled and turned towards the counter.

"That would be forever and I don't have that time" she turned to her drink and took a sip.

I could feel the sensation from her sheer confidence and I knew it was something I wanted. Something I had longed for.

"I guess we could leave" I suggested hoping she would take the bait.

She seemed lost in thoughts for a while before she replied.

"I'm no psychic but I can swear you're using me to get out of your boredom" she smiled and I knew she was catching on.

I needed nothing more to convince me that she was a smart one. I didn't know what more to say to convince her to leave with me. Although I wanted to leave there badly, I also wanted to know her more. I had learned that there was nothing special about her but her mere self confidence intrigued me. I remained silent for a while as I watched her gulp down her last shot of whiskey. She grabbed her purse with her left hand and held my arm with her right. She pulled me with her to the exit. I knew I would have too much to drink so I didn't bring my car. It was like fate was once again working in my favor. We stood outside for a few moments and the valet pulled up in front of us with a black Audi. It almost looked custom made.

She took the keys and turned to me, "Are you coming?"

I nearly ran to the other side but the gentleman in me wouldn't let me appear desperate. She sped off immediately I closed the door and I began questioning myself whether it was a bad idea. I wanted to calculate what would happen in all the scenarios where I imagined she was drunk but the idea of being unsure of what would happen for once sent sweet chills down my spine. My head began to spin in a short moment. My whole body felt heavy and my thoughts were louder than usual. I realized instantly that I was in one of those situations I have constantly been seeing in the movies. I turned to her and she was smiling. That little gesture reassured me that I was not in any grave danger. I laid back and before I realized I had passed out.
