Chapter 41 — Awakening of the Crown
The Storm After Kevin
The world was still trembling.
Even though Kevin had vanished into the storm above, the clearing still crackled with the aftershock of his power. The ground was torn open in long jagged scars, trees lay uprooted, and the smell of ozone burned the air.
Kai exhaled slowly, chest rising and falling as he steadied himself. His body still shook from the intensity of the fight. Beside him, Lyra brushed dust from her cheek, her silver eyes flickering with light that hadn't been there before.
The Hollow Queen was gone—fled into the deeper shadows of the forest—but her hatred clung to the air like poison.
Kai glanced at Lyra. "Are you okay?"
Lyra nodded, though her breath hitched slightly. "I'm fine… I think."
Kai placed a hand gently on her waist, pulling her close for just a moment. "You scared me back there."
Lyra leaned into him briefly, her voice soft. "You scared me too… but we made it."
Their foreheads touched—warm, grounding, intimate—but only for a heartbeat before the forest rumbled around them again.

A low hum began to rise from the center of the clearing.
Kai and Lyra stepped into defensive stances as the silver light of the Crown of Two shimmered into existence above the broken stone altar. Its glow was brighter than before—steady, pulsing, alive.
Lyra's breath caught. "It's reacting to us."
Kai felt the same pulse in his chest—like his heartbeat was syncing with the relic. "It knows we fought together."
Lyra lifted her hand toward the Crown. The moment her fingers neared it, the light intensified and spiraled outward, forming glowing rings that circled both her and Kai. Their shadows stretched long across the ground, merging and splitting like living shapes.

Kai reached out without thinking, taking Lyra's hand in his. Their fingers intertwined naturally, effortlessly—as if the Crown itself pulled them closer.
Lyra's voice trembled. "Do you feel that?"
Kai nodded. "It's… warm."

A tear ripped open in the air like a gash in reality. Dark energy spilled out, spiraling like a storm of black fire.
From the rift stepped the Hollow Queen, her armor cracked but her rage brighter than ever. Shadows clung to her form like armor made of living nightmares.

Kai's grip tightened on Lyra's hand. "We're not afraid of you."

Kai and Lyra leaped in opposite directions, breaking the charge. Kai summoned dark-fire blades, cutting through tendrils as fast as they appeared. Each strike sent shockwaves through the forest, splitting ground and exploding debris.
Lyra raised her hands, her new radiant energy crackling through her veins. She thrust her palms forward—sending out a burst of silver-white force that lit the entire battlefield. The energy tore through the shadows, clearing a path straight toward the Queen.
The Queen snarled, her armor shifting like living smoke. She vanished in an instant and reappeared beside Lyra, claws outstretched.
Kai's heart stopped—
"LYRA!"
He vanished in a burst of flame, reappearing between them. He caught the Queen's clawed strike with crossed blades, sparks erupting as her talons screeched across the dark-metal surface.
Lyra slid to the side, catching her breath. "Thank you…"
Kai didn't look back, but his voice was sharp. "I'll always protect you."
The Queen hissed. "Sickening."
She blasted them both backward with a burst of shadow energy. They skidded across the ground but recovered quickly.

The Crown glowed brighter—blinding.
Both Kai and Lyra felt the pull.

"You can't win," Kai said.
"Not against both of us," Lyra added.
The Queen snarled. "I won't be defeated by a child… and a traitor's daughter!"

The blast struck Kai dead-on.
It sent him flying across the clearing, slamming into the broken earth with a force that cracked the ground.
"KAI!"
Lyra raced to him, skidding to her knees beside his motionless form. His breaths were shallow. The blast had cut deep—through armor, through magic, almost through him.
Lyra's hands trembled as she lifted his head. "No… no, no, no…"
His eyes fluttered open.
"Lyra…" he whispered.
Tears slipped down her cheeks. "Stay with me. Please."
He managed a weak smile. "I'm not going anywhere."
She wrapped her arms around him, holding him tightly even as the Queen approached. Their closeness steadied his breath, his heartbeat syncing with hers.
The Crown pulsed again.

Kai rose slowly, leaning on Lyra for support.

A sudden burst of silver light washed over them.
The Crown of Two descended slowly, its glow brighter than ever. It hovered between them, humming with energy connected to both of their souls.
Kai looked at Lyra.
Lyra looked at Kai.
They reached out—together.
Their fingertips touched the Crown at the same time.
And the world exploded in light.
