[Active Task 1: Inquire about the color of Layra's undergarments (Reward: 1 Incubus Point)]

[Active Task 2: Express gratitude to Professor Alexa for today's lecture after class (Reward: 1 Incubus Point)]

James stared at the glowing blue panel, pulse thundering in his ears. Time abruptly resumed around him.

Professor Alexa stood frozen mid-stroke at the whiteboard, chalk hovering an inch from the surface. Layra's lips were parted behind him, her whisper caught halfway: "Hey, focus on the "

Everything was motionless. Silent.

Holy shit. I can really stop time.

The realization hit him like a second truck. He whipped his head around, crimson eyes wide behind fogged glasses.

The classroom was a perfect statue gallery: students mid-laugh, a guy frozen reaching for his bag, sunlight suspended in golden shafts.

Then his gaze snapped back to the tasks.

Ask Layra what color panties she's wearing? Are you kidding me? That's impossible.

Task 2, though… that one looked almost normal.

Time lurched forward without warning. The chalk tapped the board with a soft clack. Layra's warm breath grazed his ear.

"Hey, focus on the class, okay? I'm not doing your assignments for you this time." She kicked her legs idly under the desk, emerald eyes narrowed in playful mockery, a smirk tugging at her full lips.

James barely heard her. The exact same words. The exact same moment. He was truly back.

The rest of the lecture passed in a haze. When the bell finally rang, students flooded the aisles like a dam breaking. James stayed seated, knuckles white around his pen.

Layra lingered at the door, hands on hips. "Hey, loser, why aren't you coming? Don't tell me you're planning on living in this classroom now."

"I… have something to do," James said, rising slowly. He glanced out the window toward the distant campus gate, the traffic light blinking red. "Go ahead. And uh look both ways at the gate before crossing, okay? The light sticks sometimes."

Layra blinked, caught off guard. Her brows knitted in confusion, cheeks puffing slightly in that cute way she did when annoyed. "Okay, okay, I'm not a kid.

Geez, what's with you today?" She muttered "weirdo" under her breath, but her tone lacked its usual bite.

With a dramatic roll of her eyes, she turned and left, dark hair swishing, hips swaying in that effortless rhythm that always made James's throat tight.

She'll be safe this time, he thought, chest loosening a fraction.

He waited until the room emptied, then slipped out and headed straight for the faculty wing.

Professor Alexa's office door was ajar. James knocked lightly. "Professor? May I come in?"

"Come in," she called, voice soft, distracted.

He stepped inside. The small office smelled of vanilla and fresh coffee. Books lined every wall; afternoon light slanted through half-closed blinds, painting golden stripes across her desk.

Alexa sat with perfect posture, pen dancing across a planner, long hair spilling over one shoulder like silk.

She glanced up, mild surprise softening her sharp features. "James? Everything all right?"

His mouth went desert-dry. Hands clammy, he approached until he stood a safe three feet away close enough for her perfume to wrap around him, far enough to keep his sanity.

"Uh… Professor Alexa?" His voice cracked embarrassingly.

She set the pen down, leaning lightly against the desk. Arms crossed loosely beneath her chest, the motion drew the sleek fabric of her top tighter for a heartbeat. A patient smile curved her lips. "Yes?"

"I just wanted to say… thank you. For today's lecture. You explain everything really clearly. It helps. A lot."

The words tumbled out awkward and rehearsed, but they were true.

Alexa's eyes widened a fraction. A genuine smile bloomed slow, warm, nothing like the polite ones she gave the class. Faint color rose in her cheeks. What's with this student suddenly thanking me? she thought.

She was used to stares that lingered too long on her body, on curves that tight jeans and fitted tops couldn't hide.

In three months of teaching, no one had ever come just to say thank you. Not without wanting something in return.

"That's very kind of you, James," she said softly, voice lighter than usual. "I appreciate it more than you know. Most people only visit when they need extensions."

She laughed a quiet, melodic sound that made the room feel smaller, warmer. On impulse, she reached out and gave his forearm a brief, encouraging squeeze. Her fingers were warm, gentle. "Keep up the good work, okay?"

James's brain short-circuited. Heat exploded across his face.

In panic, he instinctively triggered Time Stop.

The world froze again. Alexa's hand lingered on his arm mid-retreat, her smile suspended in that rare, sincere curve. Dust motes hung motionless in the sunbeams.

The panel flashed.

[System Notification: Task 2 Completed]

[System Notification: Reward Granted +1 Incubus Point]

[System Notification: Current Incubus Points: 1]

James exhaled shakily. It's real. All of it.

He pulled up his status.

Host: James Nolen

Incubus Points: 1

Skill: Time Stop

Physique: 3

Strength: 4

Agility: 5

Stamina: 3

Can I raise these stats?

[System Response: Affirmative. Incubus Points may be allocated to increase attributes. Average adult human baseline: 4 across all categories.]

James grimaced. So my physique and stamina are actually below average. Fantastic.

The single point hummed in his veins like faint electricity, tempting him to spend it immediately. But he resisted. Save it. I might need it.

[System Notification: Task 2 completion detected. Updating task list.]

[Task 1: Inquire about the color of Layra's undergarments (Reward: 1 Incubus Point)]

[Task 2: Initiate romantic or physical advances toward Layra (Reward: 1 Incubus Point)]

[Task 3: Request private tutoring sessions from Professor Alexa (Reward: 1 Incubus Point)]

James's stomach dropped.

Make advances on Layra? Are you insane? She'd murder me. She doesn't even see me that way.

His gaze lingered on Task 3. Asking for extra classes… that was almost normal. Too normal. Suspiciously easy, just like the thank-you had been.

He released Time Stop.

Sound rushed back. Alexa's hand dropped away; the faint blush still dusted her cheeks as she glanced down at her papers, suddenly self-conscious.

"You can go now, James," she said gently, voice a touch softer than before.

"Y-yes, Professor. Thank you again." He backed out quickly, nearly tripping over the threshold, and fled down the hall.

Outside, the late afternoon sun bathed the campus paths in orange light. Students streamed toward the gates.

Somewhere ahead, Layra was safely across the street by now because he had changed things.

James leaned against a wall, heart racing, the new tasks burning behind his eyes.

Task 3 felt achievable. Safe, even.

But a quiet, suspicious voice whispered in the back of his mind:

Why is the system making it so easy to get closer to the professor?

And deep down, beneath the fear and disbelief, a tiny spark of anticipation flickered to life.
