The stone corridor was gone. The smell of cooking fires was gone.
I was standing in the middle of an endless, rolling ocean.
The sky was a blinding, open blue, and the heat of the sun beat down on me instantly. The sound of waves surrounded me, a vast, swallowing loneliness that stretched to the horizon in every direction.
Talk about scary stuff. What am I going to see? Mermaids?
I planted my feet on the surface of the water—which felt solid, like glass—and crossed my arms.
Bring it on! I'm ready!
Suddenly, the rhythmic weaving of the ocean waves was disrupted.
Something was coming up from the depths. A massive shadow began to darken the turquoise water beneath me, growing larger and larger.
Ah, here it comes. Must be a group of mermaids.
But as the shadow breached the surface, I realized I was wrong. Dead wrong.
It wasn't a group of small shadows. It was one shadow. And it was titanic.
BOOOOM.
The ocean exploded upwards.
