"I don't really miss things anymore."
The words didn't fall.
They stayed.
They hung in the air between Kai and the people who loved him like something fragile no one knew how to touch.
Sora's breath caught.
Joro's fists tightened.
Mira looked away.
Rin felt the psychic field shudder.
Mizuki pressed a hand to her chest.
Eloine's calm cracked just a little.
Kai didn't notice.
He turned and walked away.
Down the hallway.
Past lockers.
Past voices.
Past everything that still cared.
Behind him, life continued.
But something had ended.
That night, no one slept.
Sora lay on her bed whispering Kai's name.
Mira stared at a blank page.
Rin paced her room, sensing something wrong in the world.
Mizuki curled up with a quiet ache.
Eloine sat outside Kai's door listening to his breathing.
And Ayko…
Ayko sat on a rusted swing in the abandoned park.
The chains creaked softly.
The broken slide reflected moonlight.
This was where Kai had first smiled.
She waited.
At 2:17 a.m., Joro's phone buzzed.
Not in the group chat.
Individually.
"Come to school early. Before classes. Empty classroom near the stairs. We need to talk about Kai."
No emojis.
No jokes.
Morning came quietly.
The classroom was dark when they arrived.
Sora.
Mira.
Rin.
Mizuki.
Eloine.
Joro closed the door.
"He's disappearing," Sora whispered.
"He's fading," Rin said.
"We can't just watch," Mira said.
"We shouldn't force him," Eloine replied.
Mizuki spoke softly.
"Give him a choice."
"Letters," Joro said.
"Each one tells him where to find us."
"So he chooses?" Mira asked.
"No. So his heart chooses."
Ayko wasn't there.
She wouldn't write one.
That morning Kai noticed the house was empty.
Sora wasn't in the kitchen.
Eloine wasn't in the hallway.
No voices.
No warmth.
He didn't feel worried.
That scared him.
He walked to school alone.
In class he didn't talk.
No one talked to him.
At his locker…
Four envelopes waited.
Mira.
Rin.
Mizuki.
Eloine.
No Ayko.
His chest tightened.
He held them in his hands while the hallway moved around him.
And somewhere far away…
Ayko waited....
Kai didn't move for a long time.
The locker door was still open, metal cold against his fingers. The four envelopes rested in his hands like something fragile and dangerous at the same time.
People passed him in the hallway, pretending not to look. He could feel their eyes anyway — not on his face, but on the choice he was holding.
Mira walked by without meeting his gaze.
Rin kept her eyes forward.
Mizuki slowed for a heartbeat, then turned away.
Eloine didn't come near him at all.
They all knew.
He closed the locker gently and walked to the empty stairwell. The steps were cold as he sat down, back against the wall, the envelopes resting on his knees.
He opened the first one.
Mira's letter
"Kai,
You used to look at people like you were afraid they'd disappear if you blinked. Now you look like you're already gone.
I don't know what's happening to you, but I don't want to lose you like this. If there's still a part of you that feels, come to the art room after school. I'll be there."
Kai folded the paper slowly.
A quiet ache stirred in his chest.
Not enough.
Rin's letter
"You are standing at the edge of something irreversible. Not death — loss. If you want the truth about what's happening to you, meet me on the rooftop."
Mizuki's letter
"I don't know why I feel you, but I do. Even when you don't feel anything. I'll be by the old music room."
Eloine's letter
"You don't have to choose me. Just don't disappear. I'll be in the garden behind the gym."
Four places.
Four hearts.
One name missing.
Ayko.
The bell rang.
The day moved on.
Kai didn't speak.
No one spoke to him.
After school…
The art room smelled of paint and dust. Mira stood by the window.
"You came."
"I read your letter."
"Then… you still feel something?"
"I don't think I feel the way I used to."
"So that's it?"
"I didn't want to disappear without telling you."
"I don't want to be someone you lose yourself for."
"That's why I came."
Tears fell.
"Thank you for not leaving me in the dark."
Rooftop…
"You're still walking."
"I am."
"You know what you're losing."
"Yes."
"And you're okay with that?"
"I don't know. But I can't stop."
Music room…
"You feel far."
"I am."
"I still feel you."
"I'm sorry."
"So am I."
Garden…
"You don't belong to silence."
"Maybe I'm tired of noise."
"Then I hope you find something that makes you want to hear it again."
Four goodbyes.
Four broken hearts.
"Where is she?"
"Where your friendship began."
The abandoned park.
Ayko sat on the old bench.
"You didn't write."
"I wanted to see where you'd come."
"I went to everyone… and all I could think about was you."
"Don't disappear."
"I won't."
The quiet inside him shattered.
For the first time in days…
He felt pain.
He felt love.
He felt home.
And at the end of the empty road…
He found her.
