Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: A Woman from His Past — Trouble ArrivesBy Amanda Ahamefule Ugosina

The trouble didn't arrive loudly.

It slipped in quietly, disguised as confidence, heels clicking softly against marble floors, a smile sharp enough to cut.

Zara sensed it before she saw it.

She was at her desk, pretending to focus on her screen while the office buzzed with the aftermath of the board meeting. Whispers still floated through the air. Some curious. Some judgmental. Some admiring.

Her phone vibrated with a new email, but she didn't open it.

Instead, her eyes lifted.

The elevator doors slid open.

A woman stepped out.

She was tall, elegant, dressed in a fitted cream blazer that screamed money and control. Her hair fell in glossy waves, perfectly styled, not a strand out of place. She moved like she owned the building—or had once believed she did.

Zara's chest tightened.

The woman scanned the floor with slow precision, her gaze calculating. When her eyes landed on Adrian's office, her lips curved into a knowing smile.

That smile unsettled Zara more than anything else.

"Who is that?" someone whispered nearby.

"I don't know… but she looks important."

The woman walked straight toward the receptionist.

"I'm here to see Adrian Cole," she said, voice smooth, confident. "He's expecting me."

The receptionist hesitated. "Do you have an appointment?"

The woman's smile deepened. "You could say that."

Zara's fingers curled against her desk.

Across the office, Adrian stepped out of his office at the same moment.

Their eyes met.

For the briefest second, the calm he always carried cracked.

Zara saw it.

Surprise. Recognition. Something darker.

The woman turned, following his gaze.

"Adrian," she said warmly.

She crossed the space between them with ease, as if she had done it a hundred times before.

Zara watched, frozen, as the woman stopped in front of him.

"You look the same," the woman continued. "Still pretending nothing rattles you."

Adrian recovered quickly. His expression smoothed into polite neutrality.

"Lena," he said. "What are you doing here?"

So she had a name.

Lena.

Zara repeated it silently, trying to understand why it already felt like a threat.

"I could ask you the same," Lena replied lightly. "But clearly, you're doing very well for yourself."

Her eyes flicked past him—briefly—to Zara.

It was quick. Sharp. Assessing.

Then the smile returned.

"I was in town," Lena said. "I thought it would be rude not to stop by."

Adrian's jaw tightened. "This isn't the best time."

"It never is," she said. "But that's never stopped us before."

The tension between them was immediate and unmistakable.

The office had gone quiet. Everyone pretended not to listen while listening to everything.

Adrian glanced around. "My office. Now."

Lena nodded as if she'd expected nothing else.

As they turned away, Lena paused. She looked directly at Zara.

Up close, her eyes were piercing.

"And you must be…" Lena began.

Zara stood slowly. "Zara."

Lena smiled. "Of course you are."

The way she said it felt deliberate, like she already knew.

Before Zara could respond, Lena turned and followed Adrian into his office.

The door closed behind them.

A collective exhale swept through the room.

Zara sank back into her chair, pulse racing.

Who was she?

And why did Adrian look like he'd just seen a ghost?

Inside Adrian's office, the air was thick.

"You shouldn't be here," Adrian said flatly.

Lena set her purse down and took a seat without being invited. "You always say that."

"This isn't a game," he replied.

She laughed softly. "It never was. That's what made it interesting."

Adrian crossed his arms. "What do you want, Lena?"

She studied him for a moment, her expression shifting—just slightly—into something more serious.

"I heard about the investigation," she said. "I also heard about the little assistant who stood up for you."

His eyes narrowed. "You've been digging."

"I'm always digging," she said. "It's how I survive."

He said nothing.

Lena leaned back. "You're in trouble, Adrian. Bigger trouble than you think."

"I can handle it."

She smiled. "You always thought you could."

"Why now?" he asked. "Why show up after all these years?"

Her gaze softened, but only briefly. "Because your mess is about to become mine."

Outside, Zara tried to focus on her work.

She failed.

Every few minutes, her eyes drifted toward Adrian's office door. It stayed closed.

Her mind filled in the blanks.

The familiarity between them. The tension. The name spoken with history behind it.

A woman from his past.

And not just any woman.

"Zara," a colleague whispered, leaning over. "Do you know her?"

Zara shook her head. "No."

But it felt like a lie.

Minutes stretched into an hour.

Then the door opened.

Lena stepped out first.

She looked perfectly composed, but her eyes were sharper now, colder.

Adrian followed, his expression unreadable.

Lena adjusted her blazer and turned to him. "We'll talk again."

"We're done," he said.

She leaned closer, lowering her voice. "You don't get to decide that."

Then she turned—and walked straight toward Zara.

Zara stood instinctively.

Lena stopped inches away.

"So," Lena said, smiling. "You're the one."

"The one what?" Zara asked.

"The one who's suddenly very important," Lena replied. "You're brave."

Zara held her ground. "I just did my job."

Lena chuckled. "No. You did more than that."

Her eyes flicked to Adrian. "Be careful."

Then she looked back at Zara. "People who stand too close to Adrian tend to get burned."

With that, she walked away.

The elevator doors closed behind her.

Silence followed.

Adrian approached Zara. "Ignore her."

Zara crossed her arms. "Who is she?"

He hesitated.

"That's not an answer," Zara added.

Adrian exhaled slowly. "She's someone I used to trust."

"Used to?" Zara asked.

"Yes."

The word carried weight.

"What does she want?" Zara pressed.

"She says she's here because of the investigation," Adrian replied. "But with Lena, there's always more."

Zara nodded, unease settling deep in her chest.

The rest of the day passed in a blur.

By evening, the office emptied, but Zara stayed behind, staring at her screen without seeing it.

Adrian emerged from his office, coat in hand.

"You should go home," he said gently.

"So should you," Zara replied.

He gave a tired smile. "Tomorrow will be worse."

She hesitated. "Adrian… is she a threat?"

He considered the question carefully.

"Yes," he said honestly. "To both of us."

That answer scared her more than any lie would have.

As Zara gathered her things, her phone buzzed.

An unknown number.

She hesitated, then answered.

"Zara," a familiar voice said.

Her stomach dropped.

"Lena," Zara said slowly.

"I thought we should talk," Lena continued smoothly. "Woman to woman."

Zara's grip tightened. "About what?"

"About Adrian," Lena replied. "And what you've gotten yourself into."

Zara looked up to find Adrian watching her, concern etched into his face.

"I'm listening," Zara said.

"Good," Lena replied. "Because this is only the beginning."

The call ended.

Zara stared at her phone, heart pounding.

Trouble had arrived.

And it knew her name.

Who do you think Lena really is—ally or enemy?

What secrets from Adrian's past is she bringing with her?

Should Zara trust her instincts or confront Adrian for the full truth?
