Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: Ragnarok -l-

The wasteland of the Ragnarok sector stretched out as a desolate graveyard of hope, the final line of defense for a fading humanity. In its jagged heart sat the Final Base, a fortress of cold steel and heavy artillery that bristled against the horizon. The GDA armies stood before it in a terrifying, absolute silence—a calm before the storm. At the very front of the vanguard, Victoria gripped the handle of her massive hammer with such ferocity that her knuckles bled against the cold grip.

Then, the silence shattered.

A sickening, rhythmic cracking noise echoed across the plains as thousands of Battle Master Tanks crested the rise like a tide of iron. Behind them marched the true nightmares of the Awakened Army: Corrupted Zealots, Dread Knights, and the winged, faceless horrors known as Vile Seraphs.

The Advisor's voice crackled over every loudspeaker in the sector, a command that felt like a death sentence: "ATTACK!"

The GDA surged forward, their battle cries instantly swallowed by the roar of engines and the thunder of boots. Victoria led the charge. She launched herself into the air, her hammer glowing with a blinding kinetic radiance, and brought it down upon the mask of a Vile Seraph, shattering its head like brittle glass. She hit the ground in a tight roll, springing up to slam her weapon into the earth; the resulting shockwave flipped an oncoming transport as if it were a toy.

A Battle Master Tank zeroed in on her position. BOOM. A high-explosive shell detonated at her feet, kicking up a wall of fire and debris. But before the shrapnel could find her flesh, a GDA Medic triggered a high-frequency booster. A shimmering, translucent shield wrapped around Victoria, swallowing the blast.

"Don't worry!" the Medic bellowed over the cacophony of war. Victoria gave a sharp, wordless nod and plunged back into the meat-grinder of the front lines.

The Unstoppable Glacier

High above the base, the Large Laser Cannon hummed with a low, predatory vibration. A beam of pure white light lanced across the sky, vaporizing a swarm of Cursed Devourers in a single stroke. But even as the sky cleared, a shadow fell over the infantry below—a weight that seemed to press the very air out of their lungs.

The Cursed Pusher arrived. A massive, bulky humanoid, it groaned with the weight of a mountain-sized stone slab it shoved before it. Its gray skin was webbed with ancient cracks, and its eyes were bound by a tattered maroon bandana, the clothes of a prisoner hanging from its frame. It moved like an unstoppable glacier, ignoring the hail of bullets that bounced harmlessly off its hide.

The Laser Cannon on the base tilted downward, its core shifting from white to a volatile purple. WHIRRR-ZAP. The beam struck the Pusher's center, disintegrating the giant and its monolithic wall into a towering cloud of drifting ash.

The Father's Watch

Inside the command center, the Advisor stood before a wall of flickering monitors. His hands trembled slightly as he held a crumpled, faded photograph. Beneath the visor of his helmet, his eyes were clouded by a tired, blank stare—the gaze of a man who had seen too many worlds end.

"Re-position the third army," he commanded, his voice hollow and thin.

On the screen, Victoria was a blur of righteous motion, her hammer crushing tank hulls with every swing. But then, a Parasite—a twitching, multi-legged mass of corruption—leaped from the shadows of the wreckage and latched onto her face.

Victoria's scream was cut short. Her body jerked with a violent, unnatural rhythm. Her hammer, once a beacon of protection, began to glow with a dark, sickly purple light. She turned upon her own squad, her movements suddenly frenzied and animalistic. With a roar of corrupted power, she slammed her hammer into a GDA soldier, sending him spiraling through the air.

The surrounding infantry raised their rifles, their fingers tightening on the triggers to bring down the new threat, but the Advisor's voice barked over the comms with a sudden, sharp authority: "STOP! Focus on the enemy. Leave her to me."

The blank stare in the Advisor's eyes vanished, replaced by a deep, agonizing worry. He watched the screen with a breaking heart as he saw his daughter fall into the very darkness they had sworn to fight.
