Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4: THE INVITATION

The hallway felt the same, but whenever I thought of Zack, I accidentally smiled. I didn't know why. Maybe he was special, and I couldn't stop thinking about him.

Entering class with a smile, everyone was shocked. Most importantly, Luke Chris. I showed him self-possession.

I sat. Zack leaned over. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, much better," I said, hiding my tears.

"Speak with me whenever you're ready,"

Zack said. I nodded.

Science teacher Mrs. Mark arrived. This time, I focused on the lesson—not the stares.

After class, Zack came over, apologizing. "Sorry, Jane. I shouldn't have left you alone."

"It's okay, Zack."

The bell rang. Lunch. We walked to the cafeteria.

I asked, "What did you and Victor talk about?

Do you know him? How do you know him?"

"Girl, stop with the questions," he laughed.

"I'll explain later."

"Yeah, sure," I said, rolling my eyes. We laughed together.

Later, we got lunch and sat together. No one surrounded Zack this time.

"Wow, looks like everyone suddenly hates me," he said, glancing around.

"No, Zack. They don't hate you. They hate me," I murmured.

"Well, Jane… why did you reject my offer?" he asked sadly.

"Bec-because I like walking more than riding in a car with a handsome boy."

"So… I'm handsome?" he smirked. "Then why did you say I looked like a kidnapper?"

I blushed. "Just kidding. I was teasing you."

"Why tease me?"

"Because you were showing off your car… wait. Are you rich?"

"Maybe. By the way, Jane, I'm leaving this afternoon for an important function,"

he said. He hesitated, then softly asked, "Can you go to dinner with me, Jane?"
