But our eyes held a truth far deeper than his words. It wasn't just about my injury or the lingering ache; it was this magnetic pull, this desperate need to be close.
I didn't know if this was right—it likely wasn't—but I moved anyway. I shifted onto the mattress, sinking into the spot next to him. As he adjusted to make room, I heard a low curse and a sharp, hissed intake of breath.
