When the King said he wanted to take me somewhere, I imagined something straight out of a romance book. A glass house, a quiet lakeside, perhaps some hidden lover's cottage in town.

I did not expect the middle of the woods.

The King stood ahead of me, sword drawn, its blade catching the dim moonlight. I had not even known he brought one. He pointed it toward men dressed in black masks and fitted assassin cloth, each of them holding their own swords, bodies low ready attack.

Okay. How did we land here?

Just moments ago, I had been inside the carriage, my hands roaming over the soft cushions. I shifted and bounced slightly in my seat, unable to hide my excitement, a giggle slipping out as the carriage rocked gently.

The King stared at me, mouth slightly open.

"You have never ridden a carriage?" he asked, surprise threading his voice.

I nodded, still avoiding his gaze. "In my world, we have cars."

"Cars?" His brow furrowed.
