"Are you afraid of me?"
Drogo voice was quiet but something underneath it was wrong.
He was calm.
Too calm — Not after what he had just done with his bare hands...
Karen's lips quivered violently, but her throat refused to open. No sound escaped.
The metallic scent of blood reached her nose as he climbed onto the bed, the mattress dipping under his weight.
"You don't have to be scared, Schatzi" Drogo murmured in a soft tone, tilting his head as he studied her paralysis with unsettling interest. "You're not lying to me."
His jaw tightened faintly.
"They lie," he whispered with a gleam in his eyes. A gleam she had never seen before.
Drogo added, "Every single one of them lied. They always do..."
He leaned closer.
"But you…" His lips curved. "You would never lie to me, Schatzi."
The sound of the German pet name he'd given her now felt heavier in her chest.
Karen wanted to shake her head, to deny whatever twisted certainty he had built around her. Her body remained numb.
Drogo then raised his hand, blood dripping from his fingertips onto the sheets.
His fingers touched her cheek, still warm.
He then dragged them slowly across her skin, leaving a dark red streak as though marking her.
"You're not scared of me…" he decided softly, almost reverently. "Only liars are scared of me."
He leaned down and pressed his blood-smeared lips to her forehead.
"I know you'll never lie to me," he whispered against her skin.
He smiled from ear to ear.
"That's why I love you."
