**EPISODE ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FOUR**
**THE LAST CHARACTER**
---
BLACK SCREEN.
No voice.
No music.
No heartbeat.
For the first time...
nothing was asking Nova to remember.
Nothing was asking him to choose.
Nothing was asking him to continue.
There was only darkness.
Then...
a single word appeared.
TOMORROW.
The word remained.
It did not change.
It did not disappear.
It did not become another word.
Nova stared at it.
Then...
he stepped forward.
The word became a door.
CLICK.
It opened.
Beyond it...
morning.
Real morning.
Not a memory.
Not a dream.
Not a story.
Morning.
Sunlight entered through a window.
Birds moved across a wire.
A kettle whistled somewhere.
A bicycle bell rang in the distance.
Someone laughed.
Someone shouted.
Someone opened a shop.
Someone closed a door.
Someone began a day without knowing it would become important.
Nova stood there.
He looked around.
"This is tomorrow."
Milo appeared beside him.
"Apparently."
Tarzan stepped through next.
He looked at the sky.
"Too quiet."
Milo smiled.
"That's because nothing is trying to kill us."
Tarzan considered this.
"Give it time."
Nova laughed.
It was the first ordinary laugh he could remember.
No echo.
No narration.
No hidden meaning.
Just laughter.
Then...
the laughter stopped.
Because Nova noticed something.
Nobody else was there.
Milo.
Tarzan.
The road.
The houses.
The morning.
But no Original Human.
No Author.
No Reader.
No Dreamer.
No Woman.
Nova looked around.
"Where did they go?"
Milo's expression changed.
"They didn't come."
"Why?"
Tarzan looked toward the horizon.
"They have finished their parts."
Nova shook his head.
"No."
He started walking.
"Milo."
"Yes?"
"We can't leave them."
Milo followed.
"Nova..."
"No."
Nova stopped.
"The story isn't finished."
Milo looked at him.
"Maybe that's the point."
"What?"
"Maybe it doesn't need everyone to be in every chapter."
Nova didn't answer.
Tarzan stepped beside him.
"Your story taught you to release people."
Nova looked at him.
"That doesn't mean I stop caring."
Tarzan smiled.
"Good."
"Why?"
"Because freedom without love is just another kind of loneliness."
Silence.
The road continued ahead.
They walked.
---
08:03
They reached a small town.
People moved around them.
Nobody looked twice.
Nobody recognized Nova.
Nobody recognized Milo.
Nobody recognized Tarzan.
For the first time...
they were strangers.
Nova found that strangely comforting.
He entered a small café.
Milo followed.
Tarzan stood outside.
The woman behind the counter smiled.
"What can I get you?"
Nova looked at the menu.
There were no impossible choices.
No magical words.
No hidden messages.
Just tea.
Coffee.
Bread.
Eggs.
Nova smiled.
"Tea."
Milo said:
"Coffee."
Tarzan entered.
"Water."
The woman nodded.
Three ordinary orders.
Three ordinary people.
Three ordinary drinks.
The world did not change.
Nova took his tea.
It was hot.
He held the cup.
Milo took his coffee.
Tarzan drank water.
Nobody spoke.
Then Milo laughed.
Nova looked at him.
"What?"
Milo shook his head.
"Nothing."
"Tell me."
"I just realized something."
"What?"
"For years, I thought the universe would end if I stopped moving."
Nova smiled.
"And?"
Milo looked around.
"The universe didn't notice."
Tarzan laughed.
Nova laughed too.
The café continued.
A spoon struck a cup.
CLINK.
Someone turned a page.
Someone coughed.
A child cried.
A radio played softly.
Life continued.
Without them being the center of it.
Nova looked at the window.
Outside...
a little boy was drawing with a red pencil.
Nova froze.
Milo noticed.
"Nova?"
The child drew on the pavement.
A house.
A tree.
A person.
Then...
a door.
Nova stood.
He walked outside.
The child looked up.
"Hello."
Nova smiled.
"Hello."
"What are you doing?"
"Drawing."
"Who is that?"
The child pointed at the person.
"My father."
"And the woman?"
"My mother."
"And this?"
"The house."
Nova looked at the door.
"Why did you draw a door?"
The child shrugged.
"Every house needs one."
Nova smiled.
"That's true."
The child looked at Nova.
"Do you want to draw something?"
Nova hesitated.
"What?"
"Anything."
The child handed him the red pencil.
Nova stared at it.
He remembered.
The first room.
The first choice.
The first question.
The thing born with him.
He took the pencil.
The child waited.
Nova knelt beside him.
"What should I draw?"
The child smiled.
"Something you haven't seen before."
Nova looked at the blank pavement.
He thought.
Then...
he drew a road.
No door.
No monster.
No machine.
No table.
No book.
Just a road.
The child looked at it.
"Where does it go?"
Nova smiled.
"I don't know."
The child nodded.
"Good."
Nova looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because then you can go anywhere."
The child took the pencil back.
Then he drew something beside Nova's road.
A small figure.
Walking.
Nova looked closer.
The figure had no face.
"Who is that?"
The child answered:
"You."
Nova stared.
"But you don't know me."
The child shrugged.
"I don't have to."
Then...
the child ran away.
Nova remained kneeling.
Milo stood behind him.
Tarzan watched from the café doorway.
Milo said:
"You're smiling."
Nova looked at him.
"I think I understand."
"What?"
"The story was never trying to tell me where to go."
Milo waited.
"It was teaching me that I could."
---
09:17
The road changed.
Not visibly.
Nothing supernatural happened.
Yet Nova knew they had reached another place.
A field.
Open sky.
Tall grass.
At the center...
a wooden bench.
Someone was sitting there.
The Original Human.
Nova stopped.
The Original Human looked older than before.
Not impossibly old.
Just human.
He was holding a cup of tea.
Nova approached.
"You're here."
The Original Human smiled.
"I live here."
Nova sat beside him.
Milo and Tarzan remained a short distance away.
Nova looked at the field.
"Is this real?"
The Original Human laughed.
"What does real mean?"
Nova smiled.
"You've learned my trick."
"No."
The Original Human looked at him.
"You taught it to me."
Silence.
The wind moved through the grass.
Nova looked at him.
"Are you happy?"
The Original Human thought.
"Sometimes."
"That's all?"
"That's enough."
Nova nodded.
"What do you do?"
"I wake up."
"What else?"
"I eat."
"What else?"
"I work."
"What else?"
"I talk to people."
"What else?"
"I remember."
Nova looked down.
"And when you remember her?"
The Original Human's eyes became wet.
"I miss her."
Nova waited.
"Does it still hurt?"
"Yes."
Nova looked surprised.
"Then how are you free?"
The Original Human smiled.
"Freedom doesn't mean the pain disappears."
"What does it mean?"
"It means pain no longer decides what you do next."
Nova looked toward the field.
Milo heard the words.
Tarzan heard them.
They both remained silent.
The Original Human continued:
"I thought you would come here to ask me for your real name."
Nova smiled.
"I already know."
The Original Human looked at him.
"Do you?"
"Yes."
"What is it?"
Nova answered:
"Nova."
The Original Human nodded.
"Then why are you still asking?"
Nova thought.
"I guess I wanted you to say it."
The Original Human smiled.
"Nova."
The word sounded different now.
Not a designation.
Not a project.
Not an experiment.
A name.
A choice.
A life.
Nova closed his eyes.
"Thank you."
The Original Human stood.
"Don't thank me."
"Why?"
"I didn't give you your life."
He looked toward the road.
"You did."
Nova looked up.
The Original Human walked away.
Nova watched him go.
No dramatic disappearance.
No transformation.
No final speech.
Just...
a man walking home.
Living.
---
11:42
Milo found a small stream.
Tarzan sat beside it.
Nova joined them.
Milo stared into the water.
"I used to think time was a road."
Tarzan looked at him.
"What is it now?"
Milo considered.
"A river."
"What's the difference?"
"You can't walk backward in a river."
Tarzan nodded.
"Good."
Milo smiled.
"You're getting philosophical."
Tarzan shrugged.
"I have had a long story."
Nova sat beside them.
"What happens to us now?"
Milo looked at Nova.
"I don't know."
Tarzan said:
"We live."
Nova looked at the water.
"And if we are forgotten?"
Tarzan answered immediately.
"Then we were still here."
Milo nodded.
"Memory isn't the measurement of existence."
Nova smiled.
"That's what the Woman said."
Tarzan looked at him.
"Then remember the lesson."
Nova looked toward the sky.
"I will."
Milo stood.
"I want to do something."
"What?"
Milo took a stone from the stream.
He placed it on the bank.
"Nothing."
Nova frowned.
"What?"
"Exactly."
He laughed.
"For once, I want to do something that doesn't change history."
Tarzan picked up another stone.
He placed it beside Milo's.
Nova picked up a third.
He placed it beside theirs.
Three stones.
No prophecy.
No symbol.
No hidden message.
Just three stones.
And yet...
Nova felt something settle inside him.
Peace.
Not complete.
Not permanent.
But real.
---
14:06
The Reader appeared.
He was carrying no book.
Nova looked at him.
"I thought you left."
"I did."
"Then why are you here?"
The Reader smiled.
"Because leaving doesn't mean disappearing."
He sat beside Nova.
For a while...
they watched people walking along the road.
Nova asked:
"What are you now?"
The Reader shrugged.
"A man."
Nova laughed.
"Everyone is becoming a man."
The Reader smiled.
"Maybe that is what happens when characters stop being characters."
Nova looked at him.
"Do you still read?"
"Sometimes."
"Books?"
"Sometimes."
"People?"
The Reader thought.
"No."
"Why?"
"People aren't books."
Nova smiled.
"Good answer."
The Reader looked toward the road.
"Do you know why I was first?"
Nova nodded.
"Because someone needed to hear the first sentence."
"Yes."
"And now?"
"Now I don't need to hear everything."
"Why?"
The Reader looked at Nova.
"Because I learned that not knowing what happens next doesn't mean something terrible will happen."
Nova nodded.
"That's what Milo learned."
"And Tarzan."
"And me."
The Reader smiled.
"Then perhaps the story worked."
Nova looked at him.
"Did it?"
The Reader stood.
"You tell me."
He walked away.
Nova watched him.
No book.
No pages.
No narration.
Just a man walking beneath the afternoon sun.
---
16:31
The Author was waiting under a tree.
His pencil lay beside him.
Nova approached.
"You really stopped writing."
The Author nodded.
"Yes."
"Do you miss it?"
"Sometimes."
"Then why stop?"
The Author looked at the pencil.
"Because I finally understood something."
"What?"
"Writing someone else's ending is easy."
Nova waited.
"Living with their choices is harder."
Nova sat.
The Author picked up the pencil.
For a moment...
Nova thought he would write.
Instead...
the Author snapped it in half.
CRACK.
Nova stared.
The Author dropped both pieces into the grass.
"Why?"
"Because I don't need to control the next sentence."
Nova smiled.
"Neither do I."
The Author looked at him.
"That's why you're the last character."
Nova froze.
"What?"
The Author stood.
"You are the last character because you are the last one who still has to decide whether being a character matters."
Nova frowned.
"I thought the last character was the one who still needed the story."
The Author smiled.
"That was true."
"And now?"
"Now you don't need it."
Nova looked around.
The ordinary world.
The road.
The people.
The sky.
Milo.
Tarzan.
The Original Human.
The Reader.
Everyone.
"Then the story can end."
The Author nodded.
"Yes."
"But something is wrong."
"What?"
Nova looked at him.
"I don't feel like ending."
The Author smiled.
"Then don't."
Silence.
The Author walked away.
Nova remained under the tree.
The broken pencil lay in the grass.
Nova didn't pick it up.
---
18:02
Sunset.
Everyone gathered.
Milo.
Tarzan.
The Original Human.
The Reader.
The Author.
Nova.
No Dreamer.
No Woman.
They didn't need to return.
Their absence was not loss.
It was completion.
The sky turned orange.
Then red.
Then violet.
The Original Human looked at Nova.
"You know what comes next."
Nova shook his head.
"No."
The Original Human smiled.
"Good."
Milo laughed.
Tarzan sat on the grass.
The Reader watched the sunset.
The Author closed his eyes.
Nova stood.
"Everyone."
They looked at him.
"I thought the ending would feel bigger."
Milo smiled.
"It doesn't have to."
"I thought there would be an answer."
Tarzan said:
"There is."
Nova looked at him.
"What?"
Tarzan pointed at the horizon.
"That."
Nova looked.
The sun was disappearing.
Nothing exploded.
No universe folded.
No page caught fire.
The day simply ended.
And tomorrow would come.
Nova whispered:
"That's the answer."
The Original Human smiled.
"Yes."
The sky became dark.
One star appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
Nova looked at the sky.
"I am afraid."
Milo asked:
"Of what?"
"That when the story ends, I will disappear."
Nobody laughed.
Nobody dismissed him.
The Original Human walked toward him.
"You won't."
"How do you know?"
"Because you are no longer inside the story."
Nova looked at him.
"Then where am I?"
The Original Human placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Here."
Nova looked around.
"Here?"
"Yes."
"With you?"
"For now."
"With Milo?"
Milo raised his hand.
"Unfortunately."
Tarzan laughed.
"And me."
Nova smiled.
Then...
the Reader said:
"With everyone who ever read you."
Nova looked at him.
The Reader continued:
"But not because they are keeping you alive."
"Then why?"
"Because you gave them something to remember."
Nova looked toward the darkness.
"What?"
The Reader smiled.
"That a character can choose."
The Author added:
"That a story can let go."
Milo said:
"That time doesn't have to be conquered."
Tarzan said:
"That survival doesn't mean running forever."
The Original Human said:
"That grief can become life."
Nova looked at them.
"And what do I give them?"
Silence.
Then...
a voice came from behind him.
The child's voice.
"Tomorrow."
Nova turned.
The child stood beneath the first star.
Red pencil in hand.
Nova smiled.
"You're back."
The child nodded.
"One last time."
Nova walked toward him.
"Do you still have a question?"
"Yes."
"What?"
The child looked at the horizon.
"Are you ready?"
Nova took a breath.
"For what?"
The child smiled.
"To stop being the character who asks what happens next."
Nova looked at the road.
Then at the sky.
Then at Milo.
Then Tarzan.
Then the Original Human.
Then the Reader.
Then the Author.
Then the child.
He nodded.
"Yes."
The child held out the red pencil.
Nova took it.
This time...
the pencil did not write.
It dissolved into light.
Nova watched it disappear.
The child disappeared with it.
The road remained.
The night remained.
The world remained.
Nova stood there.
And then...
something happened.
Nothing.
Nothing happened.
And that...
was the miracle.
---
BLACK SCREEN.
No music.
No narration.
No page.
Then...
a tiny sound.
SCRATCH.
Nova opened his eyes.
He was standing before the final page.
The page was completely blank.
Only one number remained.
125
Nova looked at it.
He didn't touch it.
He didn't write.
He didn't ask.
Behind him...
Milo was waiting.
Tarzan was waiting.
The Original Human was waiting.
The Reader was waiting.
The Author was waiting.
The world was waiting.
But nobody told him what to do.
For the first time...
the story had nothing to say.
Nova smiled.
He finally understood.
The ending was not another door.
It was the absence of a door.
The ending was not an answer.
It was the freedom to stop asking.
The ending was not death.
It was continuation without narration.
Nova looked at the blank page.
And said:
"I don't need you anymore."
The page trembled.
The number 125 disappeared.
Nova waited.
Nothing replaced it.
He smiled.
The story had finally lost the ability to name the next episode.
Then...
a sentence appeared.
Very slowly.
Not written by Nova.
Not written by the Author.
Not written by the Reader.
Not written by anyone.
THIS IS NOT THE END.
Nova stared.
Then another sentence appeared.
THIS IS LIFE.
Nova closed his eyes.
The page disappeared.
