Chapter 44 - Wood, Sweat, and Tears

Morning in the cabin brought sunlight, birdsong, and the sound of the Crown Prince of the Empire retching.

Elian sat up in the pile of furs. "Morning sickness?"

"Guilt," Cassian choked out, leaning over a bucket in the corner. "I slept with you. I held you. I betrayed her in my dreams."

Elian rubbed his eyes. "You held me because it was freezing, and you didn't betray anyone. You just snored."

Cassian stood up, wiping his mouth. He looked wild. His hair was a mess, his tunic was rumpled, and his eyes were manic.

"I must do penance," Cassian declared. "I will write her a sonnet. A thousand sonnets. I will carve her name into every tree in this forest."

He grabbed a piece of charcoal from the cold fireplace and looked around for paper. Finding none, he grabbed a piece of flat bark.

"Oh no," Elian whispered.
