Chapter 5 - Run

Director Li Pubin also had a bead of cold sweat running down his forehead. He recognized the person Jiang Yan was holding.

It was Song Qing!

Li Pubin began trying to persuade Jiang Yan, who was roaring while simultaneously looking for an escape route.

Song Qing, who was in his grasp, was already lifeless. His rage had subsided considerably, and he was no longer as impulsive as before.

Woo—!

Police sirens constantly sounded in the distance. Jiang Yan looked toward both sides of the street.

Several black vans were approaching with sirens blaring. That was the City Riot Squad, and their weapons were far superior to those carried by the Inspectors.

Seeing this, Jiang Yan used Song Qing's corpse as a shield, quickly moving onto the street about two meters from the wall.

Opposite the Song Family residence was a three-meter-high yellow wall that stretched to the ends of both sides of the street.

When Li Pubin saw Jiang Yan starting to move, he immediately shouted, "Jiang Yan! What are you trying to do!"

Jiang Yan turned his head to look at Li Pubin and Wang He beside him, sneering, "Hmph! You'll find out soon enough!"

As he spoke, his left hand, which was holding Song Qing, suddenly exerted force, slamming Song Qing's head violently onto the ground.

Bang! Song Qing's head smashed onto the hard road and exploded, scattering red and white matter everywhere.

In that instant, Jiang Yan exerted immense force, charging toward the wall, stepping on the surface, and using the reactionary force to easily flip over it.

Bang bang bang!

Just as he moved, continuous bursts of gunfire erupted behind him, the bullets hitting the wall and blasting small holes.

Everything happened too fast; the Inspectors only managed to open fire when they saw Jiang Yan making a move, but they couldn't keep up with his speed at all.

Li Pubin stared in shock at Jiang Yan, who had vaulted the wall in a flash. He was stunned for a moment, then shouted angrily at the Inspectors standing around, "What are you staring at? Go save them!"

"Wang He, take a team and go after him. This kind of extreme criminal should be shot on sight; don't leave him alive!" he ordered Wang He, who was standing beside him.

"Understood!" Wang He immediately nodded at him, then shouted to the other Inspectors, "Second Team, follow me!"

With that, Wang He immediately ran toward the end of the wall, and seven people from the Inspector team split off to follow him.

After Wang He set off in pursuit, Li Pubin took out his phone and started calling for reinforcements to track down Jiang Yan.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the wall was a commercial street.

After rushing in, Jiang Yan ignored the stares of the surrounding pedestrians and quickly ran west.

That area was the Old District, which not only had fewer surveillance cameras but also bordered a wilderness outside the city limits, making it perfect for escape.

During this period, the entire HQ City was engulfed in the sound of sirens.

A few hours later, the area outside the Song Family Castle was filled with riot soldiers carrying rifles.

Eight corpses lay on the ground, and forensic doctors in white coats were taking photos with cameras.

Li Pubin stood nearby, looking at the horrific state of the corpses, holding a cigarette in one hand, and nervously lit it.

Beside him was Dean Chen, who had initially fled but returned, and a dignified-looking middle-aged man in a black suit.

In front of them, an Inspector held a laptop facing them, displaying Jiang Yan's every move from outside to inside the castle.

After a moment, Dean Chen said with a complicated expression, "No matter how many times I watch it, it's unbelievable. This Jiang Yan is simply a humanoid monster."

He tore off a car emblem with his bare hands, pierced the windshield, and blew up a head, then stabbed Song Yi to death with a table leg from three or four meters away.

None of these things could be accomplished by an ordinary person.

Dean Chen was now grateful that he had run away early; if he had stayed, he might have died too.

Mayor Wu, wearing the suit, spoke with a solemn expression, "This is no longer within the scope of a normal person. Plus, how he went from being a crippled invalid to this..."

After smoking a cigarette and calming down, Li Pubin looked at Mayor Wu, "Mayor, are you suggesting that Jiang Yan might have Awakened?"

Mayor Wu nodded seriously, "Not might have—it's one hundred percent. Only Awakening could allow a paralyzed person to stand up."

As soon as he said this, the three people present fell completely silent.

Two types of supernatural powers exist in this world: Martial Arts and Awakened Ones.

Martial Arts can be cultivated diligently, allowing an ordinary person to gain powerful physical strength, and even generate Qi, a supernatural force, in the later stages of cultivation!

Awakened Ones, however, are much more unique. One of the prerequisites for Awakening is related to emotion, and their abilities are bizarre and varied.

Most ordinary people only know about the existence of Martial Arts, and specifically the kind of Martial Arts that cannot defeat firearms.

The existence of Awakened Ones has been deliberately blocked by various countries worldwide, separating them into a world distinct from ordinary people.

"If Jiang Yan is an Awakened One, then this matter is beyond our ability to handle," Dean Chen said, looking at the two men.

Mayor Wu nodded, "I know. I have already contacted the higher authorities."

Mayor Wu then looked at Li Pubin, "Director Li, send people to continue tracking Jiang Yan's whereabouts. Once the higher authorities arrive, you can withdraw, but seal off the news about this place immediately."

"Yes, sir!" Li Pubin replied seriously.

After Wu Peng finished arranging everything, he took a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. Just as he put one in his mouth, Li Pubin immediately took out a lighter and lit it for him.

"Hoo!" Wu Peng exhaled, his eyes flashing with a strange light as he looked at the corpses on the ground.

'It really is better to be low-key.'

Nighttime, outside a small restaurant on the edge of the Old District.

Wang He looked at the few Inspectors from the Second Team with a tired expression and said, "The Riot Squad has taken over our mission now. Let's call it a day and go back to rest."

"Yes, Team Leader Wang!" The Inspectors of the Second Team saluted Wang He and immediately dispersed.

They had been chasing Jiang Yan for almost half a day, and after reaching this point, no one had seen any sign of him.

Ahead of them was a dense forest. If Jiang Yan ran inside, the few of them wouldn't be able to find a single hair on him.

After his subordinates dispersed, Wang He also walked toward the city area.

"This damn place doesn't even have a taxi. I have to walk all the way to the main road," Wang He muttered, spitting on the ground as he walked forward.

He was practically exhausted now. He usually worked in an office and never exercised, yet today he had chased Jiang Yan through the city for half a day.

If his subordinates hadn't split into teams along the way, asking questions and pursuing, combined with the colleagues who came to support them, they might not have even known Jiang Yan had run into the wilderness.
