Chapter 56 - Chapter 56

"Alright, Maya, for this one, a little lower angle, I think. Capture the heroic V-taper, yes?" Ranger instructed, striking a classic bodybuilder's front lat spread. "Can't have J. Jonah Jameson accusing me of skipping leg day, or worse, implying I wear padding under the suit. The ignominy!"

Maya, blushing furiously but her photographer's eye surprisingly focused, adjusted the hovering camera drone. "Okay… hold it… perfect." Click. "You know." she mumbled, her gaze darting from the camera feed to him and back, "you really do have… a lot of… muscles."

"Indeed! For vanquishing villains, and—" he flexed a bicep—"for impressing the discerning young populace. A hero's physique is a multifaceted tool, Maya. Don't you think so?" He shifted into a most muscular pose, his chest muscles contracting and bouncing with a controlled ripple. Click.

Maya just nodded, a small, almost dazed sound escaping her as she snapped another picture, her head bobbing in agreement with his every word. She was about to suggest another angle when a new voice, cool and laced with an unmistakable edge, cut through the air.

"Ranger. What in the seven hells do you think you're doing, corrupting an innocent girl with your… exhibitionism?" Natasha stood at the edge of the porch, arms crossed, one perfectly sculpted eyebrow arched in disapproval.

"Hey, now, 'corrupting' is such a strong word, Natasha." Ranger said, not bothering to cover himself, instead smoothly transitioning into a relaxed, hands-on-hips pose. "I merely asked if she'd be willing to assist in a vital public relations endeavor. She agreed. I've done nothing untoward. Besides." he winked at the still-hovering camera, "I'm just clicking some pictures for the Daily Bugle. A proactive measure, you see. Can't have J. Jonah Jameson blaming me, as he does the poor Spider-boy, for simply wearing a face protector and maintaining a necessary mystique." Click. The camera dutifully captured the moment.

"And you." Natasha said, her voice dangerously soft as she strode towards Maya, "are enabling him." She plucked the camera control interface from Maya's startled grasp. With a sharp, decisive movement, she crushed it, the advanced tech crumbling into sparking fragments in her grip. "Honestly, Maya. Go back inside. This man." she flicked a contemptuous glance at Ranger, "is a walking, talking bad influence. He'll eat you alive and not even have the decency to look guilty about it."

Natasha gave Maya a gentle but firm nudge towards the door. Maya looked from Natasha's stern face to Ranger's amused one, a flicker of reluctance in her eyes, but she ultimately obeyed, casting one last, long look over her shoulder before disappearing inside. Ranger, however, could still see the top of Maya's head peeking almost comically from behind the window curtain, trying, with all the subtlety of a teenager, to remain unseen. Natasha noticed it too, her lips tightening in the spy's equivalent of a long, exasperated sigh.

"Why not just give that girl your shirtless pictures directly?" Natasha demanded, turning back to Ranger, the broken camera pieces in her hand suddenly short-circuiting as her Widow's Bite gauntlet let out a brief, menacing electrical crackle. "Why drag another, clearly impressionable, young woman into your… affairs?"

"Who knows?" Ranger mused, walking slowly towards her, utterly unfazed by the display of contained electricity. "It might be because I like to keep my options open. Diversify my portfolio of admirers, so to speak. Or." he paused, his eyes locking with hers, "it might be because I was attempting to make someone else a little jealous. Is she jealous though? I confess, the signals are… wonderfully ambiguous." His finger reached out, gently tilting her chin up until their eyes were level. "Yet, I wish to believe she is. Even if she isn't."

He stepped back, his gaze never leaving hers. The ultralink camera drone, apparently having repaired itself or spawned a replacement, zipped past, misting his torso with a fine spray of water. It wasn't enough to drench him, just enough to make the firelight glint off his skin, to simulate the sheen of exertion.

"Would this be more to the girls' liking, Natasha?" Ranger asked, smoothly transitioning into a rear lat spread, his back muscles flaring into an impressive, almost demonic V-shape. "Or perhaps this?" He pivoted, hitting a front double biceps pose, every muscle sharply defined.

Natasha just looked on, her expression a carefully constructed mask of indifference, though a tiny muscle twitched at the corner of her eye.

"Stunned beyond words, my dear spy?" Ranger asked, a teasing lilt in his voice. "Rendered speechless by the sheer aesthetic perfection?"

"No." she finally replied, her voice flat. "Just contemplating the universal, and rather tiresome, tendency of boys to try and be the biggest, most visually dominant presence in any given room."

"For your information, Romanoff." Ranger corrected, stepping closer again, invading her personal space, "I am not aiming for 'biggest' in terms of sheer muscle mass. The correct terminology would be lean, functionally muscular, and aesthetically fit. There's a distinct difference. If you require evidence, I assure you it holds up under scrutiny" He offered a pectoral muscle for her inspection. Natasha didn't move, didn't even blink.

"Boys and their stupid, predictable games." she sighed, shaking her head. Her demeanor shifted abruptly, becoming all business. "Fury has asked for you to be present at the designated rendezvous point in under two hours. His patience is wearing thin. He's prepared to send troops into this town, Sanctum accord or not, if you fail to comply." It was an ultimatum, delivered with cold precision.

Ranger's playful smirk vanished. "If it were any other operative, Natasha, any other woman, I might suspect that the surprising softness, the vulnerability you displayed earlier, was merely a ruse. A carefully calculated performance to gather more information, to lower my guard, before discarding the target like he was nothing more than a spent asset." He shrugged, a gesture that didn't quite reach his eyes. He stepped closer still, their bodies almost touching. "And lucky for me, I am not even entirely myself when I am near you."

Natasha looked him straight in the eyes, her own gaze intense, searching. "And yet, you're the one out here, parading shirtless, orchestrating photoshoots to send to your adoring fangirls, are you not, Mr. 'I-am-not-myself'?" Her voice was a silken challenge.

"Yes, I am." he admitted without hesitation. "I am going to send them. Pictures of me with a shirt on, looking quite dapper, I might add. Pictures of me in the suit, looking heroic. Pictures of me in my full superhero regalia, looking formidable. And yes, pictures of me shirtless, looking… well, you can fill in the blank."

The repaired ultralink camera floated expectantly nearby. "Yet, if you gave me a single word, Natasha. If you simply said 'No.' I would not send any of them. Not a single one." He paused, his voice dropping. "But will you say that word? If you did, it would be nothing short of a miracle. A welcome miracle, certainly, but a miracle nonetheless."

He leaned in, his breath warm against her ear. "And my dear Natasha, you are nothing if not a woman who has learned, through bitter experience, not to believe in miracles."

Eyes met eyes, a silent battle of wills, of unspoken emotions. They stayed still, the air thick with tension. It was Natasha who broke first.

She stepped back, a small, almost imperceptible sigh escaping her. "Be ready in an hour and fifty minutes." she said, her voice cool, professional once more. She turned and walked away, her stride purposeful.

"I'll send you the pics too, you know!" Ranger called out after her, a teasing, challenging note in his voice.

Her steps faltered, just for a fraction of a second, before she continued on without looking back. Ranger smiled, a genuine, if slightly rueful, smile this time.

The ultralink camera, with a soft whir, transmitted the selected photos to Maya, Mia, and Natasha's devices. He saw Natasha, a little way down the street, pause and glance at her screen. Maya, still peeking from the window, ducked down abruptly, clearly having received the notification.

Ranger just smiled, shaking his head.

"I really am not myself." he mumbled, his voice barely a whisper, "when I am with you."

The ultralink camera floated in front of him, its screen displaying a candid shot it had captured earlier: Ranger, his finger gently tilting Natasha's chin up, their faces inches apart, caught in that charged moment of near-kiss, unspoken words hanging between them.

He just saved the photo.

-------

He opened the first chat.

"Okay, Superhero. Those pictures just landed in my inbox and I think my phone almost melted.

LOOK AT THOSE ABS! 🔥🔥🔥 Is that an 8-pack? Or did you spontaneously invent a 10-pack just for this special occasion?!

Because honestly, I wouldn't put it past you."

"The traditional eight, I believe, Miss Mia. Though I do appreciate your enthusiastic speculation on potential anatomical innovations. Perhaps a research project for a later date?" Ranger replied.

"Research? Oh, I am very dedicated to research. Especially the hands-on kind. 💪 But seriously, how are you SO shredded?! I've seen you in those deceptively normal civilian clothes, and they gave zero indication of the glorious physique lurking beneath. You have such an amazing, criminal sleeper build! My jaw literally dropped when I saw these. And, well, other things may have also… reacted. Enthusiastically. 😉" Mia replied back.

[Salivating Dog Meme, followed by a string of fire emojis]

"I could happily sleep on your hard body all night. And I mean sleep, mostly. Probably. You just look incredibly comfortable. And sculpted. Like a Greek god who decided to moonlight as a superhero. 😜"

[Wink Emoji, Kissy Face Emoji]

"Next time, though, and there will be a next time, I think you absolutely need a hot model to be in the pictures with you. For… artistic contrast, you know? To really make your heroism pop. It will be even better. Exponentially. And lucky for you, I know just the right girl for that. Very experienced. Very… accommodating. And she works pro-bono for exceptionally handsome heroes."

[Grinning Devil Emoji, Camera Emoji, Sparkles Emoji]

Ranger couldn't help but smirk. "Let me hazard a guess, Miss Mia. This paragon of modeling virtue, this accommodating professional… she is, perhaps, a resident of this charming, unassuming town? A vivacious and undoubtedly talented twenty-one-year-old whose name, by some strange coincidence, begins with the letter M?"

Seven second later came the reply. "BINGO! CORRECT! You're so smart, Superhero! You see right through me! Just that you missed one tiny, crucial detail: a hot, exceptionally talented, fiercely intelligent, 21-year-old Latina with an even hotter body, a killer smile, and an unparalleled ability to make any photoshoot sizzle. She's very eager to collaborate on future… artistic endeavors."

"Duly noted and filed under 'Future Artistic Collaborations.' Next time, I shall specifically request the professional services of the hot, talented Latina for a collaborative photoshoot." Ranger sent a reply.

"Shirtless. The hot, talented Latina has informed me that the collaboration will only proceed if the primary model is shirtless. Artistic integrity, you understand. It's a non-negotiable clause in her modeling contract."

"Understood. Artistic integrity must be preserved. Though it will take some time. I should be leaving in about an hour. Can't say with any certainty when I will return to this… artistically inspiring locale."

Ranger stood up as he walked to the house.

"Leaving?! So soon?! 😭 But we were just getting to the good part! Then wait! I'll come and give you a proper, memorable farewell. Something to remember me by until your glorious, shirtless return. Be ready!"

Ranger closed Mia's chat, a faint smile playing on his lips. His finger tapped on Maya's contact. Her entire message history was a cascade of expressive, if somewhat flustered, reactions:

[Exploding Head Emoji]

"Wow. Just… wow. 😮"

"You look… very strong, Mr. Ranger. And… very… um… defined."

[Monkey Covering Eyes Emoji]

"The lighting was very good too!"

"I did a good job."

[Thumbs Up Emoji, slightly shaky looking]

Ranger just laughed softly to himself. Such earnest innocence.

His finger then hovered over Natasha's contact. The delivery receipts showed she had opened all the photos. Even saved a few of the more… 'artistically composed' ones. Yet, she hadn't replied. Not a word. Not an emoji. The silence was almost louder than Mia's enthusiastic barrage.

"If you don't reply, Natasha, next time I might 'forget' to include you in the distribution list for such exclusive content. And that would be a profound shame, wouldn't it? Missing out on all this… heroic definition."

He waited a moment, then, unable to resist a final, gentle prod, added:

"Or perhaps you're just too busy admiring the view to type? Entirely understandable. Take your time."
