Chapter 6 - A Class of Monsters... and Me

"Possesses an extremely high level of intelligence, showing possible talent in Array Formation, Enchantment, Crafting etc. A high caliber of soul potency was noted. It was determined after testing that student Guo Chang'an will specialize in areas relating to the soul, with a lesser talent for body cultivation, and the least talent for energy cultivation."

Mr. Nagira had gone through a few students so far, with most of them having a similar kind of result.

They were all exceptionally talented in one or two very specific areas, while lacking in all others. Although this could be described as horrible, with the proper guidance, they could become rarely-seen geniuses in their respective fields.

"Next: Qin Shuyue."

The young woman seated next to Jin Huang stood up, her short curls bouncing as she made her way down to the spotlight.

"My name is Qin Shuyue, I'm 17, and I come from the Purple Star System's Qin Family, Main Branch."

Mr. Nagira nodded. "Student shows heightened intelligence and senses, innate sensory ability linked with exceptional observation skills, possibly due to the bloodline of a God Clan. However, both the soul and energy cultivation talents of the student are negligible, likely suppressed by the power of her blood. Recommendation: Excavating all of the bloodline potential through intensive body cultivation, then both a Soul Awakening Pill and an Energy Gathering Pill of appropriate level."

Qin Shuyue thanked him, then returned to her seat.

"What the heck is a God Clan?" Jin Huang asked as she sat.

Eying him strangely, the young woman said, "God Clans are at the pinnacle of the Earthly Realm. They consist of only the most ancient cultivation families that have either produced Immortals, or currently have an Immortal within their ranks. My Qin Family is part of a God Clan."

"Whoa..." Jin Huang's mouth fell open, amazed and awed at the thought of such things. "I'd never even met a cultivator before I came here. By the way, why did you ask if I'd already started cultivating?"

Qin Shuyue shook her head. "Leave it to a Class 4 student to not even know how freakish they are."

Seeing the puzzled look on Jin Huang's face, she continued, "Let me put it this way."

"Imagine a stream of water flowing, unhindered by anything. Now, imagine a large brick wall is built in the middle of the stream, blocking off the water. What happens?"

"The water just gathers on one side of the wall, and the other side dries up. Maybe a tiny trickle of water makes it through, but not ever the same amount as before." Jin Huang answered thoughtfully.

"Exactly. That stream of water is the energy that flows through the universe into all living beings, and the wall represents mortality. Mortality limits just how much of that energy we can handle. Those without cultivation get little to none of it. Which is why you are so special."

Jin Huang frowned. "But I can't access any energy."

Qin Shuyue grinned slightly. "Think again. Think back to Madam Cho's food. There are multiple ways to access that energy. You happened to do so through digestion. I watched you consume enough vital energy to cause any mortal to expand violently and explode."

Jin Huang gaped. "Seriously? Is it that exaggerated?"

She nodded, "It is. Not everyone can eat Madam Cho's food, especially not in the amounts that you've been. Doing all that without any kind of cultivation base is freakish. Extremely freakish."

While they talked, Mr. Nagira was calling student after student.

"Li Qingyu. It says here that your body is also exceptional, and you possess a rare bloodline that is closely linked to a Divine Beast- the Black Tortoise. To top it off, your energy cultivation talent is extremely high. Although your soul talent is lacking in comparison, it is still of an average level. Further tests revealed, however, a suppression on your bloodline ability that will limit your progress going forward. We'll have to work around that."

Li Qingyu, a tall, short-haired, burly young man with multiple scars, returned to his seat after a silent nod.

"Next, Wu Shen."

A golden haired young man arose, golden dragons adorning his body and hanging from his ears, even accessorizing his hair. He stepped into the spotlight with a small smile.

"His name is really Wu Shen? What kind of celestial grass were his parents on?" One of the students said to his friends.

"He can't be anything too remarkable to have ended up in Class 4," said another.

Clearing his throat, Wu Shen silenced the chatter.

"My name is Wu Shen, hailing from the True Dragon Sect of Ninefold Dragon Range. I turn 16 this year, meaning I'm younger and therefore far more talented than most of you." Crossing his arms, he waited for his results.

The class erupted into something of a controlled uproar, but a single palm strike onto the podium from Mr. Nagira brought them back down.

"Extremely remarkable energy cultivation talent due to an enhanced sea of energy and the spiritual inheritance of a True Dragon. Juxtaposed with a simpler draconic bloodline and an average soul, much work will be needed to make up for this. However, after the final tests, it was determined that there is untapped potential within you, likely from the same source of the spiritual inheritance. Finding a way to tap into this is vital."

Wu Shen snorted coldly and walked back to his seat with a smirk, managing to look down his nose at the students even though he was walking up the stairs.

"Shen Wuyou: An extreme affinity with the Laws of Chance and Luck, a possible connection to a dao related to gambling. Energy and Soul cultivation talent is extremely high, but a frail body creates limitations."

"Bai Qing: Innate speed, high energy and body cultivation talent, a lack of sufficient soul power and soul cultivation talent presents an immense challenge. Further examination revealed a strong connection to and affinity for azure lightning."

More and more students were called up, all of them possessing monstrous talent or potential for a specific area, but having various obstacles in their way. None of their cultivation levels were exceptionally high, but they all presented interesting cases.

Jin Huang, more and more, came to realize that he was surrounded by people that, with time and effort, would become incredible cultivators.

Mr. Nagira called another name, and a subtle change came with it.

"Dao Yuan."

A kind of spiritual and energetic resonance was created at his utterance of this name. A sound like a soft chime rang out, echoing in all the class and- likely- all the academy. The students were stunned by it, finding themselves temporarily unable to interrupt that heavenly chime.

"What was that...?" Some of them asked.

"Was that the legendary 'Resonance of Heaven?' The sound of the Heavenly Daos resonating with its chosen one?"

"Peh! What blasphemy. Don't be crazy, Ye Wuming!"

The student called Dao Yuan stood up from the midst of the chatter and disbelief. Her hair was a bright kind of silver or platinum, with a spectacular sheen. Her skin glowed, her eyes were glittery, and her stature was that of a poised empress. Even so, she regarded those around her with both warmth and indifference, as though she valued all life but also knew that her life was unhindered by others.

She stepped under the light. "I am Dao Yuan, 18 years old, only daughter of the Immortal Tai Yi. I hail from the Tai Family in the Cloudy Star Nebula, and am also part of a God Clan."

Hearing this, almost all of the students appeared deeply perturbed and shocked.

"Daughter of an Immortal?"

"Is she even from the Earthly Realm?"

"Never mind that, how the hell did she end up in Class 4?"

Jin Huang exchanged glances with Qi Shuyue. "I'm guessing that's not common."

"Nothing about it is. It appears the 'Class 4 Phenomenon' is repeating itself yet again."

Mr. Nagira let the students have their time to be shocked before he tapped lightly on the podium. When they became silent, he continued.

"Dao Yuan, you have shown remarkable talent across the board. You possess top-notch ingredients for cultivation of the body, energy and soul, as well as numerous innate abilities and a powerful immortal bloodline. However, your actual synchronicity with all of these ingredients is lacking. Our tests have shown that, of all the boons your possess, you are only about 3% in tune with them. My job is to work with you to determine what is preventing you from fully accessing your talent."

Mr. Nagira sent her back to her seat, and the students followed her with intense gazes. They had mixed feelings about her after hearing her results, but there was no denying that she was a force to be reckoned with.

The competitive spirit that Wu Shen had kindled was only growing more fierce.

Seeming used to it, Dao Yuan started up the stairs before she suddenly frowned and paused.

Her eyes moved, finding a young man with an amazed look on his face that was currently chatting with the girl next to him.

Qi Shuyue nudged Jin Huang and cocked her head in Dao Yuan's direction, "Do you know her?"

"Nope," Jin Huang met Dao Yuan's gaze.

"Hm." Dao Yuan simply made a sound, then turned and continued walking.

"Well that was strange," he said; Qi Shuyue agreed.

It was then that he saw Mr. Nagira looking at him as well.

"You are Jin Huang, are you not?"
