Chapter 11 - Chapter 10 — First Steps into the World

The carriage rattled along the worn cobblestone road, the wheels creaking as Kael leaned back and watched the landscape pass by. Small hills rolled gently into the distance, and the scent of early morning mist clung to the air. For the first time in years, Kael felt the thrill of stepping out into the world on his own, leaving the orphanage behind for a new journey.

He flexed his fingers around the edge of his pack. *This is it,* he thought. *This is the start of becoming stronger.*

The town ahead was small but lively. Simple houses lined the streets, their wooden shutters opening to let in the morning sun. Smoke curled from chimneys, and merchants called to one another from the market stalls, their voices mingling with the chatter of townsfolk. Carriages moved slowly through the streets, and children ran past, chasing a ball or laughing at some shared joke.

Kael smiled. He had never traveled beyond the orphanage and nearby villages, and even now, this town felt enormous. Every corner seemed full of possibility. Every alley might hide something worth discovering. He adjusted the strap of his pack and slipped off the carriage as it came to a stop near the town square.

He had a purpose. Before he could truly grow stronger, he needed an adventurer card. That would allow him to take quests, earn some money, and start gaining experience.

*First stop—the adventurer guild,* Kael muttered to himself as he set off down a side street.

The town square was bustling, but the farther he walked, the quieter it became. He left behind the market stalls, the street performers, and the clanging of the blacksmith hammering away at his anvil. He came to a narrow alley, shadowed by the taller buildings on either side.

A low, shaky sound reached his ears—a cry, muffled and afraid. Kael paused, tilting his head to listen. The cry came again, more desperate this time.

He moved quietly toward the source, his instincts telling him something was wrong. Peering around the corner, Kael saw a scene that made his blood boil.

A man had a young girl pressed against the wall, one of his hands clamped over her wrist while the other roamed where it shouldn't. The girl's bright red hair clung to her sweat-streaked face, and her blue eyes were wide with fear. She struggled weakly, but the man's grip was too strong.

Kael didn't hesitate.

"Hey!" he shouted.

The man spun toward him, his face twisting in anger. "What the—? Who are you? This is none of your business, kid! Go home! Adults only!"

Kael didn't falter. He adjusted his stance and walked forward, his eyes cold but steady. "Stop hurting her."

The man scoffed, sneering. "And what are you going to do? Hit me with that little toy of yours?"

The man shoved the girl to push her hand free and swung at Kael with a wild punch. Kael stepped back and let the punch pass harmlessly by, then countered without hesitation. His fist connected with the man's stomach, the impact pushing the air from his lungs. Another blow to the face sent him sprawling to the ground, his body cracking against the cobblestones. The ground beneath him fractured slightly from the force, but Kael didn't notice.

The man groaned, a groaning mix of pain and shock, his face now bruised and bloodied. He lay still.

Kael turned to the girl. Her body trembled, her hands clutching her arms tightly as if trying to shield herself from the memory. Kael crouched down and smiled gently.

"It's fine," he said softly. "You're safe now."

The girl blinked at him, her blue eyes wide and filled with disbelief. Then, slowly, she leapt forward and threw her arms around him, burying her face in his chest. She cried into his shoulder, shaking with the weight of her fear and relief. Kael held her carefully, patting her back to calm her.

After several long minutes, she finally pulled back, wiping her tears with the back of her hands. "Th-thank you," she stammered. "I… I don't know how to repay you…"

Kael waved his hand. "You don't have to. I just couldn't let him hurt you."

The girl's cheeks flushed a deep pink. She looked down at the ground, then back at him, determination replacing some of the fear in her eyes. "Please… at least let me do something. Anything," she said quietly.

Kael smiled. "Alright. You can help me find the adventurer guild. That way, we both get something done today."

Her eyes lit up immediately. "I can do that!" she exclaimed, her previous fear replaced with excitement.

Kael stood, brushing the dust from his pants. The girl matched his movements, her fiery red hair catching the sunlight. She was stunning—tall for her age, her figure graceful, her blue eyes sparkling now that her fear had subsided. Even in her simple tunic and skirt, she looked elegant, almost like she had stepped out of a noble's portrait rather than a quiet alley in a small town.

Kael chuckled softly. "Alright, let's go. Lead the way."

The girl nodded eagerly, taking the lead. She skipped down the alley, glancing back to make sure Kael was following. "The guild is this way! I know the town pretty well!"

Kael followed at a steady pace. His hand rested lightly on the hilt of his sword, just in case, though the man they had left behind wouldn't be causing any trouble again anytime soon. The town streets grew wider as they walked, the crowd slowly returning, and Kael took in the scene around him. Merchants were closing their stalls for the morning rush, townsfolk carried baskets of bread, and children ran past playing tag.

"This town's bigger than I thought," Kael said.

The girl nodded. "It's small compared to the capital, but it's lively! I come here a lot. My parents—well…" She hesitated, her face briefly shadowed with sadness before she shook it off. "Never mind. I can show you the guild!"

Kael smiled, not pressing her for details. "Alright, lead the way."

She led him down a narrow street lined with small shops and inns. At the end, a building with a high wooden sign swung in the breeze. The words "**Valeria Adventurer's Guild**" were carved in bold letters. Kael's chest tightened slightly. This was where his journey into the wider world would officially begin.

The girl glanced at him. "Here we are! This is where adventurers like you register and take quests."

Kael nodded. "Perfect. Thank you for showing me."

She blushed slightly. "It's nothing. I'm just… happy you helped me."

Kael raised an eyebrow. "Wait. Helped you?"

Her eyes widened. "Well… I mean, you didn't leave me there alone after…" She trailed off, glancing down at her feet.

Kael chuckled, gently. "Don't worry. It's fine."

Her cheeks flushed a deeper shade of red. Kael had seen many reactions from people before—fear, relief, happiness—but this subtle embarrassment brought a strange warmth to his chest. He realized that even as he pursued strength and adventure, there were still moments like this that made the world feel alive.

She looked up, meeting his eyes. "I… I'm called Lyria," she said quietly. "Lyria Dawnstar. I… I'm glad I met you."

Kael extended a hand. "Kael Grey. Nice to meet you, Lyria."

She took his hand briefly, a firm but gentle grip, and then let go, smiling shyly. "I'll come with you to register. I want to see what quests you'll take."

Kael nodded. "Sure. I could use the company."

The two of them entered the guild together. Inside, the smell of parchment, wood, and a faint tang of steel filled the air. Adventurers of all shapes and sizes moved about, some sitting at tables counting coins, others talking with guild clerks, and a few polishing weapons on the racks along the walls.

Kael's eyes scanned the room. *So this is the real world…* he thought. *Full of people like me…people who fight, who survive, who chase their dreams.*

The guild clerk noticed them and smiled. "Ah, new faces. Are you here to register?"

Kael nodded. "Yes. I'd like to get an adventurer card and see what quests are available."

Lyria whispered next to him. "It's exciting, isn't it?"

Kael glanced at her and smiled. "Yeah. I think it's just the beginning."

And as he filled out the forms and handed over his information, Kael couldn't help but feel a thrill he hadn't felt in years. The orphanage, the training, the quiet determination—all of it had led him here. And now, the real journey, the real test, was about to begin.

He glanced at Lyria. Her red hair shone in the sunlight that streamed through the window, her blue eyes sparkling with excitement and trust. He felt an unfamiliar but comforting resolve settle in his chest.

No matter what challenges awaited, Kael knew one thing: he would face them head-on. And maybe…just maybe…he had found the first person who would walk the path with him.
