Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

In the beginning, Vaughn had sincerely considered becoming a respectable prodigy in the field of Potions.

Unfortunately… there were simply too many masters.

When he first began brewing staples like the Invigoration Draught and Blood-Replenishing Potion, the competition had been merciless. Established potion masters controlled the market, and no apothecary had the slightest interest in stocking products made by an unknown child. Sales were—quite literally—nonexistent.

Everything changed one morning when Vaughn overheard his mother grumbling as she washed Ginny's hair. Molly complained that it had grown far too thick again, and that they would need to buy another bottle of Sleekeazy's Hair Potion.

In that moment, inspiration struck.

It felt as though the clouds had parted, revealing a path paved in gold.

After all, what market was more profitable than women and children?

The answer, of course, was none.

And witches, as it turned out, were women too.

Their pursuit of beauty—and fear of aging—made them far more willing to part with their Galleons than most wizards. Even when Vaughn was only eight years old and completely unknown, there were witches willing to try his experimental Beauty Potions.

A few short years later, that gamble had paid off.

What began as a single formula had grown into a full product line. It earned him not only a steadily rising reputation, but also several hundred Galleons each month.

"Vaughn, darling, are you finished?"

A knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts.

He dismissed the system panel and began packing the neatly labelled vials into an empty crate.

"All done, Mum. Has Mrs. Primpernelle's owl arrived yet?"

The attic door creaked open as Molly Weasley bustled in, smiling warmly as she ruffled Vaughn's fiery red hair.

"It's downstairs, dear. Your father's feeding it snacks—no rush."

She reached into her apron and placed a small money pouch on the worktable.

"This is the payment it brought. Vaughn, keep it safe."

"Mum, you can keep it—use it for the house."

"No."

Her voice hardened for a split second before softening as she pulled him into a fierce hug.

"My precious boy, we are not using your money to run this household. Your father and I agreed long ago—whether it's you, Bill, or Charlie—what you earn is yours. And besides, you already help more than enough."

This conversation was a familiar one.

Ever since Vaughn had begun earning money, he'd tried—unsuccessfully—to contribute. And every time, Molly insisted just as firmly.

With her help, he finished packing the crate, adding a Cushioning Charm for safety. Then he carried it downstairs.

On the ground floor, Arthur Weasley had finished feeding the owl and was reading the morning paper.

"Morning, Dad!"

"Morning, Vaughn! Hurry along—the little fellow's getting impatient."

"If you knew that, why didn't you help him pack?" Molly snapped. "Arthur Weasley, what exactly do you do in the mornings besides reading the paper? Vaughn works so hard—some potions take days! And you, his father, never help, never do chores—"

Arthur immediately vanished behind his newspaper.

Another day at The Burrow had begun—marked by Molly's scolding and the irritated flapping of an overburdened owl.

Vaughn merely smiled and went to wash up.

As he passed the enchanted full-length mirror in the hallway, it began to tremble.

"Don't even think about it," Vaughn said calmly, raising his battered wand.

The mirror froze.

Only after he'd gone did it whisper, barely audible:

"…Such a mess."

By the time Vaughn finished, the house was fully awake.

A freckle-faced boy halted outside the bathroom upon seeing him.

"Good morning, Ron," Vaughn said brightly.

"…Morning," Ron muttered.

"Where are your manners? Say brother."

Ron flushed scarlet. "You were only born five minutes earlier!"

Vaughn's grin widened. He remembered it clearly—Ron should've come first. Unfortunately, the cramped space had annoyed him enough to warrant a kick.

Before they could argue further, two identical voices chimed in.

Fred and George appeared behind Ron, flanking him like Aurors escorting a criminal.

"Five minutes older still makes him the big brother, right, George?"

"Absolutely, Fred! Just like how I was born ten seconds before you."

"You're dreaming—I was born first!"

Ron looked ready to explode.

Thankfully, Ginny came bounding over and threw herself into Vaughn's arms, giving Ron the chance to escape.

"Good morning, Vaughn!"

"Morning, Ginny."

He kissed her forehead gently.

Of everyone in the family, Vaughn was closest to Ginny. By the time she was born, he had fully accepted this world—and this family—as his own. The two of them even looked alike, something Arthur and Molly loved to joke about.

Arthur used to say they looked more like twins than Vaughn and Ron ever had.

The morning was as chaotic as ever.

But today, something was different.

Arthur didn't leave for the Ministry of Magic.

Percy sat by the window, staring outside.

Fred and George behaved—for once.

Even Ron sat quietly.

Everyone was waiting.

Waiting for the Hogwarts letters.

When the sound of wings finally beat against the window, Molly leapt to her feet.

A large tawny owl flew in, landing gracefully on the table. Two thick parchment envelopes were tied to its leg, sealed in red wax bearing the Hogwarts crest.

Molly's face lit up.

"Oh, thank Merlin! They've arrived!"

Arthur tried to sound calm. "You always worry too much."

"I was worried about Ron!" Molly snapped. "He hardly ever shows magic!"

"Mum!"

Ron snatched the letters, threw Vaughn's at him, and bolted upstairs.

Smiling, Vaughn picked his up.
