Chapter 20 - Part Two - Chapter twenty

PART TWO: CONSEQUENCES

CHAPTER TWENTY: Unexpected Truths

Lucy sat alone on the edge of her bed, the dim light from the bedside lamp casting soft shadows across the room. Her fingers trembled as she held the small plastic test in her hands, the reality of what it meant slowly sinking in. She had always imagined what it would be like to start a family one day, far in the future—but never like this. Not now. Not at seventeen.

Her chest tightened as a mix of fear, disbelief, and a strange sense of inevitability washed over her. She had confronted John countless times about his indecision, his hesitation, and yet, here she was, facing a reality that neither of them had been ready for. Her mind raced with questions: How would she tell him? How would her parents react? Could she even face the consequences of this alone?

Mike's message had arrived earlier that evening, asking if she was okay, sensing that something was wrong. And she had finally replied, her thumbs trembling as she typed out a simple, urgent plea: "Mike… can you come over? I need you."

Now, as she heard the familiar crunch of footsteps approaching her door, she felt both relief and apprehension. Mike knocked softly before entering, his expression immediately softening when he saw the distress etched on her face.

"Lucy… what's wrong?" he asked gently, moving closer and taking a seat beside her on the bed.

She swallowed hard, her throat tight. "Mike… I… I'm pregnant." The words came out in a whisper, fragile and almost disbelieving.

Mike's eyes widened slightly, but he didn't pull away. Instead, he reached out and took her hands in his, grounding her. "Okay… okay, Lucy. Breathe. You're not alone. We'll figure this out together."

Tears pricked the corners of her eyes as she nodded. "I don't even know where to start. I don't know how to tell him… or my parents. Everything feels like it's crashing down at once. And John… I don't even know if he'll care, or if he'll even stay."

Mike's grip tightened slightly, his voice firm but gentle. "Lucy… whatever happens with him, whatever he chooses… you have people who care about you. You're strong, and we'll handle this step by step. You're not facing this alone."

Her mind flashed back to the last time she had seen John, the way he had stood frozen, unable to make a decision, allowing Melinda to push her further away. Anger, hurt, and betrayal bubbled up inside her. Could he even care enough to handle this responsibly? Or would he run like he always seemed ready to do when things got complicated?

That night, Lucy barely slept. She kept thinking about the conversation she would eventually have to have with John. But each scenario in her head ended the same way—with his indecision, his fear, his inability to act. She realized that she had grown stronger over the past weeks, leaning on Mike, setting boundaries, and protecting her heart. But this—this was different. This was life-changing.

The following morning, Mike arrived at her house, as he had promised, to help her sort through everything. Lucy's parents had already noticed her withdrawn behavior and had asked if she was feeling unwell, but she had brushed them off, unable to bring herself to reveal the truth.

"Morning," Mike said softly, knocking lightly before entering. "How are you feeling?"

Lucy gave a weak smile. "Scared. Confused. Angry. A little numb, too. Everything is just… heavy."

Mike nodded, moving to sit beside her at the kitchen table. "That makes sense. But we'll take it one step at a time. First, we need to figure out how you're going to handle school, your health, and… eventually telling John. But that doesn't mean you have to do it alone. I'll be here, every step of the way."

Lucy felt a small flicker of warmth in her chest. Mike's unwavering support was a lifeline she hadn't realized she needed so desperately. "I don't even know how he'll react," she admitted quietly. "He's… John. He hesitates, he avoids responsibility… and he's been so careless about everything else. How can I trust him now?"

Mike's expression softened, but he didn't offer platitudes. "Lucy… you've already learned to protect yourself, to stand firm in your worth. John's reaction… whatever it is, doesn't change your strength. And if he can't handle this, that's on him—not you."

Hours passed in quiet planning. They discussed medical appointments, school adjustments, and ways to maintain Lucy's independence and safety. Mike's presence was steady, reassuring, and practical, grounding her when the fear threatened to spiral out of control.

Later that afternoon, Lucy sat in her room, staring out the window at the snow falling softly over the town. She thought about John, the boy who had once held her heart so completely, who had been her first love, and whose indecision had led her to this unexpected reality. She thought about the conversations they had, the boundaries she had set, and the heartbreak she had endured. And she realized something crucial: she didn't need his approval to move forward. She didn't need him to act responsibly to protect her own future.

Mike entered quietly, carrying two mugs of hot chocolate. "Here," he said softly, setting one beside her. "I know it's not going to fix everything, but at least it's warm."

Lucy smiled faintly, accepting the mug. "Thanks, Mike. I… I don't know what I'd do without you."

"You'd be fine," he said, a small, reassuring smile on his face. "You're stronger than you realize. But I'll stay by your side anyway."

Days turned into weeks. Lucy began to navigate the challenges of school while processing the reality of her pregnancy. She kept a low profile, avoided unnecessary interactions with John, and leaned heavily on Mike for emotional and practical support. Mike became more than just a friend—he was her anchor, her confidant, and the one constant in a world that suddenly felt unstable.

Then came the day she decided to tell John. She had rehearsed it countless times in her head, imagining every possible reaction. She found him at school, leaning against his locker, scrolling on his phone, Melinda nowhere in sight. Her heart pounded in her chest, but she steeled herself, determined to face the consequences head-on.

"John," she said, her voice steady despite the trembling in her chest.

He looked up, surprised to see her. "Lucy… what's going on?"

She took a deep breath. "I'm pregnant, John. It's yours."

For a moment, he didn't speak. His eyes widened in shock, disbelief written across his face. Then… he laughed. Not a nervous laugh, not a laugh of surprise—but a careless, mocking laugh that made Lucy's chest ache.

"What's so funny?" she asked, hurt cutting through her words.

He shrugged, a smirk playing on his lips. "You really think this changes anything? It's not like I can't handle my life. You're… you're overreacting."

Lucy felt a wave of anger and betrayal crash over her. All the heartbreak, all the indecision, all the pain of the past weeks—it culminated in that one moment. She realized, painfully, that John was incapable of being the person she needed him to be.

Tears streamed down her face, but this time, there was also clarity. She turned, walking away, knowing that she would no longer allow him to control her emotions or her future. Mike was waiting outside, and she ran to him, collapsing into his embrace.

"It's okay," he whispered, holding her tightly. "You're safe. You're not alone. We'll get through this together."

And in that moment, Lucy understood something vital: John's inability to act didn't define her worth. She had the strength, the support, and the determination to face whatever came next. And with Mike by her side, she would navigate the challenges of teenage love, pregnancy, and heartbreak—on her own terms.
