Chapter 1 - What we Wrote in Silence

Chapter One

Nara was hiding in the stall, a closed room. Around 1m to 1.8m bathroom stall. The remains of her undigested lunch float at the bottom of the toilet bowl. She could feel another group of food coming back up. After having half of what she ate thrown up and feeling relieved, she couldn't get the disgusting feeling and taste out her mouth. *I should have brought gum...* She thought to herself. She flushes the toilet and unlocks the door. Washing her hands, she notices one of her best friends, Jess. Nara shakes her hands near the sink before walking up to Jess, grinning. "Hey!" Jess turns her head to see Nara and smiles. "Nara! Hey." They give a quick hug before letting go and chattering. "What was your class before?" and "Oh, I know that relief teacher. They're so strict." and of course the "What's your next class. A that means I have...". After small chitchat, Nara waves goodbye before rushing down the stairs. She stops at the water fountain and rinses her mouth and continues to walk down. After two flights of stairs, she arrives at the small area in front of the building. Spotting her friends she walks to them, smiling. "Hey. How were your classes?" One girl waves softly and everyone else greets Nara. One by one, they talk about their classes and the test coming up. The break seemed shorter today because only after seven minutes the bell rings. Nara realizes she has math and needs to get to the other building across the school grounds so she rushes off back to her locker. Grabbing her bag and squeezing through the large moving crown of students and teachers, she arrives at the start of the stairs. She now moves at a paced speed, walking down the stairs. Finally at the end of the hallway she sees a girl in her class entering the classroom. Nara knows she's not late because that girl never comes late. Nara enter the class and approaches the quiet girl reading a book. She smiles and adds a hi before settling down. The girl looks up, does the same before going back to reading. The teacher arrives a little late and explains the new topic, negative and positive numbers. She groans softly under my breath when they were given instructions. Opening up her laptop and entering the website, she does her work. Glancing around the room she sees girls talking about a problem, boys playing games and some other boys who were working. Students who were finished would decide to play games. Nara suddenly stands up and walks to the teachers desk, requesting if she could use the bathroom. The teacher hands her a pass. Taking it, Nara writes her name and the time on the board before leaving the room. She takes the stairs up to the English wing and heads to the bathroom. Making sure there's no students around, a sudden concoction appears in her mouth before she spits it out in the sink. She lets the tap to run and she washes her mouth out. Nara sighs. "I ate ages ago..." She mumbles to herself. She checks her watch and rushes back to class. Erasing her name off the board, slipping the pass back on the teachers desk, Nara walks to her desk and packs up. Shoving the lose papers into her bag she stands up and waist for the bell like all the other students. The teacher dismisses them and Nara slowly walks behind the crowd, carful not to trip. She nods a goodbye to her teacher and heads to her next class. English. She whines softly and heads up to the English room. They're assigned seats were unfair and clearly not thought through, yet the entire class had to sit in the allocated seats. These tables were quite different though, they were a little old and had an empty slot right beneath the table for books. Nara sits in the corner of the room, away from all her friends. She pushes her English book. Then grabs her reading book and attempts to force it in too before realizing there was something in the back. Nara take out her two books and wriggles her hand under the table before coming in contact with a piece of paper. She takes it out and assumes it's rubbish but notices some letters in the crumbled paper. She puts her books in the slot and unravels the scrap paper. 'This feeling I have, no word can exactly describe it. Whether it is depression, anxiety, who knows. I feel tired even after hours of sleeping, I watch the days blur by felling I'm stuck in place. It's like I swallowed a rock and it got stuck. In my throat, preventing anything I want to say come out. Yet my mind say what others want to hear. I feel mute without having that disability. It's feeling everything yet nothing at the same time. It's knowing you need to reach out, but not having the energy to. It's wanting to be okay, but not remember what okay feels like...' Nara eyes soften and her hand stiffens. She didn't think this was cringe nor weird, yet she felt empathy for the person. She grabs her pen and writes something on the paper. She folds the paper before the teacher could see and pushes it at the back of the slot under the table.
