Chapter 7 - Long night

"You're safe now. You're not falling anywhere." He says firmly, as if trying to convince both Giyuu and himself. Giyuu looks at Sanemi with gratitude, the panic in his eyes slowly fading away. "Thank you for being here... even if you're a grumpy bastard." He attempts to joke again, trying to lighten the mood despite his lingering anxiety. Sanemi rolls his eyes, but there's a hint of amusement in them. "Shut up and go back to sleep, smartass." He retorts, though he stays close to Giyuu, making sure his presence is a comfort.

Giyuu smirks weakly, closing his eyes once more. His breathing becomes steady as he drifts back to sleep, this time with a peaceful expression. Sanemi watches him for a while longer, then pulls out his phone again to distract himself. He starts playing games. As he plays, he receives a notification from his racing group chat, asking where he is again. He ignores it and continues to play, occasionally glancing at Giyuu's sleeping form. He gets another notification, this time from his best friend Obanai. "Sanemi, you better have a good reason for skipping tonight. I thought mizu's tearing up the track without you but he is not there." Obanai responds quickly.

"He called in sick. Said he's taking a break for a while. Must be serious if he's not coming back anytime soon." Sanemi's interest is piqued. Mizu, taking a break? That's not like him at all. He types back, still keeping his voice down so he doesn't wake Giyuu. "Did he say why? And how long?" He's suspicious now, wondering if there's a connection between Mizu's absence and Giyuu's accident. Obanai seems to hesitate before replying. "No details. Just that he needed time. And who knows with Mizu. He could be back tomorrow or never again."

The last part sounds like a joke, but it hits Sanemi differently. Sanemi puts his phone down, deep in thought. The night is quiet except for Giyuu's soft breathing and the occasional sound of the trees outside. He's stuck between his racing duties and his unexpected responsibility as Giyuu's guardian. He decides to text Obanai one last time. "Keep an eye out for Mizu. Something feels off." Sanemi lays on the floor, using his jacket as a makeshift pillow. He stares at the ceiling, unable to sleep properly with his mind racing. The dorm room is small and cramped, making the situation even more uncomfortable. He thinks about how he's going to explain this to his roommates when they return. They're going to have questions about the random guy in his bed.

He groans quietly, running a hand through his messy hair. The floor is hard and cold, and he can already feel a sore back coming. He glances at Giyuu again, making sure he's still asleep and not in pain. The clock on the wall shows it's past midnight. He's going to have to stay up all night if Giyuu has another nightmare. Sanemi reaches for his earphones, putting them in and playing music softly. He tries to find a comfortable position, but it's a lost cause. His eyes start to feel heavy, but he fights the urge to sleep. He doesn't want to risk missing anything important.

He eventually dozes off a bit, waking up every few minutes to check on Giyuu. It's going to be a long night for him. The hours drag on, and Sanemi's body aches from the uncomfortable position. His phone buzzes again with another message from Obanai, but he ignores it this time. He's too tired to deal with it now. Finally, at around 3 AM, he gives up on sleeping properly and sits up, stretching his stiff muscles. He decides to check his phone for any updates on Giyuu's condition or the accident. He scrolls through the news articles, finding nothing new. The police are still investigating, and the hospital hasn't released any updates since they arrived.

He checks the time again and decides to get up and get some water from the bathroom. He moves quietly, careful not to disturb Giyuu as he stands up and walks to the small bathroom attached to his room. As he stands in front of the bathroom mirror, he notices the cuts on his wrists again. He hadn't thought about them in a while, having been too focused on Giyuu's situation. The memories of finding Giyuu bleeding flood back, making him grip the sink tightly.

He splashes cold water on his face, trying to clear his head. He wonders if Giyuu has done anything similar recently. He dries his face and stares at his reflection, his eyes dark and tired. He remembers how Giyuu had cut himself in the past, and how he had helped him through it. But now, he's worried that Giyuu might have done it again while he was unconscious. Sanemi makes a mental note to check Giyuu's arms more carefully when he wakes up. He can't let him self-harm again, not after everything that's happened.

He returns to the room, sitting back down on the floor. He keeps a watchful eye on Giyuu's arms under the blanket, his protective instincts kicking in again. He feels a strange sense of responsibility towards this guy he barely knows, but can't shake off. The sun starts to rise outside, casting a faint light through the window. It's going to be a long day of waiting and watching over Giyuu. The morning light illuminates the room, revealing the mess of clothes and trash from the night before. Sanemi hasn't had time to clean up, and he feels a bit embarrassed about the state of his dorm now.

He hears Giyuu stir slightly in bed, and his attention snaps back to him. He's still asleep, but his breathing has changed - he's starting to wake up. Sanemi leans forward, ready to react if Giyuu wakes up in distress. He notices that Giyuu's eyelids are fluttering, indicating he's close to consciousness. He waits patiently, holding his breath as he watches for any signs of panic or pain on Giyuu's face. Giyuu slowly opens his eyes, blinking against the light. He looks confused and disoriented, his gaze darting around the room before landing on Sanemi. He doesn't seem to remember where he is or what happened yet.

Sanemi remains silent, giving him a moment to process things. He keeps his expression neutral, not wanting to overwhelm him with too much information at once. Recognition flickers in Giyuu's eyes as he sees Sanemi's face. Memories of the accident come rushing back, and his expression darkens. He remembers the truck, the pain, and the hospital. He remembers being alone. He tries to sit up, wincing at the pain in his chest and head. He looks down at his bandaged body, then back at Sanemi with a mix of surprise and wariness.
