Chapter 17 - Hunter Registration

Casian sat in his seat in the back and waited for class to start. As soon as the bell rang, two things happened at the same time.

The door opened, revealing a tough-looking middle-aged man in a dark green outfit, and the room's speaker blared, "Cassian Locke to the office, please, Cassian Locke to the office."

"Cassian, GO!" Mr. Hill commanded while pointing out the door.

His eyes widened, 'They would even play this dirty.'

"Since he needs to go to the office, why don't we register him first?" The hunter official suggested.

Mr. Hill nearly scowled, "I believe this is a disciplinary call."

"There is no way to know that for sure; it will only take a minute." The official walked to the teacher's podium and put down a big box.

"Cassian, get up here." The man called out.

He stood and began walking to the podium; each person he walked past snickered and jeered at him.

"I do not think this is proper; that boy needs to go to the office." Mr. Hill began to argue.

"And what makes you think that?" The man straightened his back and raised his head..

"The school is the one paying for the registration, so I think it would be best to follow the school's operations."

"Are you the damn school?!" The official yelled, "What makes you think I am here to serve you?"

"B-but I am the teacher." Said teacher flinched back the second the man started talking back.

"I don't give a damn who you are! We were told to register every combat-awakened person in the school."

Mr. Hill shrank away, and in perfect time since Cassian was now at the podium.

"Just place your hand on the crystal, and agree to the system prompt that shows up." He spoke like it was a procedure he had done hundreds of times.

The box placed on the desk opened up to reveal a watermelon-sized crystal orb. Cassian obliged to the man's words and placed his hand on the crystal.

[Consent to Status Check?]

[Yes] [No]

Cassian quickly pressed yes. The status check of the hunters' association didn't record stats, attributes, or skills. So he did not have to worry about anybody finding out about his pseudo skill.

The crystal then shone white, and a second later, it shot out a black and blue card at Cassian.

"Good, now go to the office, boy." The official spoke calmly.

He obliged and started walking his way to the office.

While walking, he looked at his hunter card. The card was mostly blac,k but all the lines, letters, and numbers were blue.

It had some of the same information as his status.

Cassian Locke

Level 1

Rank F Swordsman

Hunter Level 1

Merit Points: 0

Hunter Levels are different from normal levels. While both basically displayed power, the hunter level had to be achieved through merit as well.

Hunter levels progressed up to nine, but very few people actually made it to that level. This was because it required vast merit.

The majority of people who received the rank achieved it as martyrs.

To become a level two hunter, one usually had to be level ten and pass a combat test.

Merit Points were basically the currency of the Hunter Association; they could be exchanged through the association, but many other places also accepted them.

Arriving in the school office Cassian was again led back to the disciplinary office with the sour old lady.

"Cassian Locke, it seems you are inclined to trouble." The old lady placed her hands together on the desk.

'I won't be so naive this time.'

"Actually, I have my own concerns that I wanted to bring to you."

Cassian was completely calm; the imposing pressure of an old lady was nothing to a demon king.

"I don't believe that to be relevant."

She dismissed him, but before he could move o,n he quickly added in.

"How can you know if it is relevant if you haven't heard what it is yet?"

He could see her temper rising.

"We are here to add-" She started, but he did not let her continue.

"You see…" The old lady's face turned red. "Of campus-"

"The school does not have any bearing or responsibility for the activities of students off campus." This time, she interrupted him.

'All according to plan.'

"I see, anyway, please continue to the reason you called me here."

He spoke pleasantly, yet there was still a dismissive look in his eyes.

"There are actually two reasons for your summons. There has been a recall for a certain piece of equipment you are in possession of. The second infraction is more serious, so we will save it for later."

"Very well." He was not worried at all. Nothing could be worse than being tortured by a demon.

"The uncommon grade cloak that you became in possession of has been recalled by the school, so you must return it."

Cassian was unmoved, "That doesn't seem right. When my sword was confiscated, you didn't care if it was mine or not."

"This case is different." The old lady started grinding her teeth.

"Shouldn't you go to the original owner of the cloak to ask for compensation?"

He asked, obviously, innocently.

"This case is different; we need the specific cloak back." An almost evil smile grew from her lips.

"Why didn't you say so? Some students mugged me and stole it from me."

"Compensate…" An air of fury came from the disciplinary chair.

"Wait, that doesn't make sense. Shouldn't you ask the person to whom the school gave it for compensation? But if you need the cloak itself, you should recall it from the students who stole it from me?" Cassian took off the innocent facade. A wide frown showed he knew exactly what was going on from beginning to end.

"TSK." The old lady made it fairly obvious that she had given up her pursuit of fraud.

"You are completely right. I will make sure it is handled correctly." The words had trouble leaving her mouth.

'It goes both ways.'
