Nora's POV
The door's gentle creak pulls me from restless sleep. Reality crashes over me like ice water.
Last night wasn't some horrible dream.
It really happened.
Kevin is gone.
"How is she doing?" Gideon's voice drifts through the doorway, barely above a whisper.
"About as well as you'd imagine," James responds quietly.
I hear Gideon enter and place something on the dresser. The rich scent of bacon mixed with sweet maple syrup fills the air. My stomach responds with a loud growl. My body craves nourishment - I'm still recovering from blood loss and the injuries I sustained. But emotionally, I can barely summon the strength to sit upright, let alone eat.
They step into the hallway to continue their conversation without waking me. I want nothing more than to burrow deeper into these covers and sleep until this crushing pain disappears.
Not the physical pain from cuts and bruises.
The other kind.
