James stands near the back shelves, fingers wrapped around one of our bestselling indie romance novels. The cover displays a shirtless male model with his jeans hanging open, perfectly sculpted abs catching shadows against the moody backdrop. When he senses my presence, his gaze lifts directly to mine. The way he can detect me from across the store sends an uncomfortable chill down my spine.
"What the hell?" The words slip out in a harsh whisper. We're separated by several yards of book displays, yet I know his supernatural hearing catches every syllable. Mack weaves between my legs with fluid grace, never once causing me to stumble despite his constant motion.
