Days had passed, which meant tonight was the gala. So much needed to be accomplished before then.
I found myself imprisoned within Jonathan's embrace as his body sagged against mine, overwhelmed with relief. Relief that he wouldn't miss this crucial event. Relief that his reputation might survive another potential scandal. While he held me, my thoughts drifted away from the expensive heels I had just placed back in their box and returned to the closet.
His heated breath caressed my neck while his fingertips traced along my spine. The thin towel wrapped around me only amplified my mortification.
He seemed oblivious to my half-dressed state, to the way I trembled with both chill and burning embarrassment. His focus remained fixed on fragments of hope that he might actually secure his title within the coming months.
