Imprisoned
"Anyone there?"
Mateo's gentle voice drifted from the living room. Dennis pulled away from me instantly, as though our previous conversation had never occurred.
He strolled casually toward the doorway and called out with forced cheer:
"Morning, buddy! How about some cake before school?"
Even from here, I could sense Mateo's confusion and the tremor of anxiety in his response, despite Dennis's convincing performance:
"Cake?"
"That's right! Sweet treats for breakfast! Go get your teeth brushed and we'll join you in just a moment!"
The sound of retreating footsteps faded down the hallway.
Dennis positioned himself in the doorway, watching Mateo's departure with calculating eyes.
His shoulders grew rigid beneath the fabric of his shirt. I clutched my robe tighter around my body.
"Coast is clear now. Get yourself dressed while you can. Food's already on its way, so make it quick."
