Even a base camp could face a sudden sneak attack.

If someone dropped a massive AOE, your little life would be over.

Even without large-scale AOE skills, snatching corpses was common. Various Hidden Villages loved stealing intel or bloodlines. Every side had body collection squads. Naturally, they also had squads dedicated to stealing corpses.

Even obtaining a tiny bit of critical intel could turn the tide of war.

Because of this, the survival rate for body collectors was never high. It was actually quite low. It was only slightly better than the ninjas fighting on the front lines.

However, it was a time of peace. He was safe for now.

He watched the mortuary in silence. Shadows flickered along with the candlelight.

'Fortunately, there are no ghosts in the Naruto world,' he thought. 'Otherwise, I would go crazy sooner or later.'

He had to admit it. He was addicted to opening these loot boxes. Looking at the cold corpses filled him with a sense of warmth. He could not wait to touch more bodies. Even white corpses would do.

But he could not. His daily limit was used up. He had to wait until tomorrow.

He stood up and closed the door. He used a thick chain to lock it tight. These bodies were valuable treasures.

He held his umbrella and walked through the night. It was time to go home.

Home was not far. It was right next door.

Chapter 3: White Bones and Flowing Tears

The sun rose in the east. The morning mist was thin.

The night rain had washed the streets clean. Maruyama Kifu walked out and stretched. He felt refreshed.

He was an orphan. He had set up his home nearby to watch the mortuary better. Others thought he was lonely. He used to think so too. But the System changed everything.

That mortuary was not just a room for the dead. It was a gold mine!

He walked with light steps. A good day started with looting a corpse.

He saw two people standing at the mortuary entrance. Judging by their clothes, they were Anbu ninjas.

Kifu knew how powerful this hidden organization was. They reported directly to the Hokage. They held a lot of power in Konoha.

The ninjas watched him as he approached.

"My lords," Kifu called out.

He ran toward them. He kept his usual honest expression. He acted very respectful.

The two ninjas were not arrogant. They spoke in cold, business-like tones. "This is an Anbu ninja who died in the line of duty last night. You know what to do."

Kifu nodded.

Anbu ninjas were different from normal ninjas. They stayed in the shadows. They had no names, only code names. Mission success was everything.

Usually, the Anbu handled their own dead. Sometimes they destroyed the bodies on the spot. Since the body was here, it meant all Anbu ties were erased. They would notify the family as if he were a normal ninja.

The two men said nothing more. They dropped a scroll and vanished.

Kifu took the scroll and unlocked the chains. He entered the mortuary again.

A cold chill hit him. It gave him goosebumps. Special cooling devices were installed to keep the bodies fresh.

He found an empty bed. He opened the scroll and released the seal.

A decapitated Anbu ninja lay there.

"A single strike to the neck," Kifu muttered. "The power gap must have been huge."

Only a massive difference in skill resulted in such a clean death.

Kifu did not loot the body immediately. He stood there in silence for a moment. He reached out and closed the ninja's eyes. The man's expression was still full of shock.

Kifu put on leather gloves. He changed the body into clean clothes. Then he aligned the head with the torso and sewed them together.

The dead deserved respect.

He wanted the rewards, but he would not just take them. He felt like he was providing a service. He repaired their appearance so they could be buried naturally. The items from the System were his payment.

This made him feel better.

Even in the Naruto world, he was a human first. He had to keep his humanity. Taking without giving would make him lose himself.

He just wanted peace of mind. It did not take much time anyway. This was his job.

He finished his work and bowed. 'Sorry,' he whispered.

A yellow light glowed on the body. This person was definitely a Jonin. However, the light was dimmer than Miura Ichigo's.

'I wonder if he was a weak Jonin or a Special Jonin,' he mused.

He placed his hand on the light.

`[Yellow Corpse. Success Rate: 30%. Would you like to loot? (Uses: 3/3, Daily: 9/9)]`

He chose `[Yes]`.

Perhaps it was because he treated the body with care. The corpse gave him a response. He succeeded on the first try. He decided to keep this mindset for every body in the future.

`[Success! You have obtained Fire Style: Great Flame Flower Skill Card!]`

A skill?
