Chapter 179 - The Race That Leaves Others Behind

The crowd's roar became deafening, a physical wall of sound that pressed down on them. Winning Ticket's heart was racing so fast it felt like it might explode. This was it. This was everything. Her friends, her rivals, all three of them burning at the same impossible intensity, and her body was breaking down with every stride.

Her zone flickered again, dangerously unstable. Terror spiked through her chest because if it collapsed now, if she lost this clarity, she'd fall apart completely. She forced it stable through pure desperation, held it together even as her legs felt like they were tearing apart.

Biwa Hayahide kicked hard and suddenly pulled ahead. The surge was savage, brutal, like she'd been holding back this entire time and finally let everything loose.

"Not yet!" Biwa Hayahide snarled, pushing even harder. "I'm not done yet!"

"OH! BIWA HAYAHIDE'S GOING FOR IT! SHE'S SURGING AHEAD!"

Winning Ticket's eyes went wide as the gap opened, as Biwa Hayahide started to break away.

"I can't let you go, Hayahide!"

Winning Ticket red-blue flames exploded outward in response, raw and violent. She surged forward on pure instinct, closing the gap before it could grow further. Her body screamed in protest but she ignored it, pushed past it, because she couldn't let Biwa Hayahide go.

"WINNING TICKET'S NOT LETTING BIWA HAYAHIDE GO! AND... WAIT—NARITA TAISHIN! NARITA TAISHIN'S FLYING UP THE OUTSIDE!"

Narita Taishin saw them both surge and something fierce ignited in her chest. Her golden amber burned brighter, more violent than before. "You think I came this far to watch?!"

Bang!

Narita Taishin threw everything into one massive kick, her legs driving forward with power that shouldn't exist in a body this exhausted.

All three of them locked together again, shoulder to shoulder, and the zones between them created pressure so intense it felt like the air itself might shatter.

"THEY'RE BACK TOGETHER! ALL THREE OF THEM! HOW ARE THEY DOING THIS?!"

Biwa Hayahide's breathing was ragged now, her silver-purple mist wavering. She could feel her stamina draining away, could feel her body approaching total collapse, but she pushed harder anyway. Drew on reserves that shouldn't exist and kicked again, trying to break free.

Winning Ticket matched her immediately, red-blue flames crackling violently. Her vision was tunneling, black creeping in at the edges despite the zone's clarity. Every stride took everything she had and demanded more. Her lungs were burning, her legs screaming, but she gritted her teeth and pushed through the pain.

Narita Taishin surged on the outside, golden amber pulsing erratically. Her form was breaking down, technique giving way to raw desperation, but she refused to fall back. "This is where I belong!" The words came out half scream, half sob. "Right here with you!"

"NOBODY'S BACKING DOWN! EVERY TIME ONE PUSHES, THE OTHER TWO RESPOND IT! THIS IS MADNESS!"

Hayahide threw everything forward in one massive surge. Her silver-purple exploded brighter and she pulled ahead, the acceleration so violent it looked impossible.

"NOW!" Hayahide screamed, and the sound was pure desperation and determination mixed together.

"BIWA HAYAHIDE AGAIN! SHE'S—SHE'S TRYING TO BREAK FREE AGAIN!"

Winning Ticket felt her heart lurch. Felt panic spike through her chest as Biwa Hayahide started to break away again. Her zone flickered dangerously and for a second she thought it would collapse entirely.

"No!" The word ripped out of her throat. "NO!"

Then something inside her detonated.

"I'M NOT LETTING YOU GO!"

Her red-blue flames roared to life with intensity that made the previous manifestation look weak. The world sharpened to crystal clarity and she moved before thought, her body responding with precision that transcended conscious control. She closed the gap in strides that seemed to warp space itself, pulling back alongside Biwa Hayahide with force that shouldn't be possible.

"WHAT?! WINNING TICKET—WHERE DID THAT COME FROM?! SHE JUST—SHE JUST CLOSED IT LIKE IT WAS NOTHING!"

Narita Taishin's golden amber flared in response, matching their surge. Her teeth were gritted so hard it hurt, every muscle in her body screaming, but she powered through it with pure will. "If you're going!" she roared. "I'm going with you!"

"AND TAISHIN'S STILL THERE! NONE OF THEM WILL GIVE IN! NONE OF THEM WANT TO LOSE TO EACH OTHER!"

The zones were bleeding into each other violently now, red-blue mixing with silver-purple mixing with golden amber. The interference created colors that hurt to look at, pressure between them that felt almost solid. Winning Ticket could sense both of theirs so clearly. Could feel how close all three of them were to total collapse.

Biwa Hayahide's silver-purple was pulsing erratically, no longer smooth, threatening to disperse with every stride. Her breathing had gone beyond ragged into something that sounded almost like sobbing, but she wouldn't slow down.

"Not enough," she gasped. "Still not enough..."

Narita Taishin's golden amber was flickering like a candle in hurricane winds. Her legs were shaking with each impact, her form completely broken, running on nothing but will and desperation.

"More," Taishin choked out through gritted teeth. "I've got more!"

And Winning Ticket's red-blue flames were wavering so badly they looked ready to extinguish entirely. Her body was past every limit, past what should be survivable, held together by nothing but the zone and sheer refusal to quit.

"LOOK AT THEM! THEY'RE ALL BREAKING DOWN BUT NONE OF THEM WILL QUIT! THEIR FORMS ARE FALLING APART!"

Narita Taishin kicked and pulled ahead, her golden amber exploding with renewed intensity. "Come on!"

Winning Ticket responded instantly, her red-blue flames roaring as she closed the gap. "Right here!"

Biwa Hayahide surged and edged forward, silver-purple blazing brighter. "Faster!"

The other two came with her immediately.

"NARITA TAISHIN BURSTS AHEAD—NO, IT'S WINNING TICKET! HAYAHIDE IS FLYING IN FROM THE FLANK! WHO'S IN FRONT?! WHO WILL STRIKE THE FINISH LINE FIRST?! WE'RE ENTERING THE FINAL 500 METERS!"

Winning Ticket's vision was almost completely tunneled now. Black creeping in from all sides despite the zone. Her body was shutting down and every stride felt like dying, but Biwa Hayahide was right there beside her and Taishin was right there on the other side and none of them would quit.

The finish line was coming and someone had to break. Someone had to fall behind. The math didn't work any other way.

But none of them would let go.

Meanwhile, back in sixth position, King Halo had been watching all of this unfold. Watching them pull further and further ahead, watching the gap grow with every stride. The crowd was screaming for them, drowning out everything else. The announcer's voice cracking with excitement as he shouted their names over and over.

Every eye in the stadium, every camera, every spectator locked on those three.

Biwa Hayahide. Winning Ticket. Narita Taishin.

The BNW trio.

Like they were the only ones running. Like this was their stage, their moment, and their race.

Like everyone else was just decoration.

King Halo's breathing came steady and controlled, her form still perfect despite the pace.

But none of it mattered. Because no one was watching.

The cameras weren't on her. The crowd wasn't chanting her name. The announcers barely remembered she existed. Ahead of her, those three were putting on a show, pushing each other to breaking point, creating a spectacle that would be replayed for years.

And she was just another uma musume running in their shadow.

"They've all grown so much stronger," King Halo murmured, and the words tasted like ash. She'd watched them all three year ago from simulation race. Watched Biwa Hayahide evolve from raw talent into a powerhouse. Watched Winning Ticket refine her technical brilliance into something that could match the best. Watched Narita Taishin finally find the strength she'd always been searching for.

Talented uma musume!

They are Uma Musume who embody destiny forged through effort, their stories written in sweat and blood and sacrifice. But their effort was rewarded. The world saw their struggle called it beautiful race, and the crowds roared in appreciation.

Yet effort alone is never the guarantee of reward, never the promise of recognition.

Not every Uma Musume who works hard is granted a satisfying ending. If hard work alone were enough, there would be no story of Haru Urara, stumbling and falling and rising again without ever tasting victory. There would be no story of Fujimasa March, giving everything and finding it still wasn't enough. No tragedy and persistence of Meisho Doto, fighting battles already lost before they began. And no paradox of Seiun Sky, the "lazy genius" who still reached the summit of G1 while others bled themselves dry for scraps.

No matter how fast they ran, no matter how perfectly they executed every stride, no matter what they sacrificed, how much of all of them poured into the race... People would never see someone who wasn't blessed with natural talent, as a true Uma Musume racer. Never see some of them as anything but background noise in someone else's journey.

The thought crystallized into something sharp and bitter, cutting through her chest like broken glass. Something inside King Halo snapped, and it felt almost like relief.

What everyone is looking for is not who works the hardest. Not anyone who has a tragic past and evokes sympathy. But whoever can excel and stand at the top, defeating everyone else. Whoever can create a story worth remembering, worth celebrating, worth believing in. Whoever has that spark of natural talent that makes their effort look like destiny instead of desperate struggling.
