Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Surgeon's Sanctum

Chapter 20: The Surgeon's Sanctum

Lucius

The clinic smelled of antiseptic and old blood.

I'd prepared this place over the past three weeks—abandoned medical facility in District IX, forgotten by city records, invisible to coven surveillance. The surgeon in me had insisted on proper equipment: operating table, IV stands, sterile instruments. The predator had added chains, UV-proof shutters, and enough weapons to fight off a small army.

Now it was serving its purpose.

Michael lay on the operating table, unconscious, transformation progressing visibly. His veins were black rivers beneath pale skin. Fever burned from his body like radiation. The Lycan infection was winning, consuming him cell by cell.

Selene stood by the door, weapons still holstered but hands never far from grips. Her trust was a fragile thing—purchased with shocking claims, sustained by curiosity, ready to shatter at the first sign of deception.

"You said you'd prove Viktor's betrayal." Her voice was flat, controlled. "Prove it."

I rolled up my sleeve, extended the silver dagger.

"I'm going to cut my wrist. You're going to drink. Memory Siphon works both ways—you'll see exactly what I extracted from Kraven's blood."

Her expression shifted. "That's... sire-level intimacy."

"It's the only way to share memories without words. Blood doesn't lie, Selene. Whatever I show you, you'll know it's real."

The blade bit into my wrist. Blood welled—dark, rich, carrying fragments of every memory I'd absorbed since waking in that alley. I extended the wound toward her, offering.

Selene hesitated. The act was intimate, vulnerable, everything a warrior of her experience had learned to avoid. But the promise of truth was stronger than the fear of connection.

She drank.

[ MEMORY SIPHON LV.2 ACTIVATING ]

[ TRANSFERRING SELECTED MEMORIES... ]

I pushed specific fragments into the blood. Kraven meeting Lucian in shadowed tunnels—the traitor's smug smile, the Lycan leader's cold calculation. Kraven's memory of Viktor executing Sonja while Lucian watched in chains—the screaming, the sunlight, the ashes. Viktor's confession about Selene's family, spoken to a subordinate he never expected to betray him: "The mason's daughter reminds me of Sonja. A useful substitute. She'll never know her father died by my hand."

Erika whispering to Kraven about "keeping Viktor asleep longer—we need more time before the awakening."

Six hundred years of loyalty. Six hundred years of service to a monster who'd murdered her family and lied about it every day since.

Selene released my wrist, staggered backward. Her face was sheet-white, eyes wide with a horror I could only imagine.

"This can't be..." The words came out broken. "Viktor saved me. He turned me. He gave me purpose..."

"He used you. A weapon shaped by grief he manufactured."

She slammed her fist against the wall. Concrete cracked beneath the impact—vampire strength expressing emotion that words couldn't contain.

"Six hundred years." Her voice was raw. "I've killed for him. Fought for him. Believed every lie because I trusted—"

Michael screamed.

The sound cut through Selene's breakdown—primal, agonized, the cry of a body tearing itself apart. On the operating table, Michael convulsed against his chains. Bones cracked audibly. His spine arched at angles that should have been fatal.

[ MICHAEL CORVIN - STATUS CHANGE ]

[ LYCAN INFECTION: 67% COMPLETE ]

[ TRANSFORMATION: ACCELERATING ]

[ CORVINUS STRAIN: DESTABILIZING ]

"The transformation is happening too fast," I said, moving to the table. "His Corvinus bloodline is accelerating the process, but the Lycan infection is winning."

Michael's hands twisted, fingers elongating, claws sprouting from beneath human nails. His jaw distended, fangs emerging from gums that stretched like rubber. The chains groaned as hybrid strength began manifesting—strength that would soon exceed their capacity.

"If we don't stabilize him now—"

One chain snapped. Michael's partially transformed arm swept toward my head. I ducked, Enhanced Reflexes screaming, and the claws passed inches from my skull.

"—he becomes a feral werewolf. Lost forever."

Selene moved to the table's opposite side, pressing down on Michael's shoulders. Even her vampire strength struggled against the emerging hybrid power.

"How do we stabilize him?"

"Vampire blood. Now. The transformation needs both infections to balance—Lycan alone makes him beast, vampire alone wouldn't take. But together, with the Corvinus strain as catalyst..."

"We have to turn him."

"Together. Your bite on the shoulder where Raze bit him—vampire venom will mix with Lycan infection at the source. I'll bite the neck, mainline into the bloodstream."

Michael roared—throat reshaping, voice deepening, humanity slipping away with each second. Another chain snapped. His legs kicked free.

"Now, Selene. Or we lose him."

She met my eyes across the thrashing hybrid. Fear was there—fear of what we were creating, fear of what it meant. But underneath, determination. The same steel that had let her kill for centuries.

"On three."

"One."

Michael's eyes snapped open—gold, feral, no recognition remaining.

"Two."

His claws raked the air, caught my coat, shredded leather.

"Three."

We bit.

My fangs pierced the artery in his neck. Selene's sank into the ragged wound Raze had left on his shoulder. Blood flooded my mouth—human baseline, Lycan infection, and underneath it all, the Corvinus strain. Ancient. Primal. The genetic legacy of the first immortal.

[ HYBRID PROTOCOL INITIALIZING ]

[ BP ACQUIRED: 95 ]

[ CURRENT BP: 964/1000 ]

Michael screamed. Not a Lycan howl—something new. Something that combined the rage of wolves with the cold hunger of vampires. His body arched one final time, muscles locking, bones completing their reformation.

Then stillness.

Selene and I released simultaneously, stepping back from the table. Blood dripped from our fangs, from Michael's wounds, from the shredded remnants of his human clothing.

On the table lay something unprecedented.

His skin had shifted to blue-gray—not quite vampire pale, not quite Lycan feral. Claws remained extended but refined, elegant rather than savage. Fangs were visible through slightly parted lips. When his eyes flickered open, one was vampire blue, the other Lycan gold.

"What have we done?" Selene's whisper carried awe and terror in equal measure.

I checked his pulse—faint but steady. Examined his eyes—pupils dilating, both infections fighting for dominance but neither winning. The Corvinus strain was doing exactly what I'd hoped: bridging the gap, forcing balance.

"We created the first vampire-Lycan hybrid in history." I straightened, wiping blood from my lips. "And now we keep him alive long enough to use him."

[ QUEST COMPLETE: ACQUIRE MICHAEL CORVIN ]

[ REWARD: HYBRID FUSION CATALYST + 95 BP ]

[ TOTAL BP: 964/1000 ]

Thirty-six points from ultimate evolution. So close I could taste it.
