Chapter 4 - Pick a Bounty

The talk with the Chief was long but informative. On this world there are four major Kingdoms called Vale, Vacuo, Atlas and Mistral with Atlas being the strongest of them. He's currently in Mistral, which is the largest of them. The world is assaulted constantly by dark forces called the Grimm, weird monstrous beings that he only saw images of thanks to the Chief showing him pictures and other images of these Grimm and their names. Only the common ones like Beowolves and Ursa. From what he learned, Grimm are nasty creatures. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, and it usually takes a Huntsmen or four to take down certain Grimm. Then came to topic of Huntsman and Huntresses. They are apparently powerful warriors who use something called Aura and Semblance to fight back against the hordes of Grimm. Unfortunately, there are Huntsman who go rogue, becoming Bounty Hunters or are in it for profit and not for protecting the people. That fact alone makes Taren sick. Sure, he was a Bounty Hunter, but he at least had morals and did what he did to benefit others than himself.

Huntsman are trained at one of four academies across the globe. Beacon, Shade, Haven and Atlas. Each of these Academies are located in one of the four kingdoms. Beacon for Vale, Shade for Vacuo, Haven for Mistral and Atlas for… well, Atlas. Taren felt it was kind of lazy to name an Academy after the nation it's from. But then came to talk about the world's currency. It's called Lien and the Chief told Taren that he could put his Bounty Hunter skills to good use on Remnant. There's almost an endless number of jobs a Bounty Hunter can do within the Kingdoms. He could help Villages or the Kingdoms themselves to make money. The Chief also told him that he'll need a bank account to store his Lien when he doesn't need it on hand. But that's where they hit a roadblock. Taren doesn't have any documents on Remnant. In Remnant's eyes he doesn't exist and that's a problem. But the Mandalorian told the Chief that he'll just hold onto the Lien physically to avoid questions. Then he heard about the subject of Dust.

At first, he thought it was literal dust, but in this world, Dust is a type of crystal that can emit one of the elements and Huntsman use it on mass for their fights and the world uses it to power everything. This whole concept was insane to consider but he's heard a lot of insane things during his time. After they finished talking, Taren absorbed it all.

"Alright, that's a lot to take in, but I'll manage." Taren said.

"I'm sure it is a lot to take in, especially for someone not from Remnant." The Chief said with a chuckle.

"You mentioned I could put my skills to use as a Bounty Hunter; know any places I can start?" Taren asked.

"You can try this village's tavern. Many Local Huntsman and Bounty Hunters go there for any local missions." The Chief informed. "I'm sure you can find a job that way."

"Will people ask questions?" Taren asked.

"Only if you give them a reason too." The Chief said. "But before you go, there is one thing you'll need."

The Chief reaches into his desk and pulls out a device of some sort.

"This is a Scroll, primarily it's a communication device but also has other uses." The Chief said. "If you want to blend in, you'll need this."

The Chief hands it to Taren who grabs it and inspects it. The Chief then gives him a quick tutorial on how to use the scroll, and it didn't take as long as the previous explanation. It sounded like an interesting piece of technology. Once the Chief finished the tutorial, Taren opened the scroll and the Chief helps to set it up making it ready for use. He then closed the scroll and put it away into a pouch he had on him.

"Thank you, words can't express how grateful I am for your help." Taren said.

"A thank you is more than sufficient." The Chief said. "Though I must thank you for bringing those survivors here, they probably wouldn't have survived if you hadn't helped them."

"I'd say, these Grimm sound nasty." Taren comments.

"They are, trust me" The Chief said in response to the comment. "If you ever encounter one, be careful."

Taren just nods silently before he turns around while he puts his helmet back on.

"Good luck on becoming a Bounty Hunter on Remnant." The Chief said.

Taren walks out the door and soon out of the building. Once outside, he has a look around to try and find the tavern. While he walked around the village, he noticed how people looked at him now with admiration. Must be because of the survivors he brought here. He has seen the looks before but not all the time. It's a rare sight for him to behold as the most gazes he's seen aimed at him are jealously and hatred mostly from other Bounty Hunters. He soon finds the tavern and there are people outside of it either having a drink or talking amongst themselves. He steps through the front door and inside it was lively. Patrons either drinking, talking to each other or just hanging out. He scans the room and notices some folks have weapons on them that seem to be weapons merged together. They also had colorful clothes and armor. He guessed they were either Huntsman or Bounty Hunters. Some of the taverns patrons noticed him but didn't keep looking at him for long. He then walks up to the front counter to speak to the bartender. The bartender was cleaning a glass before he noticed the Mandalorian approaching.

"Can I help you stranger?" The bartender asked.

"Looking for Bounty work." Taren answers.

"Ah I see, Bounty Board is over there." The bartender said while pointing to the bounty board. "We currently don't have a large selection but I'm sure you'll find one."

"Thank you."

Our hired gun walked over to the board, and it was a large machine with a large screen. A few Bounty Hunters stood beside it either talking to one another or looking at jobs. When he arrived, the Hunters took notice of him but paid him now mind. As he looked at the screen, there really wasn't a lot of jobs, but he just needed one to get started. He was looking for one that seemed easy enough to start with. He watched as one of the hunters swiped their fingers on the screen and it moved the jobs around. So, it was a touch screen. Good to know. He gently moved the jobs around and found one. It paid at least five hundred Lien, and the job was simple enough. Protect a man who seeks to venture into the woods to find special kind of herbs, but the only problem was that these herbs were in the wild meaning Grimm could strike. He got all this information from the job description. He then grabbed his scroll and now knew he had no idea how to acquire the job. Thankfully one hunter spotted this.

"Need some help there, stranger?" The Bounty Hunter asked.

"Never exactly worked with this machine before." Taren replied.

"Not surprised, this new piece of technology came from Atlas. From what I've heard it's almost everywhere, but most Hunters are still learning." The Bounty Hunter said. "All you need to do is insert your scroll into that slot and push the accept button underneath the job."

Taren looked at the machine and saw a slot he then nodded a silent thank you to the Bounty Hunter. He inserted his scroll into the machine and pushed the accept button that did pop up. His Scroll then beeps once before he grabs it and removed it from the machine. He opened his scroll and saw the job details.

"Taking on a beginner job huh?" The Bounty Hunter asked. "New to the job?"

"Not exactly." Taren answered. "Just seems easy enough."

"Fair enough." The Bounty Hunter said. "Well, good luck on your job. Try not to die from boredom."

The Hunter walked away before the Mandalorian looked at his scroll. It gave him a map of where he needed to go, and it was inside the village. He puts his scroll away and makes his way out of the tavern.
