Chapter 513
Julie's POV
I remained rooted to the floorboards, staring blankly at the dark wood until Steve bowed his head, stepping directly into my line of sight to block my escape.
"Julie."
I blinked, forcefully dragging my mind back from the edge of the abyss. He was staring at me with his brow furrowed not in anger, but in genuine, unadulterated astonishment.
"I'll admit, you completely derailed me," he muttered, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck as he paced half a step to the side. "I fully expected you to scream bloody murder, or storm right out that front door. I never, in a million years, anticipated you would pull him into an embrace."
"Did I do something wrong?" I murmured, my voice dropping to a fragile whisper as I stared down at my trembling fingers, curling them tight into my palms.
"No." He shook his head instantly, stepping closer. "You didn't do anything wrong, Julie. On the contrary... that was probably the right move."
