April opened her eyes to find herself on a hospital bed. Her eyes felt heavy and groggy to open, like there was an extra layer of something she wasn't aware of, attached to it. Several faces were staring at her, and for a moment, they all seemed strange and distant to her, so she shut them again. Her ears could pick excited noises.
"Finally, she's awake."
"Thank God she's alive."
"April, can you hear us?"
The voices were all familiar, yet she had difficulty placing them. She struggled to open her eyes again. This time, her vision was a bit clearer, and she could make out the people in front of her. The first face she identified was her dad.
"Dad.." she called feebly.
"April..." he had tears in his eyes and held on to her hand tightly. "I was so scared we had lost you. I made a promise to your mother to look after you guys, and I feel so sorry for breaking it."
She forced a smile, squeezing his hand back. "It's okay, dad. What's important now is that I am here, and alive."
