Ivy Tanner wanted to go upstairs to sleep when the landline suddenly rang.
After a moment's hesitation, she answered the phone. "Hello?"
A man's displeased voice came from the other end. "Why are you calling me?"
"I wasn't trying to call you. I was trying to call someone else, but none of the other numbers went through. Yours was the only one that worked, so I thought this phone could only make internal calls."
Ethan Kingsley's voice was grim. "Don't bother me again unless it's important. And don't wander around, or don't come crying to me if you get bitten by a dog."
"Dogs?" Ivy Tanner was terrified of dogs.
Ethan Kingsley sneered. "There are a lot of stray dogs in the neighborhood."
Just as he finished speaking, a cacophony of barks erupted outside, sounding like dogs fighting.
Ivy's heart leaped into her throat. She whispered, "Will... will those dogs get in here?"
"The dogs won't come in if you don't go out."
"I understand. I definitely won't go out."
"Be good."
