"That won't do. They swam over there. The moment you get in the water, you'll sink."
"How do I keep from sinking?" the child pressed, wanting to know everything.
"Learn how to swim," Cecilia Adler replied.
"Mommy, do you know how to swim?"
"I do, but I've never tried swimming to the middle of the lake." Cecilia Adler warned her to stay away from the edge, reminding her of the risk of drowning.
"But you and Daddy are here, so I'm not scared."
Ian Quincy said, "If you fall in, I'm not pulling you out..." Before he could finish his sentence, the child's foot slipped and she fell into the water.
Since she couldn't swim, she thrashed about wildly in the water.
Cecilia Adler tried to jump in and save her, but Ian Quincy pulled her back. "You can't get in the water." He stripped off his shirt and dove in to get their daughter.
Once back on the shore, the little girl was so scared she burst into tears. "WAAAH! I'm never coming here to play again!"
