Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The loser completes the task

Hinata didn't stop until she completed ten full sets of basic conditioning:

Five sets of push-ups, five of frog jumps, five of pull-ups, and five of sit-ups—followed by a final sequence of Gentle Fist forms.

This became her daily morning routine.

Even burdened with nearly three hundred pounds, Hinata never cut corners. She didn't care if her movements were slow; what mattered was form and precision. That was her rule.

After morning training, she showered, ate breakfast with her family, and then headed out to meet her teammates.

Being a genin, however, wasn't nearly as exciting as she'd imagined.

Instead of dangerous missions, they spent their days cleaning streets, finding lost pets, babysitting, or retrieving missing items.

It was monotonous—but for Hinata, that was fine.

She wasn't ready for dangerous missions yet. Staying within the safety of the village was better until she grew stronger.

At the meeting point, Kiba and Shino were already waiting.

"You're late again!" Kiba complained immediately.

Hinata's cheeks tinted pink as she fiddled with her fingers. "S-sorry…"

A swirl of smoke signaled Kurenai's arrival. She held four task scrolls in one hand.

"Today's assignments: lost wallet, missing jewelry, missing cat, and river cleanup."

"Not again…" Kiba groaned, dragging his hands down his face. "Sensei, can't we get real missions for once? It's always the same boring chores!"

Kurenai chuckled softly. "That's what genin do. Everyone starts here—it's part of the rules. Orders are orders."

Kiba sighed dramatically. "So basically, we're glorified errand boys…"

Hinata hesitated before raising her hand. "Um… Sensei, may I say something?"

Kurenai nodded. "Go ahead."

Hinata clasped her hands together nervously. "Since this is our mission for today… should we decide how to handle it ourselves?"

Kurenai tilted her head, unsure what Hinata was getting at, but nodded anyway.

Hinata took a deep breath. "Kiba, Shino—let's have a spar. If you two win, I'll do the tasks alone today. But if I win… you two can handle them."

The three of them froze.

Kiba's jaw dropped. Shino even paused mid-adjustment of his collar.

Kurenai simply blinked, speechless.

"Wait, wait!" she said quickly. "These missions are meant to be done together. Even simple tasks build teamwork and experience. Don't take them lightly."

Kiba turned toward Hinata with disbelief. "You're serious? You want to fight both of us at once?"

Hinata nodded softly.

Kiba sighed, shaking his head. "You've really been underestimating me, huh? Don't think that fight with Kurenai-sensei makes you stronger than me. You caught her off guard, that's all! Face me head-on, and you'll see the difference!"

Hinata tilted her head. "So… you're agreeing?"

"Of course!" Kiba smirked. "If it means skipping chores for a day, I'm in. Shino?"

Shino thought for a moment, then gave a curt nod. "Alright."

Kurenai sighed in defeat. "Fine. But this is just a spar. No serious injuries. Understood?"

"Got it!" Kiba said eagerly, cracking his knuckles.

Hinata and Shino nodded quietly.

"Then—begin!"

Kiba dropped onto all fours, his partner Akamaru leaping beside him.

"Let's go!"

In an instant, he lunged forward, chakra flowing into his limbs for speed and power. The two rushed Hinata in a spinning, feral charge.

Hinata's expression changed instantly—calm, sharp, focused.

"Byakugan!"

The veins around her eyes surfaced as her vision expanded. She could see their movements perfectly—the angle of attack, the chakra flow, every muscle shift.

At the last moment, she shifted her stance, turned her hands to open palms, and struck—once at Kiba's abdomen, once across Akamaru's back.

A dull thud, followed by two strangled yelps.

The pair passed her in a blur and collapsed to the ground, twitching from the precise chakra disruption.

"..."

The clearing went silent.

Kurenai exhaled slowly, a smile tugging at her lips.

So she's already integrating her Gentle Fist into live combat.

Without turning her head, Hinata could see everything around her through her Byakugan—every movement behind, beside, and ahead of her. She and Shino exchanged glances briefly before moving at the same time—Hinata surged forward, while Shino instinctively retreated.

A dense swarm of insects poured out from Shino's collar, sleeves, and trouser legs, spreading like a living black cloud.

Hinata crossed her arms over her head, chakra surging outward in all directions. Her precise strikes repelled every insect that approached her vital points—head, neck, hands, and feet. The ones crawling across her clothes were ignored; the weighted suit she wore beneath provided more than enough protection.

Realizing that a drawn-out fight would only favor Shino, Hinata decided to end it quickly. Focusing chakra into her legs, she dashed forward with explosive speed.

"Eight Trigrams! Thirty-Two Palms!"

Buzz!

A glowing Eight Trigrams Diagram spread beneath her feet, the lines pulsing with pale blue chakra. Shino found himself caught within its radius—the sudden pull of chakra restricted his movements, slowing him down as if invisible strings had bound him in place.

"Not good—!" was all he managed to say before Hinata's barrage of palm strikes landed in rapid succession.

Pa-pa-pa-pa!

Each hit landed flawlessly, sealing one chakra point after another until the final blow sent him flying several meters back. Shino hit the ground hard, rolling once before lying still. The Gentle Fist had completely sealed his chakra pathways.

Hinata dropped to her knees, breathing heavily, drenched in sweat. When Kurenai approached to help, she shook her head and waved weakly.

"I'm fine…" she murmured. With trembling legs, she forced herself upright, swaying slightly as she left the training ground.

"As agreed," she said between breaths, "today's mission is yours."

"..."

"..."

Kiba and Shino exchanged helpless looks—especially Kiba, who had been taken down in a single move. His face burned with embarrassment.

Kurenai, meanwhile, watched Hinata's retreating figure with a thoughtful expression.

Could it be… a split personality? she wondered. Shy and timid one moment, then cold and decisive in battle the next…

Once she was out of sight, Hinata's sluggish movements vanished completely. Her breathing steadied, her posture relaxed, and she began strolling leisurely through the streets.

She stopped at several food stalls, buying skewers, dumplings, and sweet buns until her hands were full.

Being a genin does have its perks, she thought contentedly. The allowance goes directly to me now.

Before, her finances were tightly managed by the clan's attendants. But now that her guards had been dismissed, she finally had her own little "treasury."

She didn't care for clothes or jewelry—food was what truly mattered.

Eating her way home, Hinata finally returned to her room, lay down on her bed, and allowed her consciousness to sink into her Homeland Space.

No more school. Every spare moment had to be used.

Kurenai might believe these low-level missions were good for genin—helpful for gaining experience—but to Hinata, such experience meant little.

What's the use of knowing how to run errands if I can't protect myself?

Strength… strength is everything.

She didn't know when the main family might decide to place the Caged Bird Seal on her. But if that day came, she refused to be powerless.

The construction in her Homeland was nearly finished—ninety-nine percent complete. She was meticulously inspecting every last detail, determined to achieve perfection for the highest possible evaluation.

"Good… perfect," she murmured, checking the blueprints twice more before beginning the final touches.
