Chapter 139 - The Ancient Whale

"The pod of colossal whales hasn't appeared for over a decade. I never thought they would gather here again."

The speaker was a local fisherman from the Land of Rivers. Shiraishi turned to ask, "What is their goal?"

The fisherman, now in his forties, looked at the whales with a complex expression. As a child, he had played with them in the surf; once, the relationship between humans and these whales was incredibly close.

That changed during the Great Ninja War when the Leaf took control of the Land of Rivers. To expand maritime trade, the Leaf's garrison commander decided to reclaim land and build massive harbors.

During this process, the resident pod became a major obstacle. Research revealed that these Ancient Whales were highly valuable; they could condense pure Water-attribute chakra to create storms and tsunamis.

Much of this chakra was concentrated in the pupils of the Ancient Whales—a literal gift from nature. A pair of "Whale Eyes" could be crafted into powerful Water-release ninja tools.

The Leaf high command, desperate for more Water-style assets at the time, orchestrated a massacre.

Facing the siege of elite ninjas, the leader of the pod stayed behind to cover the escape of its kin. It was eventually killed, its eyes gouged out, and its massive body rendered down to forge a set of armor for a Leaf shinobi.

The fisherman's face grew pale as he pointed at the dark purple whale offshore. "The leader back then had this same unique color... though it was even larger than this one."

The child of the slain leader had grown up, inherited the ancient bloodline, and awakened the full power of the ocean. Now, it had returned to lead its clan in a war of vengeance.

The Sand ninjas were struggling. Their Earth-style specialists were few, and although Shiraishi's silver sand reinforced the ramparts, it was only a matter of time before the walls collapsed under the relentless pressure.

Shiraishi acted. Using Magnet Release to lift himself, he streaked toward the pod. He fired an Origin Pulse, but the giant whale retaliated with a geyser so powerful it shattered the blue beam into a thousand radiant droplets.

A simple water spout has this much power? Shiraishi analyzed the situation behind a metallic shield of sand. These whales were no longer fighting as individuals; over the last decade, they had learned the art of coordinated warfare.

They rely on their chakra-sensitive eyes to sense one another and stay in formation. In that case...

"Black Mist Technique!"

Thick, dark fog erupted from Shiraishi, rapidly expanding across the ocean surface.

"It's here! Master Shiraishi's Black Mist!" The Sand ninjas cheered. As the fog spread, the intensity of the tsunami visibly weakened.

Within the mist, the whales felt a bone-chilling cold that disrupted their internal chakra circulation and severed their sensory links to one another.

Realizing the human above was the source, the dark purple whale unleashed massive waves. Shiraishi's hands blurred into seals, and the mist condensed into a pair of giant spectral hands to block the impact.

The purple whale's skin suddenly lit up with terrifying energy runes, its entire body glowing like a bio-luminescent power core.

In its fury, it slammed the water with such force that the resulting shockwave blew the surrounding Black Mist away entirely.

Shiraishi tested it with a few more jutsu, only to find that the creature's natural resistance made ninjutsu nearly ineffective.

If ninjutsu won't work, I'll use Taijutsu!

Shiraishi gripped his silver blade and dived vertically. The impact of his strike drew a pained roar from the beast.

Using Body Flicker, he reappeared directly on the whale's head. His blade glowed with intense light as he aimed for its brow.

The Sage's Blade sank into the whale's skull, releasing a suppressing chakra that threw the creature's mind into chaos. Screaming in rage, the whale emitted pulses of purple electricity, forming a cage of lightning.

Shiraishi used his remaining silver sand as a conductor, absorbing the current and venting it back into the whale's own body.

Blood stained the sea. Shiraishi pulled his blade and performed a whirlwind of slashes, leaving deep, jagged wounds across the creature's back.

The battle lasted through the night. The other whales, confused by the lingering mist and unable to coordinate, repeatedly collided with one another, unable to reach their leader.

By dawn, the storm subsided. On the shore, Maki remained vigilant, her eyes locked on Kisame. Kisame himself was in awe.

Black Mist Shiraishi is a monster. That whale's destructive power is easily on par with a Tailed Beast.

With a final, gargantuan effort, Shiraishi used a massive hand of silver sand to drag the exhausted, dying whale onto the beach.

Covered in his own wounds and breathing heavily, Shiraishi stood before the fallen king of the sea.

"Master Shiraishi, if we execute the leader, the rest of the pod might go into a suicidal frenzy," a Sand ninja warned. No one had the strength left to fight another wave.

"Let me try something..."

As the whale's rage cooled into a weary resignation, Shiraishi condensed a soft, blue light in his palm.

He reached out and gently touched the giant's head. Under his guidance, their chakras began to touch, seeking a bridge between human and beast.
