Chapter 4 - Shadows of power

Dominic work up early, the late morning sun illuminated the Moretti estate, he remembered the quiet breakfast he had with Bella, he went out of the estate but some thoughts didn't leave his head. Dominic was far from the peaceful serenity of his home. He sat in the backseat of a sleek black car, his demeanor cold and calculating as the vehicle sped toward the warehouse on the outskirts of the city.

In the underworld, Dominic Luciano Moretti was more than just a name. He was a force of nature, a man whose reputation for efficiency, ruthlessness, and unshakable control had cemented his place at the top of the mafia hierarchy. This morning was no exception there was business to handle, and loose ends to tie up.

The car pulled up to a nondescript industrial building. The surrounding area was desolate, the kind of place no one would think twice about avoiding. Dominic stepped out of the car, his presence commanding even in silence. His men, clad in dark suits, fell into formation around him as they entered the building.

Inside, the air was thick with tension. The large, dimly lit space echoed with the muffled sounds of footsteps and murmured voices. A man was bound to a chair in the center of the room, his face bloodied and bruised, his breathing shallow. Two of Dominic's enforcers stood on either side of him, their expressions unreadable but their postures alert.

Dominic approached with deliberate steps, his polished shoes clicking softly against the concrete floor. The room fell silent, every eye turning to him. His men knew better than to interrupt; they waited, watching as their boss assessed the situation.

The man in the chair whimpered, his swollen eyes flickering with fear as Dominic came into view. He tried to speak, but his voice was hoarse, barely audible.

"Please... I-I didn't mean to cross you. It was a mistake," the man stammered, his words spilling over each other in desperation.

Dominic didn't respond. He simply pulled a chair over and sat down in front of the man, his posture relaxed yet commanding. He reached into his jacket and retrieved a cigarette, lighting it with a practiced ease.

The silence stretched, the only sound the faint crackle of the cigarette as Dominic took a slow drag. The man in the chair squirmed, his panic mounting with each passing second.

"Mr. Moretti, I swear I didn't know the shipment belonged to you," the man pleaded. "It was a misunderstanding. I'll pay you back double, triple if you want! Just give me a chance!"

Dominic leaned back in his chair, his gray eyes locking onto the man's with an intensity that made the air feel heavier. He didn't need words to convey his message; his silence was louder than any threat.

One of his men stepped forward, handing Dominic a small folder. He opened it, revealing documents, photos, and receipts evidence of the man's betrayal. Dominic studied them with an impassive expression, then closed the folder and handed it back.

He finally stood, towering over the trembling man. With a flick of his wrist, he signaled to his enforcers.

"Wait! Please!" the man cried, his voice breaking.

Dominic didn't glance back as he walked toward the exit, his men stepping in to carry out his unspoken orders. The man's screams echoed through the warehouse, followed by a single, sharp gunshot.

Outside, the crisp autumn air greeted Dominic as he stepped back into the sunlight. He exhaled a cloud of smoke, his expression as calm as ever. This was just another day in his world a world of power, control, and calculated violence.

Meanwhile, back at the Moretti estate, Bella wandered through the halls, her curiosity leading her to explore her new home. She stumbled upon a study filled with leather-bound books and maps pinned to a large corkboard.

One map in particular caught her eye. It was marked with red circles and black Xs, along with lines connecting various cities. She frowned, her fingers hovering over the intricate markings.

"What is this?" she murmured to herself, her brow furrowing.

She didn't hear Dominic return until it was too late.

"What are you doing in here?"

His voice startled her, low and sharp. She spun around to find him standing in the doorway, his gaze piercing.

"I..I didn't mean to intrude," she stammered, her cheeks flushing. "I was just... exploring."

Dominic's eyes narrowed as he stepped into the room, his presence overwhelming. "This is my office. Stay out of it."

Bella swallowed hard, nodding quickly. "Of course. I'm sorry."

He didn't respond. Instead, he walked past her to the desk, his attention shifting to the documents spread across its surface. Bella lingered for a moment, unsure if she should leave or say something.

"I just wanted to know more about you," she finally said, her voice soft.

Dominic paused, his back to her. For a moment, it seemed like he might respond, but he simply lit another cigarette and returned to his work.

Bella took that as her cue to leave. As she closed the door behind her, she couldn't shake the feeling that Dominic's silence was as much a barrier as it was a shield.

She returned to her room thinking of ways she could get close to him.

He wasn't just a man he was a fortress, and she was on the outside looking in.
