Ethan Cross died at 4:07 a.m. on a Thursday.
He didn't know it yet.
The oak tree in front of him was the size of a small building, bark split open like a wound that went all the way to the heartwood. The old man who'd hired him—Gerard something, never caught his last name—was slumped against the roots, hand pressed to his side where dark blood seeped between his fingers.
"Don't—" Gerard's voice cracked. Wet. Rattling. "Don't let them cut it down."
Ethan's hands were slick with bark sap and something darker. He'd been trying to help. Stop the bleeding. Do something. But Gerard kept pushing him away, kept shoving Ethan's hands toward the tree instead.
"The tree doesn't need help," Ethan said. "You need help. Let me call—"
"No time." Gerard's breath hitched. His eyes—pale grey, unfocused—locked onto Ethan's. "Touch it. The wound. Now."
"That's not—"
"Now!"
The old man's hand shot out. Grabbed Ethan's wrist. Shoved it against the gash in the trunk.
The bark was warm.
(Trees aren't warm.)
(Trees don't—)
The tree pulsed.
Not wind.
Not imagination.
The whole trunk shuddered under his palm, and something cold—no, not cold, ancient—flooded up his arm, through his chest, into his skull like ice water poured directly into his brain.
Ethan's vision went white.
Sound cut out.
Gravity disappeared.
He was falling and floating and burning all at once, every nerve in his body screaming—
Then it stopped.
Silence.
His vision cleared.
Gerard was still slumped against the roots. Not moving. Eyes open but—
Empty.
Ethan's breath caught.
"Hey. Hey, stay with me—"
He pressed two fingers to Gerard's neck.
No pulse.
The old man was dead.
Had been dead for—how long? Seconds? Minutes?
Ethan's hands shook.
(Call someone.)
(911.)
(Do something—)
Words appeared.
Floating in the air.
Green text. Glowing faintly in the pre-dawn darkness.
[VERDANT SYSTEM INITIALIZED]
[Host: Ethan Cross]
[Status: Integration 0%→12%]
[LE: 89/500]
Ethan stopped breathing.
The words didn't go away.
He blinked.
Still there.
He waved his hand through them.
They moved. Shifted to the side like a holographic screen adjusting to his line of sight.
His pulse hammered.
(This isn't real.)
(Hallucination.)
(Carbon monoxide? Did I hit my head?)
He looked down at his hands.
Normal.
Dirty. Covered in sap and bark fragments and—was that blood?—but normal.
He looked at the tree.
The gash in the trunk was closing.
Not healing.
Closing.
Bark knitting together like skin, like someone had hit reverse on a video, wood fibers threading back into place until the wound was just—
Gone.
Ethan's knees buckled.
He sat down hard.
The system text stayed in his vision. Hovering. Waiting.
A new line appeared:
[⚠ WARNING: Host LE critically low]
[External LE source detected: 1]
[Recommendation: Absorb LE or risk system collapse]
[Time remaining: 4 minutes, 18 seconds]
Four minutes.
Four minutes until—what?
System collapse?
What did that even—
Ethan's chest tightened.
Not anxiety.
Something else.
Something wrong.
His heart stuttered. Skipped a beat. Skipped two.
His LE dropped:
[LE: 89→76 (-13)]
Pain spiked behind his ribs.
Sharp.
Cold.
Like something inside him was draining.
(You're dying.)
(The system is—)
(You're dying.)
His vision blurred.
He gasped. Tried to stand. Couldn't.
The text pulsed:
[External LE source detected: Gerard Moss - Deceased]
[Absorb? Y/N]
Ethan stared.
Absorb.
From Gerard.
From the corpse.
His stomach turned.
"No. No, that's—"
[LE: 76→68 (-8)]
[Time remaining: 3 minutes, 52 seconds]
Another spike of pain.
Worse this time.
His hands curled into fists. Nails digging into his palms.
(You're going to die.)
(He's already dead.)
(He wanted this. He told you to touch the tree. He knew.)
Ethan's hand moved.
Not his choice.
Not really.
He pressed his palm against Gerard's chest.
The body dissolved.
Not decomposed.
Not rotted.
Dissolved.
Into green light. Into particles. Into streamers of energy that poured into Ethan's hand like water down a drain, cold and sharp and wrong—
[+34 LE absorbed]
[Source: Gerard Moss - Verdant Rank: Seedbearer I]
[Current LE: 102/500]
[Integration: 12%→18%]
[System stabilized]
The pain vanished.
Ethan screamed.
The sound tore out of his throat, raw and ragged, echoing through the forest.
He scrambled back.
Gerard's body was gone.
Not moved.
Gone.
No corpse. No bones. No clothes.
Just a faint shimmer of green dust settling onto the leaves.
Ethan's breath came in short, sharp gasps.
(You just—)
(You killed him.)
(No. He was already dead. The system said—)
(You absorbed him.)
His hands shook.
He stared at his palms.
Still dirty. Still covered in sap.
But underneath—
Faint green lines. Threading under his skin. Pulsing slowly.
(What did you do.)
(What did you do—)
A voice cut through the panic.
Female. Calm. Coming from—everywhere?
"Integration successful. Welcome, Ethan Cross."
Ethan spun.
Nobody there.
Just trees. Just shadows. Just the massive oak standing silent behind him, bark smooth and unbroken like it had never been wounded.
"Who—"
"I am the Verdant System. You have been selected as a Host."
"Selected for what—"
"Survival."
The word hung in the air.
Ethan's throat closed.
"I didn't—I didn't ask for this."
"None of you do."
A new screen appeared. Larger. More detailed:
[SYSTEM STATUS]
Host: Ethan Cross
Age: 24
Integration Level: 18%
LE (Life Essence): 102/500
Rank: Unranked
Abilities Unlocked: None
Skills Available: 1
[WARNING: You are Seed-touched]
[Primordial Seed detected: Class-VII - RESTRICTED]
[Court jurisdiction: PENDING]
Ethan's eyes skimmed the text.
Seed-touched.
Class-VII.
Restricted.
"What does that mean."
"It means you are in danger."
The system's voice didn't change. Still calm. Still detached.
"There are two factions aware of Seed-touched individuals. The Verdant Court will attempt to regulate you. The Thornbound Covenant will attempt to harvest you."
Harvest.
Like Gerard.
Like what he'd just—
Ethan's stomach lurched.
"I don't want this. Take it out. Undo it—"
"Irreversible. Integration has begun. Rejecting the Seed will result in death within 72 hours."
Seventy-two hours.
Three days.
Ethan sat down.
His legs gave out and he just—sat. Hard. On the cold ground next to where Gerard had been.
(This isn't real.)
(This can't be—)
His phone buzzed.
The sound was so normal it almost made him laugh.
He pulled it out.
Cracked screen. Battery at 18%.
One new message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
"You have 48 hours to surrender the Seed voluntarily. After that, we take it by force. Your mother's safety depends on your cooperation. - T.C."
Ethan's blood went cold.
His mother.
Diane Cross.
They knew about her.
(How.)
(How do they—)
He tried to call her.
Straight to voicemail.
He tried again.
Voicemail.
His hands shook so hard he almost dropped the phone.
(She's fine.)
(She's at home. She's—)
Another message:
He opened it.
His mom.
Tied to a chair.
Duct tape across her mouth.
Left eye swollen shut.
Someone standing behind her. Face hidden. Holding a knife.
Ethan's vision tunneled.
The system spoke:
"Your LE is spiking. Emotional distress detected."
[LE: 102→87 (-15)]
He didn't care.
He stood.
(Where.)
(Where is she.)
(Think. Think—)
The oak tree pulsed.
Faint. Almost imperceptible.
But Ethan felt it.
A pull.
Not physical.
Deeper.
The Seed inside him responding to the tree.
He pressed his hand against the bark.
The world shifted.
Not teleportation.
Not movement.
Perception.
Suddenly Ethan could feel the forest.
Every tree within a hundred feet. Their roots. Their age. Their—
Connections.
The oak he was touching was ancient. Two hundred years old. Maybe more.
And it was aware.
Not sentient.
Not thinking.
But aware.
It knew he was there.
It knew he'd absorbed Gerard.
It—
Approved?
No.
That wasn't the right word.
It recognized him.
Like he'd been marked.
Claimed.
A new notification appeared:
[Skill Unlocked: Verdant Sight I]
[Description: Perceive life essence within 50 meters. Duration: 30 seconds. Cost: 5 LE]
Ethan pulled his hand back.
The connection severed.
He gasped.
His head spun.
(What the hell was that.)
The system didn't answer.
Ethan looked at his phone.
The image of his mom.
The message.
48 hours.
He had two days to figure out what the Seed was, who these people were, and how to save her.
Two days.
He'd never felt more alone.
The walk back to his truck took fifteen minutes.
Felt like fifteen hours.
His hands wouldn't stop shaking.
Gerard's face kept flashing in his mind. The way his body had just—dissolved. Turned into light. Into energy.
Into fuel.
Ethan's stomach turned.
(You killed him.)
(He was already dead.)
(You absorbed him.)
He reached the truck.
Old Ford Ranger. Rusted fenders. Passenger window held up with duct tape.
He got in.
Sat there.
Stared at the steering wheel.
His LE sat at 87/500.
The Seed pulsed faintly in his chest. Not painful. Just—
There.
Waiting.
Growing.
The system spoke:
"First integration phase complete. You have 14 days until second phase begins. Recommendation: increase LE reserves and unlock core abilities before Phase II."
"Or what."
"Or the Seed will consume you."
Ethan's hands tightened on the wheel.
"Great."
He started the engine.
Pulled out onto the dirt road.
The sun was rising. Orange light bleeding through the trees.
Millbrook Falls was twenty minutes south.
His apartment. His mom's house.
(She's not there.)
(They have her.)
(48 hours.)
His phone buzzed again.
He almost didn't look.
Almost.
New message. Same unknown number:
"Tick tock, Ethan."
He threw the phone onto the passenger seat.
Pressed the gas.
The Seed pulsed.
[LE: 87/500]
[Integration: 18%]
[Time until Phase II: 13 days, 22 hours]
Ethan drove.
Didn't look back.
Behind him, the ancient oak stood silent in the dawn light.
Its bark smooth.
Unbroken.
Waiting.
