Chapter 10: A long, shadowy road to the past
After moving away from the border of the Argonne, the green lands gave way to a vast, empty plain known as the "Plain of Silence. This is where they need to go through to reach the coast and then cross the sea to the Elf Continent.
π Travel and fatigue
For days, the three friends walked. Volt, as usual, tried to lighten the atmosphere by telling silly stories about their village, but Sai and Aki had their minds on the dangers that followed them.
Aki: "We must hurry. The giants of Ilbaf are moving very fast, and even if Lucifer sent another messenger, we have nowhere to hide here in this deserted plain.
π Different night: Sakuna and Sai
One night when Volt and Aki were asleep, Sai was left alone by the fire. Sakuna began to speak in a low, friendly voice.
Sakuna: "Sai... look at those stars. 9,000 years ago, when I was still the guardian of heaven, the stars shone differently. The world has changed, but betrayal is the same.
For the first time, Sai felt that Sakuna was gaining loyalty to him.
Sai: "Why were you betrayed, Sakuna?"
Sakuna: "Because I sided with the monster king. Everyone thought he was a destroyer, but he just wanted to create a new world where gods wouldn't rule over humans. And now... you, me, and that stupid boy, we're going to cross that same path."
π«οΈ Magical fog
On the fifth day of the journey, they reached an area covered with white fog. Aki paused, "Beware, this is no ordinary haze. This is 'memory haze'. Anyone who enters it will find the worst memories of their past."
Volt stepped fearlessly into the fog. Suddenly his eyes turned white. Inside his mind, he saw the sight of the sword that Lucifer stabbed in his back. The voices of thousands of monsters shouting: "Our king is dead! We have been betrayed!"
Sai fell into the fog and saw his family killed when he was a child. But Sakuna screamed inside her, "Sai! Don't blink! This is just an illusion! I'm here!"
With Sakuna's help, Sai was able to grab Volt and Aki's hands and rescue them from the fog. When they came out, Volt took a deep breath and looked at Sai.
Volt: "Sai... thank you. For a moment I felt like the whole world had its back on me, but I saw your hand."
Sai just shook his head, but thanked Sakuna inside. "I told you... you and I are friends now. Whether you want long life or not, I won't let you die in this stupid obscurity," Sakuna said with a muffled grin.
