He had never imagined that refusing to send money would lead to such consequences. Nor had he imagined that his parents would go so far.
Were things really so desperate at home?
Or had greed already swallowed all reason?
Ryan stood there for a long time, unsure of what to say. He knew one thing very clearly, though. No matter what the reasons were, this matter was handled by his family.
And it had hurt his wife.
He slowly walked over and sat beside her, his voice low and careful, as if afraid of disturbing her emotions.
"Wife… don't be angry," he said softly. "This is my family's fault. All of it. I'll send a telegram back tomorrow."
He paused, then added, "If you're worried, I'll ask for leave and go back with you immediately."
Mary didn't respond.
The silence made his heart tighten.
"Wife," he continued, his voice growing hoarse, "don't ignore me, okay? Even if you scold me, just say something."
