"Hubby," she said quickly, her voice soft but urgent. "I think... my period just started."
Ryan froze. "What?"
At once, he felt as if lightning struck him all of a sudden.
"What started?" Ryan blurted out, still caught in the moment. "Do you know how long I've been waiting for tonight?"
Mary's face flushed. "I know… but it really is my period."
Ryan fell silent.
Even if he didn't understand everything, he understood that much.
Why did it have to be today?
All the tension drained from him at once. He collapsed onto the bed beside her, breathing heavily, frustration and helplessness written all over him.
Mary quietly retrieved what she needed from her mindscape, dressed, and went to the bathroom. When she returned, she saw Ryan lying there, staring at the ceiling, looking both defeated and restless. Her heart tightened.
She hesitated only a second before climbing back onto the bed.
