Chapter 25 - Ch 25 A Monarch’s End

Within the depths of the shadow cave, Valerius stumbled backward, his void-like eyes wide with shock. ''It cannot be. I can feel the spectral chains that bound me to this purgatory... they have vanished.''

Leo let out a ragged gasp as he collapsed. The air returned to his lungs with the force of a physical blow as the flow of time snapped back into place. He sank to one knee, bracing himself against the freezing stone floor while blood leaked from his nostrils, staining the ground. ''She is... beyond terrifying,'' he managed to choke out.

'If I had lingered in her presence for even a second longer, my very soul would have vanished,' he thought, a shiver running down his spine.

Malphas moved with silent speed, his hand firmly gripping Leo's shoulder to steady him. A fierce, predatory pride flickered within his crimson gaze as he looked at his master.

''She acknowledged you,'' Valerius whispered, his voice trembling. ''You stood before the Extinction and remained whole.''

''Tell me, how does a being that powerful even fall?'' Leo asked, wiping his face with the back of his hand.

The old demon's expression turned hollow, haunted by ancient memories. " Her strength was her downfall. Her pride was a mountain that allowed no peers and sought no allies. When the world realized she could neither be shackled nor persuaded, every kingdom and every god rose to tear us down.''

Valerius began to dissolve into embers of light, a haunting, triumphant smile on his lips. "She turned the world into a graveyard before sacrificing her own life. She refused to let her existence become a prize for the victors.''

With a final, shimmering breath, he spoke one last time. ''The path is yours, young lord. Do not let her legend fade again.''

Leo forced himself to stand, his legs still heavy from the mental strain. He could still see those eyes in his mind- vast, cold, and utterly indifferent to the fate of the universe.

Leo's gaze shifted from the empty air to the ornate, Purple-iron chest that had appeared where the altar once stood. A familiar, greedy spark replaced the exhaustion in his eyes.

''Well,'' he whispered, his lips pulling back into a smirk. ''At least the loot is always worth the trauma.''

''It feels as though the cave itself is exhaling,'' Malphas remarked, his eyes darting to the shadows that were no longer aggressive.

'The master of the house is gone. Now we take our inheritance,'' Leo said. He placed his hands on the cold iron lid and heaved it open.

A soft, chime-like sound rang through the air as the rewards were revealed.

[System Notification: Legacy Chest (Epic) Unlocked]

Leo reached in and lifted a cloak that felt like liquid shadow. As it caught the light, faint silver stars seemed to twinkle within the fabric.

[Mantle of the Twilight Monarch (Relic – Fragment)]

Grade: Epic

Shadow Veil (Passive): While standing in shadows, your presence is erased from perception, even by enemies up to three ranks higher.

Twilight Authority (Passive): Enemies who attempt to sense you while Shadow Veil is active suffer distorted perception and delayed response.

Aether Regeneration: +25%

[Twilight Descent (Sealed)]

'Not bad at all. It is certainly an upgrade from this jacket,' Leo noted. He draped the cloak over his shoulders, watching as the fabric adjusted its length and width to fit his frame with tailor-made precision.

Beneath the cloak, he found a cache of high-density stones and a skill scroll that hummed with concentrated magical energy.

[Void Stones (High Grade) x50: Rare materials required for advanced spatial constructions.]

[Skill Scroll: Void Flicker (Active)]

[Grade: Rare]

[Description: Grants the ability to step through the void, reappearing at a target location within 10 meters. Cooldown: 12 seconds.]

''A Rare-rank mobility skill right out of the bat? Now we are talking,'' Leo muttered, his eyes gleaming as he clutched the scroll.

As they began their way out of the cavern, Malphas remained silent for a time before finally speaking up. ''Lord, forgive my impudence, but I fail to understand why you risked your very soul for this legacy. While such a prize is an immeasurable boon for any other lord, your own potential is limitless. Given enough time, you would surely establish a legacy that surpasses any from the ancient ages.''

Leo let out a dry chuckle. ''I am baiting a fish, Malphas.''

Malphas paused, his brow furrowing as he processed the statement. 'A fish? What manner of prey is he hunting?'

Leo caught the look of utter confusion on the Knight's face but offered no further explanation. 'Let us see if my theory holds water. If I am right about how the system reacts to these forbidden legacies...' A dark chuckle escaped him, echoing softly against the cave walls.

Steven Lockwood crouched low in the dense brush, his eyes locked on a wounded Dire Wolf limping through the clearing. He raised a hand, his fingers trembling with excitement. ''Marked,'' he whispered. A dark, jagged aura flickered around the wolf's head, visible only to him.

Instantly, Steven felt a surge of explosive power through his veins. His muscles tightened, and his heart hammered against his ribs like a drum. He did not just want to kill the beast; he felt a growing obsession to see it struggle.

'This is what I was born for,' he thought, a twisted smile spreading across his face. 'In my home world, I had to use money and influence to crush people. Here, I can do it with my own hands.'

The wolf sensed the killing intent and tried to run, but the mark above its head pulsed with a heavy, oppressive light. Its movements slowed, its wounded leg buckling under the invisible weight. Steven stepped out from the shadows, his eyes glowing with a faint, predatory hunger.

''Run all you want, little puppy,'' Steven mocked, his voice dripping with malice. ''The more you fight, the better it feels when I break you.''

He lunged from the shadows, his blade carving a deep red line across the wolf's flank. With every drop of blood that spilled, Steven felt his strength double.

He didn't stop until the creature was a mangled mess beneath him. Panting, he wiped the spray of blood from his cheek and laughed.

[Rank F: 80 percent]

''Damn! Look at that progress,'' Steven shouted into the empty woods. 'At this rate, the other young Lords won't even see me coming.'

Steven walked back toward his territory, his boots heavy on the dirt path. The wooden walls of his outpost were still rough and unfinished, but the atmosphere inside was already thick with fear. As he entered through the shield, the peasants and low-level scouts he had collected stopped their work. They shivered as he passed, none of them daring to make eye contact. He liked it that way. To him, they were just tools, and a tool worked best when it feared being broken.

In the center of his territory, a voluptuous succubus was waiting for him, her face gleaming with mischief. ''Did you complete your hunt, my lord?''

Steven glanced at her, a muscle in his jaw twitching. 'I thought my luck was damn good when I got a fucking rare grade, but it had to be a succubus, who is only good for the bed or seducing others.'

"Don't just stand there looking pretty,'' Steven snapped, dismissively waving a hand toward the treeline. " Continue scouting the perimeter. I need high-value targets to refine my talent, not local pests. Don't come back until you've found something worth my time.''

Without waiting for a response, he strode past her into the darkness of his hall. The succubus maintained her deep, respectful bow until the sound of his footsteps faded. As she straightened, a sharp, derisive snicker escaped her lips.

'Look at him satisfying his fragile ego,' she thought, her eyes flashing with a predatory light that Steven was too arrogant to notice. 'Such a fragile little weakling, playing at being a king. Let him pretend for now.'
