Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 – Crimson Sunset

After watching Hirota Masami drive into the warehouse section of an abandoned factory, Shimizu Koji waited until he heard the car door shut. Only then did he pull over to the roadside, step out, and follow quietly.

By sheer coincidence, the "borrowed" car contained a scarf, a hat, and a lightweight mask—everything needed to conceal his face. Koji didn't hesitate to make use of them.

He didn't know who the mastermind behind this was. But judging by how efficiently the other two robbers had been eliminated, even if they weren't terrorists, they were unquestionably professionals.

Masami's red sedan was parked in front of one of the warehouses. The car was empty.

Koji's heart tightened.

After confirming there were no signs of surveillance nearby, he moved quickly to the warehouse entrance and cautiously peered inside.

"Well done, Hirota Masami."

A man dressed entirely in black stepped out from the shadows.

"Oh—perhaps I should call you Miyano Akemi instead."

Gin's eyes were filled with mockery, the corner of his mouth slightly raised. He didn't seem the least bit threatened by the gun Akemi was holding.

Beside him stood a large, burly man in a black suit and round black hat—clearly his subordinate.

The two had appeared only after Akemi had walked deep into the warehouse. From Koji's position, the figures closest to him were their backs.

He didn't act rashly.

The warehouse was so quiet that even a pin dropping would be deafening. The blond man in black gave off an overwhelming presence—and he was armed.

"I have a question," Akemi said coldly."Why did you kill the other two?"

"That's just how we do things," Gin replied with a sneer."Now hand over the money."

As if she had expected this, Akemi's expression didn't change.

"The money isn't with me. I hid it somewhere else."

"What?!" Vodka blurted out.

Gin frowned slightly.

Before he could speak, Akemi pressed on urgently.

"Where is my sister? Bring her here first—that was our deal! As long as—"

Her voice grew more desperate with each word.

"Enough."

Gin interrupted her with a cold snort.

"That won't be possible. Your sister is a rare talent. She's nothing like you. The organization needs her mind."

Then his gaze sharpened.

"And Miyano Akemi… you've been dishonest. You even brought backup. Or perhaps you've finally learned something."

Akemi froze.

When she looked up again, the dark barrel of a gun was already aimed at her.

At the warehouse entrance, Koji's mind blanked for an instant.

Then—

His ears caught an approaching sound.

He turned.

Conan came rushing in on a skateboard, his face pale with urgency.

Damn it.

Koji's thoughts spiraled into chaos.

Before, he could have waited for the right moment—or at least drawn their attention away. But now—

"I didn't bring anyone!" Akemi shouted."And Gin, if you kill me, you'll never know where the money is!"

"Heh." Gin scoffed. "I take it back. You're just as naïve as ever."

"Miss Masami!!!"

Conan's shout echoed through the warehouse.

Akemi stiffened, turning instinctively toward the entrance—

Bang.

Gin fired.

Akemi collapsed as blood blossomed across her chest.

In the same instant, Gin twisted sharply, raising his elbow just in time to block a powerful kick aimed at the back of his head.

"Who are you?!" Gin demanded.

The masked figure before him was fully covered—hat, scarf, mask.

He hadn't fired immediately because Koji's kick had numbed his entire right arm.

"Boss?!" Vodka exclaimed.

"I'm fine."

"Miss Masami?!!"

At the entrance, Conan stood frozen in shock.

Seeing it was just a child, Gin and Vodka shifted their focus back to Koji.

Gin rolled his shoulder slowly, murderous intent flickering in his eyes.

Vodka raised his gun and stepped protectively in front of him. Conan tried to rush in—but had no choice but to retreat outside, just as Koji had earlier.

"Wait."

Gin suddenly raised a hand, stopping Vodka.

His eyes gleamed with cold realization as he stared at Koji.

"So that's it… hiding your face like this.""Rye—didn't expect you to come back."

He smirked, his arm fully recovered.

Exceptional close-combat skills. Similar build. Tied to Miyano Akemi. Concealing his identity.

Heh.

"No gun?" Gin mocked."I see. You came privately for this woman? How surprising. Even an undercover agent can grow attached, huh?"

Vodka finally understood.

An undercover agent.

The one Gin had been obsessed with.

"Then die together with her!"

Gin's pupils shrank to pinpoints as he pulled the trigger.

"What?!""What?!""What?!"

At ten meters, guns were fast—and deadly.

But what no one expected was this—

The masked man simply tilted his head.

The bullet missed.

The fiery glow of the setting sun streamed through a hole in the warehouse roof. Koji lifted his gaze slightly.

His eyes—

Once clear—

Were now blood-red.

And within that crimson glow, barely visible, a black magatama rotated slowly.

Gin paused for a fraction of a second.

"You've gotten stronger," he admitted coolly."But this ends here."

He fired three more times in rapid succession.

Koji felt an unprecedented calm.

He didn't know what had happened to his eyes—only that the gun no longer felt like a fatal threat.

He sidestepped. Rolled. Closed the distance.

The bullets were still dangerous—but manageable.

Vodka and Conan could only stare, dumbfounded.

Koji, however, was focused on Akemi.

If his eyes weren't deceiving him, Conan's shout had caused just enough deviation. The shot hadn't pierced her heart.

She might still live.

As for the two men before him—they had clearly mistaken his identity.

Koji had no intention of correcting them.

"Pathetic," Gin sneered."Like a sewer rat, Rye—bang!"

Eleven.

Koji counted silently as he ducked and slid behind a stack of crates.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Fourteen.

Most handguns held fewer than twenty rounds. That much, Koji knew.

Gin's obsession bordered on madness. He was used to overwhelming targets with sheer firepower.

Bang.Fifteen.

That's enough.

Even if a few bullets remained, dodging them head-on wouldn't be difficult. To Koji now, bullet trajectories looked almost childish—simple lines.

I'm betting your gun is empty.

Koji rolled forward—

Then launched himself like a panther striking prey, surging toward Gin in a flash of lightning.
