Chapter 4 - Part 3 - Under the same roof

The girl's legs stopped without warning.

Her body refused to answer her, and a sharp cold ran through her bones, immobilizing her like a sudden pause in a symphony.

"We weren't… forced to… kill them… " she looked at the ground with lifeless eyes.

His step was heavy, punctuated like a martial beat.

He calmly loaded the weapon, then pointed it at the girl's forehead.

"A dog must always follow his master's orders."

He smiled with a melancholy grin. " But it's not the first time you've failed to complete one of my- "

Crash! A vase shattered against his face, exploding into a thousand fragments.

"IF I WERE THE MOTHER, I WOULD BE SO ASHAMED TO BE WITH SOMEONE LIKE YOU!" shouted Mr. Tibia wet by the water, while shards of ceramic fell like notes from a score.

The man turned toward the pile of bones and grabbed it tightly tried to break it.

In vain.

The bone fragments separated and reassembled, following an invisible order, like a score made on the spot.

The undead revealed itself to be something more than a mere body: it was a living, seemingly immortal, musical structure.

In shock, the girl finally managed to move her foot.

Hamlet took advantage reaching Diaz's body; she took a deep breath and sank his teeth into the mortal wound.

A medieval melody, played by ancient violins, began to vibrate in the viper's fangs and the venom was injected in time.

Diaz's blood began to dry.

The wound left by the bullet became less and less visible, as if the wound were listening to that music and deciding to close itself.

Mr. Tibia realized there was no more time.

He had to find a way out. He didn't know how much longer he could hold out.

" A life without you is going to be dark beccause of you. " it cried as various cracks began to form in the surrounding ground.

As if summoned by a distant note, Diaz leaped up.

He tied Hamlet around his neck, like a ritual scarf, grabbed the girl's hand, still paralyzed by fear, and dragged her with him.

They leaped out the kitchen window landed on the dinghy on which Mr. Tibia had earlier taken the rival gang.

The engine started and they headed under the terrace.

The snake sang one of its hymns that allowed Mr. Tibia to voluntarily launch himself from the terrace, in an almost sleeping pose, landing precisely on the thieves who were just waking up from loud noises.

They were ready to go but the truth hit them:

they were out of gas.

The girl, as soon as she recovered, instinctively returned to her position. Her fist began to emit little invisible flames, ready to strike Diaz from behind and the fragile tub they were standing on.

" Think carefully, damsel. "

Hamlet whispered.

" I see no evil intentions in you… but what you seek is unattainable as you are now. "

The snake's head slowly turned toward the girl.

In its eyes, she saw all her fears materialize, like amplified echoes.

Tears began to fall, one after another, wetting her still-outstretched fist.

Was she truly ready to kill the people who saved her ?

She slapped her own face hard, then began to hit the dinghy with a flurry of punches.

The boat transformed into an homemade trampoline, bouncing Diaz off it.

Thanks to those leaps, the boy gained a wider view.

He noticed the father's shuttle.

He landed, grabbed the still-stunned skeleton's ankle, and lifted him as high as he could.

With a sharp movement, he hurled him like a living slingshot, sending all but one of the pieces toward the ship.

Diaz smiled at the girl with the most pure face he could do an instant before the fragment of Mr. Tibia dragged him out to sea.

The woman was left alone.

Aware of her own guilt, but relieved to have helped those she would remember as the most incomprehensible people she had ever met.

From the balcony, her father's gaze observed her, full of disappointment.
