Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 - "Drift"

# Chapter 9

____

The library had become their place.

Third floor, northeast corner. The table by the window that no one else seemed to want. Max would arrive first, usually. Set his books down. Wait.

Aiko would show up ten minutes later. Always exactly ten minutes. Never early, never late.

"Sorry," she'd say, even though she wasn't late.

"It's fine," he'd reply, even though he'd been watching the entrance.

They'd been meeting three times a week for months now. Sometimes more.

Max's Japanese had improved. Not fluent, but functional. He could navigate conversations, understand his lectures mostly. Read kanji he never thought he'd recognize.

Aiko's English had gotten sharper. Her pronunciation still carried her accent, but her vocabulary had expanded. She barely hesitated anymore when forming sentences.

"The essay structure is wrong," she said one afternoon, pointing at his paper. They'd moved past just language. Now she helped him with his coursework too. "Your argument jumps. See? You need transition here."

Max looked at where she was pointing. "Like what?"

"Furthermore. However. These words connect ideas."

"Right."

She wrote an example in the margin. Her handwriting was still precise. He'd started recognizing it immediately.

At cafés, she ordered for both of them now. Knew he took his coffee black. That he didn't like anything too sweet.

He'd noticed last week she'd cut her hair shorter. Didn't mention it at first. Then finally: "Your hair's different."

She'd touched it self-consciously. "You noticed?"

"Yeah."

"Good different or bad different?"

"Good."

She'd smiled. Small. Private.

In class, Max had become aware of other students watching them. The way they sat together. Left together. Came back from lunch together.

A few guys would stare at Max when Aiko wasn't looking. Not hostile, exactly. But not friendly either.

Some girls would whisper when Aiko passed. He couldn't hear what they said. Didn't need to.

One morning, Hirata announced study groups for the semester project. Randomly assigned. Five students per group.

Max's name was called with four others. None of them Aiko.

She was in a different group. Across the room.

Their eyes met briefly. She gave a small shrug. These things happened.

His group had three Japanese students and one other international student. A girl named Keiko. Quiet. Serious about her grades.

The first group meeting, Keiko sat next to Max.

"Your Japanese is good," she said.

"Not really."

"Better than most international students."

"I've had help."

"From Yamamoto-san?"

Max nodded.

Keiko looked at her notebook. "She's smart. You're lucky."

The project was comparative culture analysis. Heavy on reading, heavier on writing. In English and Japanese both.

Keiko struggled with the English portions. Her grammar was stiff. Formal. She'd translate too literally and the meaning would get lost.

After the second meeting, she approached Max.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Sure."

"Would you be willing to help me? With the English writing?" She looked uncomfortable asking. "I can pay you. For tutoring."

"You don't need to pay me."

"But your time—"

"It's fine. We're in the same group anyway."

She looked relieved. "Thank you. When are you free?"

"Most afternoons. Or weekends."

"This weekend?"

Max hesitated. This weekend—

Aiko had mentioned something. A few days ago. In the café.

"I'm having people over Saturday," she'd said. Casual. Not quite looking at him. "Just some friends. Small thing. You should come."

"To your place?"

"If you want."

She'd stirred her coffee. Waited.

"Yeah," Max had said. "Okay."

Her expression had shifted. Pleased. "Good."

But now Keiko was standing in front of him, waiting for an answer.

"This weekend works," Max said.

"Saturday? Maybe afternoon?"

"Sure."

"Thank you so much." Keiko bowed slightly. "I'll message you details."

That evening, Max sent Aiko a message.

*Hey, can't make it Saturday. Have to help someone from my study group with English. Sorry.*

She replied an hour later.

*No problem. Another time.*

Short. Polite.

Max stared at the message. Something felt off about it. But he couldn't tell what.

The party was already going when Aiko's friend Yuki arrived.

"Sorry I'm late!" Yuki kicked off her shoes at the entrance. "Traffic was insane."

Aiko's apartment was small but tidy. About ten people scattered between the living room and kitchen. Music playing. Snacks on the counter.

"You made it." Aiko smiled. Handed her a drink.

"Where's the British guy?" Yuki looked around. "Max, right?"

Aiko's smile flickered. "He couldn't come."

"What? Why not?"

"He's busy."

"Busy?" Yuki's voice rose slightly. Other people were listening now. "I thought you two were like... a thing."

"We're not a thing."

"But you're together all the time."

"We study together."

Another friend—Hiro—laughed from the couch. "Just studying? Sure."

Aiko took a sip of her drink. "That's all it is."

"You invited him though, right?" Yuki pressed. "To tonight?"

"Yes."

"And he said no?"

Aiko's jaw tightened. "He has to help someone. From his study group."

"Oh." Yuki exchanged a glance with Hiro. "A girl?"

"I don't know."

"It's probably a girl."

"Does it matter?"

"You tell me." Yuki sat down on the arm of the couch. "Does it?"

Aiko set her drink down on the counter. "Can we talk about something else?"

"You like him." This from Hiro. Matter-of-fact.

"I don't—"

"You obviously like him. Everyone can see it."

"We're friends."

"Friends." Yuki laughed. "Right. Friends who study together every day. Who get coffee together. Who—"

"We're helping each other," Aiko cut her off. "He helps me with English. I help him with Japanese. That's it."

"And he ditched your party to help some other girl with English."

The words hung there.

Aiko's expression changed. Something sharp moved across her face.

"He didn't ditch. He had a commitment."

"To someone else." Yuki wasn't letting it go. "Instead of you."

"It's not like that."

"What's it like then?"

Aiko picked up her drink again. Didn't answer.

Hiro leaned forward. "Did you think tonight was going to be... different? Like, did you think he'd—"

"No." Aiko's voice was flat. "I just invited him. As a friend."

"But you wanted him to come."

"I invite lots of people."

"Not lots of people. Him specifically." Yuki's tone had shifted. Less teasing now. More pointed. "You got dressed up. Did your hair. You never do that for these things."

Aiko touched her hair automatically. Stopped herself.

"I didn't dress up."

"You did."

Someone changed the music. The conversation around them continued. But their corner had gone quiet.

Aiko stared at her drink.

"He's using you," Yuki said quietly.

"What?"

"For help. With Japanese. With his classes. You're doing all this work for him and he can't even show up to one party."

"He's not using me."

"He's spending his Saturday helping someone else learn English. Something you're already helping him with by teaching him Japanese. Don't you see that?"

Aiko's hands tightened around her glass.

"I'm going to get more ice," she said.

She walked to the kitchen. Set her glass down on the counter. Gripped the edge.

Behind her, she could hear Yuki and Hiro talking. Softer now. She caught fragments.

"—too nice to him—"

"—obviously doesn't see it—"

"—waste of her time—"

Aiko closed her eyes.

Breathed slowly.

She wasn't upset. She wasn't.

It was fine. He was busy. People got busy.

It meant nothing.

She opened her eyes. Looked at her reflection in the kitchen window.

Her jaw was clenched. Her expression tight.

Angry.

She was angry.

The realization settled over her like cold water.

Behind her, the party continued. Laughter. Music. Friends.

Aiko stood alone in her kitchen, staring at her own reflection.

And felt something shift inside her chest.

Something that had been soft turning hard.
