Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: Obsidian Vein ( Bonus Chapter )

30 Power Stones :>

….

Sun dipped below jagged horizon while casting long and violet shadows across frozen landscape. Cold wind howled through ruins of Fist. It carried scent of ancient ice and rotting flesh. Men worked in silence. Their breath came in white clouds that vanished into gathering dark.

[Status Alert: Environmental Hazard - Supernatural Winter]

[Warning: Stamina recovery reduced by 50 percent]

Robert Baratheon stood atop southern rampart. He had discarded his heavy cloak to swing a pickaxe against frozen earth. King was a man possessed. He refused to sit in a tent while his soldiers labored.

"Dig deeper!" Robert roared. His voice cracked through frigid air. "I want trenches wide enough to swallow a giant! I want spikes sharp enough to pierce soul of Great Other!"

Ned Stark stood near center of summit. He watched treeline with eyes that had seen too much war. His hand rested on pommel of Ice. "Robert, men are reaching their limit. They have marched through blizzards for days. If we push them more, they will not have strength to hold a shield when night falls."

"They will find strength, Ned," Robert replied while wiping sweat from his brow. It froze instantly on his skin. "Death is a great motivator."

Link ignored shouting of kings. He was focused on a faint blue pulse in his vision. System was vibrating. It was guiding him toward a cluster of grey stones near northern edge of hill.

[Quest Objective: Locate Dragon glass Cache]

[Distance: 15 meters]

[Note: High concentration of magical residue detected below surface]

Link knelt in snow. He brushed away layers of frost until he reached solid rock. He drew his blackened blade. Steel glowed with low orange light that hissed against ice. He drove point of sword into a narrow crack between stones.

"Need a hand, guard?" Jaime Lannister asked. Golden knight approached with a torch. He looked leaner now. Hunger and cold had stripped away arrogance of King's Landing. Only a soldier remained.

"Bring torch closer," Link said.

Link pried stone loose. Beneath was not dirt, but a hollow space. He reached into dark and pulled out a heavy bundle of rotted leather. It disintegrated in his hands. Thousands of black glass shards spilled onto snow. They glinted like dark diamonds in torchlight.

[Reward: 2,000 Experience Points]

[New Skill Unlocked: Master of Obsidian - You can now enhance friendly weapons within 10 meters]

"Dragonglass," Jaime whispered. He picked up a jagged dagger of volcanic stone. "It looks like nothing. Just brittle glass."

"It is only thing that matters," Link said. He stood up and signaled to Ned. "Lord Stark! We found it! Tell smiths to start binding these to spear tips and arrows. Every man must have at least one piece of obsidian before midnight."

Ned hurried over. He looked at pile of black glass with a sense of awe. "First Men used these. Songs say they were gifts from Children of Forest."

"Songs were right," Link replied.

Suddenly, System map flashed a violent red. Circle of dots around base of hill began to move. They were no longer circling. They were ascending.

[Combat Alert: Siege of Fist has begun]

[Enemy Count: 10,000 plus]

[Estimated Time to Impact: 10 minutes]

A horn sounded from forest below. It was a single note. It was high and shrill. It was sound of a world ending.

"They are here!" Jon Snow shouted from watchtower.

Dead emerged from treeline in a single wave. They were not screaming. They moved in absolute silence. Only sound was crunch of snow and clattering of bone. Thousand of blue eyes illuminated dark like a sea of malevolent stars.

Robert Baratheon stepped to edge of hill. He raised his warhammer. "Finally! Let them come! Let them see what happens when they face Fury of Stag!"

Link felt cold reach deep into his marrow. He raised his sword. Orange glow of steel met blue light of dead.

"Form lines!" Link commanded. His voice was steady despite terror in his chest. "Wait for signal! Let them climb!"

First wights hit trenches. They fell onto wooden spikes but kept moving. They used bodies of their fallen to build a bridge of flesh. They were a tide of winter. Nothing could stop them except fire and glass.

[Status: Level 19 reached]

[Buff Active: King's Champion - All allies gain 10 percent Attack Power]

Link looked at Robert. He looked at Ned. He looked at Jaime. They were all that stood between living and eternal night.
