As Tom and the others raced back toward Luffy and the group on the sand sled, Vivi asked Tom how he planned to bring back the prey.
Tom had already thought about this. He intended to use some bait to lure the prey all the way back, which would save a lot of trouble.
Night had begun to fall. The temperature had dropped significantly compared to earlier. Waves of cold wind blew, bringing a slight chill.
After traveling back for a while, Tom spotted several birds lying in the sand not far away. He asked Vivi to stop the sled.
Hurrying over to the birds collapsed in the desert, Tom saw that they were all on the verge of death. Their feathers were grayish-white, they had long, pointed beaks, and crests like curly hair on their heads.
"I was worried about finding bait, but this works out perfectly."
Without a second thought, Tom happily grabbed all the seemingly dying birds. Then he realized that these birds were actually full of energy. As he grabbed them, they flapped their wings and squawked loudly—nothing like the dying creatures they had appeared to be.
Vivi saw Tom run over to the birds. When she recognized what kind of birds they were, she tried to warn him, but Tom had already grabbed them all and come back. Her jaw dropped.
Those birds were called Liar Birds. They specialized in deceiving desert travelers by pretending to be injured, then stealing their luggage while people tried to help them.
Simply put, these Liar Birds were con artists.
Unfortunately for them, they had run into Tom. When he saw birds that looked like they were about to die, he felt no pity whatsoever. Instead, he efficiently grabbed them all to use as bait.
"Didn't you think about helping them when you saw how badly injured they looked?"
Rasa looked at Tom in surprise. Earlier, when Tom had run off to help defeat the pirates attacking the village, even though his blood-red eyes looked eerie, his actions didn't seem cold-blooded at all. So why was he being so heartless now?
"I'm not a doctor. If they're really badly injured, I can't save them anyway. I might as well catch them first."
Tom, carrying the Liar Birds, said to Rasa. "No matter what condition prey is in, whether to catch them is my decision."
Next, Tom efficiently bled the Liar Birds. Although the temperature in the desert at night was low, and many large creatures wouldn't come out to hunt, giving them a little stimulation could still lure them out.
Sure enough, as Tom was bleeding the fourth Liar Bird, several large lizards smelling the blood emerged from the sand. Their massive bodies were as big as small dunes.
But Tom still wasn't satisfied. If they were having a party tonight, these wouldn't even be enough to get stuck in Luffy's teeth.
"They're crawling this way! Let's go!"
Rasa and Sabba's faces turned pale when they saw several giant lizards chasing them.
"Don't rush back yet. Let's circle around this area first."
Tom jumped onto the sand sled and said to Vivi.
"Why?"
"Right! If they surround us, we'll be in danger!"
Vivi and Rasa didn't understand Tom's intentions. Couldn't he see that those giant lizards were drooling, looking like they wanted to swallow them alive?
"Don't worry. Just do as I say."
Tom stood on the sled, watching the giant lizards rapidly close in. "Prey that's too eager to hunt often doesn't realize that they've also been targeted."
"I think I understand what you mean."
Vivi steered the sled forward and said to Tom. "You're saying there might be other creatures that see those giant lizards as their prey?"
"Close, but you got one thing wrong."
Tom spoke. "It's not 'might.' Those giant lizards are definitely the prey of some creatures. They're not at the top of the food chain. Being hunted is completely normal."
Just as Tom said, while they were leading the giant lizards in circles, several thick, long snakes emerged from the other side. They had sharp horns above their eyes. Like the giant lizards, they were yellowish-brown, making it easy for them to hide in the desert while hunting.
"Those are highly venomous horned vipers!"
Rasa saw that behind the giant lizards chasing them, several horned vipers nearly fifteen meters long had appeared. The long, sharp fangs they revealed when opening their mouths were dark purple. The venom dripping from those fangs raised purple mist as soon as it hit the sand, showing how toxic it was.
It was clear that these horned vipers were smarter than the giant lizards. When they came up from behind to surround the lizards, they split into left, center, and right paths, cutting off all escape routes and leaving the lizards nowhere to run.
"That's enough. Let's head back."
Tom watched the giant lizards being chased toward them by the thick horned vipers. Feeling it was about right, he said to Vivi.
Back at the camp, just as it was getting completely dark, Luffy and the others saw Tom and the others returning.
But it seemed there was a large group of creatures following behind Tom. As they got closer, Luffy and the others could feel the ground shaking like an earthquake.
"Look! They brought back so much food!"
Luffy held down his straw hat, watching the large group of creatures. He swallowed and said excitedly.
"Why did they attract so many?"
Nami had just finished mending Tom's robe. She hadn't expected him to come back leading such a large group—at least several dozen creatures.
"Those snakes are huge! Usopp, what do we do? Should we hide?"
"Chopper, don't be scared by such a small scene! Now's the time to show our manly courage!"
Chopper and Usopp backed away as they spoke. Seeing the creatures chasing Tom, each as big as a small hill, they immediately hugged each other in fear.
"Listen, Chopper. We'll dig holes in the sand to hide so they can't see us. Then we'll figure out how to deal with them."
"I see! I have horns, so I can dig fast!"
As Usopp said this, Chopper had already started digging.
"What are they doing?"
Zoro, who had been sleeping comfortably on the carrier crab, woke up to see Chopper, in his heavy point form, frantically digging with his antlers while Usopp cheered him on.
"With just those ingredients, the food options look limited. But for Nami-san and Vivi-san, I'll make a delicious and plentiful feast!"
Sanji took a drag from his cigarette, looking full of energy.
As for the Barubaru Sand Bandits, seeing those giant creatures charging toward them, their faces turned ashen.
"Why did you have to hit that lizard?"
"If you hadn't, we wouldn't have almost gotten eaten!"
"Those creatures have grudges, you know!"
"I didn't expect their burrow to be so close by. And that lizard I injured turned out to be their leader, so that's why this happened."
Tom said honestly. "When all those creatures came out of the ground at once, your expressions were priceless. Hahahaha!"
"Don't laugh! Thank goodness we're all okay. If we'd gotten eaten, what then?"
Nami said, annoyed that Tom was still so carefree.
"Then we'd turn into poop. Isn't that obvious?"
As soon as Tom finished speaking, Nami said to him, "Don't say such disgusting things!"
"You're right. We still have a party to hold."
Tom dropped the subject.
Rasa, watching from the sand sled, glanced at Nami and Tom. That guy is really crude. But that princess can actually put up with him.
"Everyone, time to work!"
Tom waved to Luffy and the others.
"Yeah! Take them down, and we can have a huge party!"
Luffy charged out first, rubbing his hands together eagerly. Zoro and Sanji followed close behind.
"Tom, you did great! With this much food, I don't have to worry."
"Too bad there's no alcohol. If we had wine, it'd be perfect."
Sanji and Zoro said casually as they charged into the oncoming snakes and lizards.
"Alright, watch my moves!"
Tom put on the robe Nami handed him, turned around, and was about to have some fun with the snakes and lizards when he saw that the creatures, which had been full of energy moments ago, were now lying sprawled in the desert, dead as doornails. His eyes nearly popped out. "You guys are way too fast!"
"They're a bunch of monsters."
"I've never seen anyone take down such dangerous creatures so easily."
The Barubaru Sand Bandits had been ready to fight for their lives when so many giant snakes and lizards charged at them. But in no time, what they thought was a life-threatening situation was resolved by Luffy and the others in an instant.
They all stood there stunned, feeling like they were dreaming.
"Let's party! Everyone, get ready to belly dance!"
Luffy raised both arms excitedly and shouted.
"No, you dance by yourself."
Tom, Zoro, and Sanji waved their hands at Luffy in unison.
"I will! I will! I'll dance with you!"
"This is something I have to join! You probably don't know this, but the man who was praised by countless people as the King of Dance is me!"
Chopper and Usopp supported Luffy, deciding to dance with him during the party.
Sanji was using cooking tools taken from the Barubaru Sand Bandits' ship, and they worked well for him.
Sanji quickly got into his chef mode. Under the astonished gazes of the sand bandits, he effortlessly divided the whole ingredients into equal portions. They were dazzled by the way he wielded his knife—they couldn't even tell where he was cutting.
Even though Sanji's knife skills as a chef were impressive, he still refused to use his hands in battle.
As Sanji showed off his culinary skills, he asked Ace to help light the fire. Zoro yawned repeatedly, ready to go back to sleep.
Miss Goldenweek, sitting on the carrier crab, was drawing something by firelight, her head buried in her work.
"Why did it take so long? Did something happen?"
Nami came over to Tom. She noticed his right hand was red, as if burned.
"Nothing major. We took a detour and ran into a little trouble, but it's all handled."
Tom saw there was nothing he needed to help with, so he walked over to the carrier crab and sat down against its leg.
"Are you tired?"
Nami noticed Tom rarely showed signs of fatigue and sat down next to him.
"A little. I have something to do later, so I wanted to rest a bit."
Tom looked up at the sky. In the night, stars twinkled. In the desert night, even the stars seemed especially clear.
Cold wind blew from time to time. The temperature had dropped from over fifty degrees during the day to nearly six degrees below zero. Such a huge temperature difference was hard to get used to.
But Chopper was full of energy, playing happily. During the day, he couldn't handle the scorching heat and hadn't been in good shape. But at night, with the temperature lower, for someone born on a winter island, this was actually comfortable.
Usopp played with Luffy for a while but soon got too cold. He unceremoniously hugged Chopper, saying he wanted to warm himself with Chopper's warm fur. But with Usopp hugging him, how could Chopper play happily?
So Chopper naturally refused Usopp's request. But after only a few exchanges between Chopper and Usopp, Luffy, who loved a good commotion, joined in and hugged Chopper along with Usopp, rubbing against him.
In the end, Chopper couldn't take it anymore. He transformed into his heavy point form, resembling a gorilla, and broke free from Luffy and Usopp.
But Luffy and Usopp, seeing Chopper transform from a cute little guy into a burly giant, immediately shouted in unison, "The monster came out!"
"Who are you calling a monster?!"
Chopper immediately started wrestling with Luffy and Usopp.
On the other side of the bonfire, Vivi and Rasa sat together. Their relationship seemed to have improved—at least Rasa was no longer deliberately targeting Vivi.
"I never imagined, Princess Vivi, that you would be with a group of pirates like this."
Rasa glanced at Luffy and the others play-fighting and said to Vivi.
"I never imagined things would turn out this way either. But with them, I know I can give this country a new beginning."
Vivi saw many of the Barubaru Sand Bandits helping Sanji as kitchen assistants. It seemed the party would start soon. She smiled at Rasa. "Believe me. Everyone will be able to live happily from now on. It won't be like this anymore."
"That guy said he'd show us a miracle that turns despair into hope tonight. But he's not doing anything."
Rasa remembered Tom's earlier words. Seeing him just sitting there resting, she said to Vivi with a hint of doubt.
"The time probably isn't right yet. He's not a liar."
Vivi was also curious about what Tom was planning.
The Barubaru Sand Bandits stared at the delicious food laid out before them, smelling the tempting aromas. Especially the meat that looked tender and juicy—they could barely stop themselves from shoving it all into their mouths.
Just as the sand bandits were drooling over the food, Luffy ran over and stretched out his arm to grab a piece of meat. He shoved it into his mouth and chewed.
Sanji's face darkened. He kicked Luffy, who was still licking his lips and savoring the taste, flying.
Seeing how fierce Sanji was, kicking the food thief away without hesitation, the sand bandits dared not make a move. They forced themselves to endure, swallowing hard as they stared at the aromatic food.
After some time, the crescent moon hung high in the sky. Even the windblown sand seemed gentler under the soft moonlight.
"Sanji, is it really ready?"
Luffy asked Sanji to confirm. Seeing Sanji nod, he immediately became excited. "Everyone, let the revelry begin!"
The Barubaru Sand Bandits responded with enthusiasm. They hadn't even had enough to eat in recent years, let alone held a party. Now that they had a chance to eat their fill, why would they hold back?
It was no surprise. Though the sand bandits weren't particularly strong, being born in the desert gave them a boldness that ordinary people lacked. They got along well with Luffy and quickly dug into the food.
"Should we go eat too?"
Nami had been sitting beside Tom the whole time. Neither had spoken much, just sitting quietly, letting the breeze wash over them.
When Tom and Nami went to get food, Sanji came over with two plates of what looked like perfectly prepared dishes. "Nami-san, try the snake soup I made especially for you."
"Stinky fisherman, yours is over there. Get it yourself."
After handing one bowl of snake soup to Nami, Sanji said to Tom, then ran off toward Vivi with hearts in his eyes. "Vivi-san, I prepared this specially for you. You must try it."
"That pervert cook is way too biased against men."
Tom spoke his true thoughts quite bluntly. Just as he was about to eat, Sanji ran over again, snatched the bowl from his hand, and quickly ran off. "Beautiful Miss Rasa, would you like to try some too?"
Seeing his food taken away like that, Tom's face darkened. But before he could get angry, Luffy shouted, "Hey, Tom! Look over here! Come play with us!"
Tom turned his head and saw Luffy, Chopper, and Usopp all with chopsticks stuck up their nostrils, singing some unknown song like a bunch of fools, playing wildly. Their hilarious antics made the surrounding sand bandits roar with laughter.
In an instant, the previously silent desert became extremely lively, filled with laughter everywhere.
"No way. I'd rather stick my head in the sand than dance that ugly dance with you."
Tom directly refused Luffy's invitation. He would rather die than stick chopsticks up his nose and dance a yangko dance like them.
"Tom, you're so stingy!"
"Tom is the worst!"
"Tom is an idiot!"
Usopp, Chopper, and Luffy all made faces at Tom, gave him a mocking gesture, and each gave him a new nickname.
"You guys are asking for a beating!"
Tom couldn't take it anymore. He immediately charged over and started fighting with Luffy and the others. Under the blazing bonfire, the shadows of four people brawling were cast.
After Tom and the others finished beating each other up, all four were black and blue.
"Does the tattoo on your arm have any special meaning?"
Tom sat with Ace. Among the men present, Ace ate the most politely. Compared to Usopp, who was fighting Luffy for food, Ace was quite refined.
On Ace's right arm was a tattoo reading "ASCE," but the S was crossed out.
"It's very important to me. It's my treasure."
Ace said to Tom.
After chatting with Ace for a while, Tom saw Luffy charging over. Figuring the two brothers probably had things to talk about, he walked over to Zoro, who was sitting alone drinking something. "What are you drinking?"
"Alcohol."
Zoro answered simply. He had gotten this alcohol from Barubaru. He had wanted to drink with Barubaru, but the sand bandits only had this tiny bit left, so Zoro could only drink alone.
Tom grabbed a plate of food. Just as he was about to chat with Zoro, Vivi and Rasa walked over.
"Didn't you say you had something to show us?"
Rasa asked directly. Her complexion was much rosier than earlier.
Seeing Rasa and Vivi looking eager, and even Nami coming over, Tom pulled out a tiny, shriveled object no bigger than a pinhole from his belt and dropped it into Zoro's cup. "Watch closely."
Zoro saw Tom toss something into his drink. Just as he was about to speak, a small, pale yellow flower bloomed from the cup he was holding.
What Tom had dropped into Zoro's cup was actually a dandelion seed. This type of dandelion grew only in the desert. Their lives were not affected by the seasons. Normally, without rain, they would never bloom.
But once they encountered water, no matter what, they would seize this rare opportunity to rapidly open their flowers, displaying their most beautiful moment.
Nami and the others had just seen the dandelion seed Tom dropped into the cup sprout before their eyes at a visible speed and bloom into a pale yellow flower from within the sprout.
A dandelion seed that looked completely lifeless, that would likely never be found again if thrown into the sand—yet tossed into strong alcohol, it could still sprout and bloom. It was truly breathtaking.
Tom had picked up this dandelion seed by accident. Or rather, when he felt sand in his shoe and took it off to clean it, the seed had stuck to his hand along with countless grains of sand, and he had noticed it.
"See? A dandelion seed that never had a chance to see the light again, drifting in this desert for who knows how many years, yet in the end, it still bloomed."
Tom said to Vivi.
"Indeed. None of us knows what our fate will be until the very last moment."
Vivi's eyes lit up. She felt this was just like the current Alabasta Kingdom. Even though many citizens had lost hope in the country and no longer trusted the king, this was not the final outcome. Everything could still change.
"Thank you."
Rasa suddenly said to Tom.
Even a pinhole-sized dandelion seed, buried in the desert for years, seeing no sunlight, only endless darkness, could ultimately realize its value. So who could say that her years of waiting alone at Merias Oasis were meaningless?
Just as Tom was about to say something, Zoro said with a dark expression, "I don't care what kind of miracle you're discussing. My alcohol has turned into this—"
Chopper, who had just walked over, saw the flower in Zoro's cup and said, "Isn't this the desert dandelion? I've read about it in medical books. It has great medicinal value."
"Hear that? Your alcohol has been infused by it and turned into highly nutritious medicinal wine. So drink up."
As Tom spoke, he already tipped the cup and the flower together into Zoro's mouth, leaving the others stunned.
After Ace finished talking with Luffy, he went to play with Luffy.
"I used to think this desert belonged to someone," Barubaru said as he gulped down food from his plate to Luffy, who was eating with him. "But I don't think that way anymore. Looking back, that was just my selfish thinking."
"This desert doesn't belong to anyone. Precisely because it doesn't belong to anyone, we've been able to survive."
Barubaru glanced around. The yellow desert at night, having lost its daytime ferocity, appeared peaceful.
"It's just like the sea."
Luffy replied with a smile while eating, and then the two burst into loud laughter.
"Look at this! What is it?"
Sanji had been looking for Nami and Vivi when he noticed a small flower with four colors blooming not far away.
The flower was very small, with four petals, each a different color: red, yellow, blue, white. It looked quite lovely.
Sanji's voice quickly drew attention. When they got a clear look at the flower, someone exclaimed, "That's a Yimi flower!"
"Really, it is a Yimi flower."
"I never thought I'd see a Yimi flower here."
As more and more people shouted, Luffy and the others also came over.
"What's a Yimi flower?"
Tom asked Vivi.
"It's a rare desert flower. Many of us have only heard of it but never truly seen one."
Vivi looked affectionately at the small, four-colored flower blooming in the sand not far away. "It's very special. It takes at least five years to complete its root implantation into the soil. Only in the sixth year does it have a chance to bloom above ground."
"And its flowering period is very short, usually only two days. After two days, its life ends. If the environment is harsh, even if it successfully blooms, it may not survive more than a few minutes before withering and dying."
Vivi hadn't expected to see a Yimi flower here. But before she could admire it for long, the small Yimi flower began to wither before her eyes.
"It's dying. I wanted to pick it and give it to Nami-san and Vivi-san."
Sanji watched the Yimi flower start to wilt.
"It's just one flower. How are you going to give it to two people?"
Usopp looked at Sanji curiously.
A flower that took at least five years to take root, from successful blooming to death in at most two days—yet even so, it wanted to show its best side before withering. This Yimi flower was truly rare.
Having lived in this country for so long, they had only ever seen one Yimi flower, and it was dead.
Now that they had finally seen a living Yimi flower, it withered before their eyes in an instant, leaving everyone somewhat disheartened.
"It can still live."
Tom walked toward the slowly wilting Yimi flower. His pupils gradually turned blood-green. Since he was facing away from Luffy and the others, no one noticed his transformation.
When Tom crouched down and touched the withered Yimi flower with his hand now covered in green stripes, the stripes crawled onto the flower. Then the Yimi flower came back to life.
The four petals that had all withered were now vibrant four-colored petals again. The colors were even more vivid than before.
Just as Vivi was about to ask if Tom had done something, they saw more and more Yimi flowers emerging from the sand nearby. One by one, they bloomed.
In moments, what appeared before everyone was a small field of Yimi flowers. For those who had grown up in the desert, they had never seen such a sight.
For ordinary people, seeing a single living Yimi flower was already a blessing. But now, Yimi flowers were blooming everywhere, covering the ground.
The air, once filled with the scent of roasted meat, slowly carried a fresh, elegant fragrance, uplifting and pleasant.
"This fragrance is so nice. It makes me want to eat more meat."
As Luffy said this, he started shoveling more meat into his mouth.
"Is this a miracle?"
"I feel like I'm dreaming."
The Barubaru Sand Bandits watched the brilliant flowers blooming before them. The various colors of the four-petaled flowers dazzled their eyes. A cold wind blew, carrying the petals into the air, dancing in the wind.
And when the petals of these Yimi flowers were blown away, new petals quickly bloomed in their place.
In the dark desert night, countless fragrant petals danced around everyone in the wind. The soft moonlight spilled onto the earth. Everything seemed so dreamlike, so unreal.
"Is this the magnificent sight he said most people never see in their entire lives?"
Rasa watched the petals dancing before her eyes. Their dazzling colors mesmerized her. Living in the desert, most of what she saw was monotonous tan. But what she saw now was different.
What did he do?
Vivi had a feeling that everything before them was caused by Tom, but she didn't know how he had done it.
In truth, the sudden blooming of so many Yimi flowers was indeed caused by Tom. The green stripes on his body could accelerate life's growth and division, also affecting surrounding things—even seeds that had lost their vitality could sprout again. But there was a drawback: it greatly shortened the lifespan of the thing being affected.
This was like force-growing seedlings. However, since the Yimi flower's natural blooming cycle was already very short, the impact wasn't as severe.
Just as Tom was feeling tired and his blood-green pupils returned to normal, no one noticed that among the many Yimi flowers, an extremely inconspicuous flower had also bloomed—and on that flower, there was an eye!
Behind a dune in the distance, a woman wearing a cowboy hat, a tight denim dress, and a white fur coat over it stood. A trace of confusion hung on her face. She murmured softly, "Having a party here... what are these people thinking?"
"And... what did he do?"
The woman gently shook her head, glanced toward the bright firelight, a faint, graceful smile on her lips. Then she turned elegantly and quickly disappeared into the night. Her silhouette seemed to hide endless loneliness.
With the flowers adding to the festive atmosphere, Luffy and the others played even more wildly. Sanji, excited, was picking flowers left and right, looking for the most beautiful ones to give to Nami and Vivi.
"There are two more flowers here, quite different."
After Tom stopped using his Devil Fruit ability, he saw a blue-purple flower ahead. It had three layers of petals, with darker stripes on the petals. It was clearly different from the Yimi flowers.
"That's a Malans flower. It also grows in the desert."
Vivi walked over. Just as she was about to say something, Tom casually picked one and gave it to Nami beside him. Then he handed the other Malans flower to Vivi. As she took the flower, a blush rose on her fair face. She said softly, "In this country, this flower can't be given to just anyone."
"Why?"
Nami asked curiously as she fiddled with the blue-purple flower in her hand.
"Because this flower has another meaning. It represents... a lover from a past life."
The moment Vivi said this, before Nami could respond, Tom took the Malans flower from Vivi's hand. Under their astonished gazes, he quickly stuffed the petals into his mouth, chewing as he spoke. "This flower is pretty tasty. Not bad."
"Are you an idiot?"
Nami and Vivi stared at Tom blankly and asked in unison.
"Um. That solves it."
Tom handed the flower stem back to Vivi—now bare, with no petals—and walked away without looking back.
Vivi looked at the bare little stick in her hand, her jaw dropping. "Why didn't you eat this part too?! Why are you giving it back to me?!"
"You were really rude just now."
Nami quickly caught up to Tom. She hadn't thrown away her Malans flower.
"No, I just suddenly felt like eating something."
Tom was still making excuses.
"Did you do something earlier?"
Nami finally voiced the doubt in her heart. She had noticed earlier that soon after Tom crouched down to touch the Yimi flower, he started breathing heavily, looking very tired.
"It's nothing. But I really am tired now. If I accidentally fall into a hole, I probably won't be able to climb out."
"How could that—"
Before Nami could finish, as she walked in step with Tom, she took one more step and felt her foot sink into empty space. Then both of them fell down together.
"Nami-san! Vivi-san! I found the most suitable flowers for you!"
Sanji, holding two lovely little flowers, happily went to find Nami and Vivi. But he only saw Vivi. He searched around but couldn't find Nami anywhere.
Meanwhile, Tom and Nami had fallen into a hole. Tom had landed right on top of Nami.
"Why is there a hole here?"
Tom saw that the hole wasn't deep but was quite wide, more than enough for two people.
"I don't know. Get up."
Nami gently pushed Tom, signaling him to get off her.
The hole they were in was actually the one Usopp had asked Chopper to dig earlier. Who knew it would end up trapping Tom and Nami?
Just as Tom tried to get up, his arms went weak again. Clearly, the energy consumed by using his Devil Fruit ability earlier was far greater than he had imagined. So he tragically fell back onto Nami.
But Nami thought Tom had already gotten up, so she sat up as well. Just as she propped herself up with her hands, Tom fell on her again. And then their lips met.
The silver moonlight shone on the man and woman. As they closed their eyes, a blue-purple flower emerged from the sand beside them, as if watching something, gently swaying...
