Chapter 8 - CHAPTER SEVEN

Shadows of Betrayal

The days after the dinner at the Lockridge mansion were heavy with tension. Oriana could feel Vionna's presence everywhere in whispered comments, in calculated glances, in every interaction with Tavian's family. No matter how much Tavian tried to shield her, the cruel reality of the world she had stepped into was impossible to ignore.

Oriana worked hard at the beach and around her home, trying to focus on simple tasks, hoping to regain her sense of peace. But every time she thought of Tavian, she remembered the mansion, the whispers, and Vionna's malicious smile.

One afternoon, as she walked along the shore, she spotted Tavian waiting for her near the pier. His face was troubled, and his hands were clenched behind his back.

"Oriana" he began cautiously, "I need to talk to you about something. My family, they're concerned."

Oriana's stomach tightened. "Concerned? About what?"

Tavian hesitated. "They don't understand our connection. They don't trust you. They think maybe you're not right for me. That you don't belong in our world."

Oriana felt a cold wave of fear wash over her. "Not right for you?" she whispered. "Tavian, I love you. Is that not enough?"

He took her hands tightly. "It is enough for me. But my family will try to separate us. And Vionna she's not just cruel, she's relentless. She wants to see you hurt."

Oriana's eyes filled with tears. "So all this humiliation, the whispers, it's only going to get worse?"

Tavian swallowed hard. "I fear it will. And Oriana there's something even more troubling. My mother received letters."

"Letters?"

He nodded. "Anonymous notes. Saying you're taking advantage of me. That you plotted to trap me. That you're using your innocence to deceive us all."

Oriana shook her head in disbelief. "I would never!"

"I know," he said quickly. "I know you wouldn't. But the handwriting, the words they were designed to ignite doubt. And my parents fell for it."

Oriana's heart pounded painfully. "Who would do something like that?"

Tavian looked away, jaw tight. "Someone who knows exactly how to poison a family."

Oriana felt the truth settle like ice. "Vionna."

Tavian didn't deny it.

Later that week, Tavian brought Oriana back to the mansion, hoping to calm the hostility. But Vionna had already struck again. When Oriana entered the grand hall, she was met with cold stares and forced politeness.

"Oriana," Theresa said stiffly, "we only want Tavian to be with someone suitable."

Oriana tried to reply, but her voice trembled. "I… I love him. I mean no harm."

Vionna glided forward, her smile soft and poisonous. "Of course you mean well. But intentions aren't everything. After all" She paused, letting her words sink in. "Some people create chaos without even knowing it."

Tavian tensed beside Oriana, but before he could defend her, Leonard entered the room holding a small envelope.

"Theresa," he said sharply, "another one."

Oriana's breath caught in her throat.

Another letter.

Leonard opened it, his eyes narrowing. "It says Oriana was seen stealing jewelry from the servants' quarters."

Oriana gasped. "I… I didn't! I wasn't even"

"We know," Tavian snapped, whipping toward his father. "This is absurd!"

But Vionna's expression remained calm.

Then, as Theresa continued to scold Oriana, something unexpected happened. A maid stepped forward hesitantly. "Ma'am," she said, voice trembling, "I… I saw someone leaving these notes earlier. I didn't want to say anything but"

Everyone turned to her.

"It was ma'am Vionna."

Silence crashed over the room.

Vionna's smile finally cracked.

"Liar, you little!" She lunged toward the maid, but Leonard grabbed her arm.

"Vionna," he said in a low, dangerous voice, "what have you done?"

Vionna yanked her arm free and straightened, regaining her icy composure. "I did what needed to be done. I protected this family from her."

Oriana stumbled back, stunned. So it wasn't only whispers Vionna had been orchestrating everything. The rumors. The letters. The growing hatred. She had manufactured the entire storm.

Tavian stepped in front of Oriana, fury burning in his eyes. "This ends now, Vionna."

But Vionna only smirked, lifting her chin. "Oh, Tavian, you have no idea what I've started. That was only the beginning."

That night, Oriana walked along the moonlit beach, her chest aching. But beneath the heartbreak, something stronger stirred resolve.

"I will not give up," she whispered. "I will rise even if the shadows try to bury me."

Vionna had declared war.

But Oriana's spirit was ready to fight.

The tides had always carried her forward. Now, they would carry her through the storm Vionna had unleashed.
